WARNING: THIS UNIT IS INTENDED TO BE INSTALLED BY A PROFESSIONAL OR
QUALIFIED INSTALLATION CONTRACTOR IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE APPLICABLE
REQUIREMENTS OF THE NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE (NEC) AND THE AUTHORITIES
HAVING JURISDICTION.
To reduce the risk of death, personal injury or damage to property, and equipment, the frame must
be anchored to a concrete floor. Do not attach equipment or pathway to the frame prior to it being
anchored to the floor.
Removal from packaging, placement and installation of the Frame is recommended by
two persons.
Improper use of the product may lead to death, personal injury or property damage, serious injury
or death. Read and understand all instructions for proper installation and use of this product.
Ambient Temperature: A manufacturers maximum specified operating ambient of 122°F
(50°C); so that the installer is able to determine acceptability of use of accessories and
components in the operating state.
Spacings: Minimum spacings between the accessories/components and the housing for
Information Technology Communication Equipment shall be maintained for safe operation of the
equipment when installed in accordance with the National Electric Code, ANSI/NFPA 70-2005.
Clearance above and below the rack should be minimum 4 in.
The equipment shall be installed or serviced by trained service personnel in accordance with the
applicable requirements of the NEC, ANSI/NFPA70 or Canadian Electrical Code.
Maximum weight to be installed in unit should be total 66 lbs.
If provided, proper installation of an equipment grounding terminal must be made and the rack
must be grounded in accordance with NFPA 70, NEC, and the applicable sections of ANSI C2,
“National Electrical Safety Code."
The equipment shall be installed by trained service personnel. All parts such as screws, bolts,
wiring and similar parts that are required to complete the assembly shall be provided. Assembly
instructions shall be provided.
The enclosure shall be in a restricted access location and used only by trained
service personnel.

The Leviton HDF3168 Fiber Distribution System is an optical distribution frame that is designed
for the high-density applications in the Main Distribution Area of Data Centers. It can also be
deployed in any cross-connect architecture and still provide clear, managed pathways for fiber. It
is designed to reduce the installation time and provide easy patching access, while maximizing
usable space and minimizing the footprint. The open construction will allow easy cross patching
while maintaining minimum bend radius throughout the system.
It utilizes a 2 x 2 ft print and is fully modular and scalable. Any number of frames can be ganged
together to create a scalable system.
The following identifies the maximum recommended density per 2 x 2 ft utilizing the provided
connectivity solutions:

Distribution System
Leviton’s combination of mounting, termination and patching
hardware that enables modular, scalable, high density patching.
Frame Physical structure to which network equipment is attached. The term
Frame refers to the Leviton specific product.
Patch Deck A Deck is a Leviton specific product that mounts in a Frame. Each
Deck can house any combination of up to 12 Cassettes, Adapter
Plates or Blank Plates.
Patch Tray A Cassette Tray is a Leviton specific product that mounts in a Deck.
Each Tray can house up to 2 MTP

Large “mushroom shaped” cable management devices for bend
radius compliant cable routing and patching.
Cable Clamp A clamping bracket device that accepts various cable sizes and
quantities for simple mounting to the HDF3168 Frame.
Louver Quarter round fingered cable management devices for bend radius

The following tools are recommended for successful installation of the HDF3168 Frame and
components.

3.1 Leviton HDF3168 MDA Frame System Components
The Leviton HDF3168 MDA Frame system hardware can be divided into five major
classifications. These are:

The System Components are:
MDA High Density Frame: The frame is an 84 in. high x 24 in. wide x 20.4 in. deep equipment
frame designed to fit within a 24 in. x 24 in. space. The frame allows for the placement of any
combination of up to 22 Patch decks, Splice Decks, Cross Frame Routing Trays or Blank
Plates. The frame can either be mounted directly to the structural floor or on Raised
Access Floor.

Cable Management Door (Included with all Frames): The Cable Management Door is
the mounting face for all Cable Management Spools. It also provides access and discrete
screening for all off-frame routing trays.
Rear Trunk Mesh (Part of the Frame): The Rear Trunk Mesh is a grid based mounting
system for trunk cabling at the rear of the HDF3168 Frame. Each Deck has a specific mounting
mesh point to accept Cable Clamp Kits to properly secure fiber trunk cable from either above
or below routing. Routing Guides (Figure 1) provide proper support and guidance for bend
radius compliant installation. Side wall lances (Figure 2) are evenly located for securing of fiber
trunk cabling within the frame.
Cable Clamp Kit: Cable Clamp Kits (Figure 3) are adjustable mounting brackets that provide
protection and ease of mounting trunk cabling to the Frame. One complete Clamp Kit is
provided with each deck. One additional Cable clamp kit #F3168-CCK (mounting clamp and
grommet only) can be added to each mounting bracket.

3.2 Leviton HDF3168 MDA Frame Connectivity Components
The Leviton HDF3168 MDA Frame Connectivity components are designed for high density
patching and scalability capable of migration to 40/100Gb applications. The HDF3168 Frame
Components are:
Patch Deck #F3168-DCK: The Patch Deck is a housing capable of supporting 6 Patch
Deck trays. Decks are mounted using provided #12/24 screws in industry standard rack unit
threaded holes.
Patch Tray: The Patch Tray accepts either HDX MTP
®
cassettes or adapter plates. Both are
available in SC, LC or MTP
®
front side connector configurations in OM2, OM3/4 and
OS2 grades.
The Patch Deck mounts on the Frame as shown in Figure 4.

Cable Management Louvers: Cable Management Louvers provide bend radius compliant
patch cord support for each Tray. One louver is provided with each Patching or Splice Deck.
Rear Routing Guides: The guide consists of a Cable Management Louver and Cable
Management Clip to provide bend radius compliant patch cord support for each Deck and Tray.
One Rear Routing Guide is provided with each Patch or Splice Deck.
HDF3168 Splice Deck #F3168-SPD: The MDA Splice Deck is a housing capable of supporting
3 splice deck trays for a total of 144 strands of splicing per deck. Splice Decks are mounted
using provided #12/24 screws in industry standard rack unit threaded holes.

Up to 2 Injected Molded Splice Trays, Leviton #T5PLS-24F (Figure 6, sold separately) can be
located in each Splice Deck Tray with three trays per deck.
2RU Blank Plate #F3168-BLK: Deck Unit Blank Plate allows for the concealment of unused
openings within the frame.

3.3 Leviton HDF3168 MDA Frame Routing Tray Components
3.4 Leviton HDF3168 MDA Frame Enclosure Components
Cross-Frame Routing Kit #F3168-CFR: The Cross-Frame Routing Kit is an optional
cable management component allowing off-frame routing of patch cords and trunk cables.
Each CFR Kit fits within the Deck Unit or “RU” position of a Deck and is installable with
Decks currently installed in neighboring deck unit locations.
Front Door Kit #F3168-FDR: The optional Front Door Kit provides an aesthetic
concealment of current patch cords. The Door Kit mounts easily within the 2 foot

footprint,
is lockable and provides 180 degree accessibility of both doors. The kit includes a
grommeted top exit point to allow for off-frame routing of fiber optic patch cords.
Frame Routing Plug: Routing plugs provide a blanking capability for unused cross frame
routing openings.

A single Leviton HDF3168 MDA Frame may serve as the mounting location for up to 22 Decks.
Decks are available as either Patch Decks (six trays per deck) or Splice Decks (three trays per
deck). Cable Routing trays can replace decks at any mounting location within a frame
as needed.

HDF3168 MDA Frames require a 2 x 2 ft. area. If installing on a Raised Access Floor the tiles
in front of and behind the Frame should be accessible in order to route trunk cabling. Cable
pathways should be mounted above and/or below the HDF3168 MDA Frame as would be typical
of other Equipment Racks and Cabinets. Recommended spacing from walls or other rows of
equipment racking is as follows:
From walls – minimum 1inch side, minimum 3 feet front or rear.
From adjacent rows - minimum 3 feet, 4 feet recommended in Cold Aisles per TIA 942.
NOTE: For best results, Leviton recommends the use of:
2.0 mm or smaller diameter patch cords with round cord or 1.6mm zipcord construction. LC
patch cords are recommended to utilize duplex uniboot connectors.
Leviton Micro Data Center Plenum reduced diameter trunks. The use of Micro Data Center
trunk cabling is required for 24-strand MTP
®
configurations.

4 PLANNING THE SYSTEM INSTALLATION
The Following is an example of 3 HDF3168 MDA Frames mounted without Front Door kits in Plan
View (Figure 7).
4.1 Planning for Updating Existing MDA or HDA Installations
First, see the entire discussion (above) about planning for new installations, then see additional
suggestions below.
When planning to install Leviton HDF3168 MDA Frame as an upgrade, the planner needs
to evaluate the cables, connectors, polarity method and hardware in the existing installation
(patch panels and cable management). HDX High Density cassettes and adapter plates can be
interchanged or replaced to provide migration from 10G to 40G or 100G.
The following are maximum recommended capacities for each HDF Frame by connector type:
40G and 100G systems are only recommended to use 18 Deck Units due to high trunk counts
and associated cable management limitations.

method and breakout types. Mixing polarity methods will cause collision and connectivity issues

5 HARDWARE INSTALLATION
Installing the HDF3168 MDA Frame is achieved via securing the frame either directly to the
structural floor or through a raised access floor system.
NOTE: The Leviton HDF3168 MDA Frame Decks, Cross Frame Routing Trays, Front Door Kits
and Cable Clamp Kits are also provided with specific instruction sheets. Please refer to each
product’
s provided documentation for further information or access the on our website at www.
leviton.com/HDF3168.
5.1 Installing an HDF3168 MDA Frame
WARNING: To avoid injury or damage, it is highly recommended that two people perform the
unpackaging, relocation and placement of the HDF3168 MDA Frame. Allow only qualified
personnel to install this product.
Install a Leviton HDF3168 MDA Frame by following these steps:
5.1.1 Carefully remove the outer cardboard packaging from the frame.
NOTE: In the event of internal or un-noticed damage to product, save all packaging until
completion of the installation process in the event re-packaging is required.
5.1.2
Remove the frame from the packaging pallet by removing the 4 1/2 .in bolts securing the
frame to the pallet.
5.1.3 Relocate frame to the desired mounting location.
5.1.4 For installation on a Raised Access Floor:
5.1.4.1 Verify the area below the RAF is suitable for cable routing and mounting of
the frame to building structure.
5.1.4.2 Perform the tile cut as shown in Figure 8.

5.1.4.3 Install desired tile edging, grommet material or other trim/air
damming device.
If using adjustable tile edging with edge overlap of 0.75 in. or less, place
the frame over the exposed tile cut and mount the frame first. Edging can
be placed in the opening after the frame is mounted.
NOTE: In a Raised Access Floor environment, the HDF3168 MDA Frame is
designed to be placed directly over one 2 ft x 2 ft floor tile. If this is not achievable
due to spatial or existing conditions, ensure that a minimum of one removable tile is
available for under floor access within reach of the Frame.
If using adjustable tile edging, grommet or air blocking devices with edge
overlap of greater than 0.75 in., install all devices in the tile opening prior
to mounting the frame. Apply spacers, such as 5/8 in. flat washers at each
threaded rod location as needed to elevate the frame above the tile cut
and selected device.

5.1.4.4 Position the frame as desired and mark the 4 mounting hole positions on the
floor tile.
5.1.4.5 Drill 5/8 in. holes through the Floor tile to allow for ½ in. all-thread
pass through.
5.1.4.6 Using a Plumb Bob or level mark the anchor positions in the
building structure.
5.1.4.7 Drill a hole appropriate for the concrete anchor to be used. Consult the
manufacturers documentation for product specific information.
5.1.4.8 Install the concrete anchors.
5.1.4.9 Position the frame over the holes in the raised access floor tile accounting for
edging or grommet devices as discussed previously.
5.1.4.10 Install the threaded rod trough the frame mounting holes, and if required the
seismic mounting kit (optional) and into the concrete anchors.
5.1.4.11 Secure and tighten all hardware to the manufacturers
recommended values.

5.1.5 For installations on concrete slab:
5.1.5.1 Position the frame as desired and mark the 4 mounting hole positions on
the floor.
5.1.5.2 Drill a hole appropriate for the concrete anchor to be used. Consult the
manufacturers documentation for product specific information.
5.1.5.3 Install the concrete anchors.
5.1.5.4 Position the frame above the anchors and install mounting hardware.
5.1.5.5 Secure and tighten all hardware to the manufacturers recommended values.
