EXPLANATION OF GRAPHICAL SYMBOLS
The lightning flash with arrowhead symbol, within an equilateral triangle, is
intended to alert the user to the presence of uninsulated “dangerous
voltage” within the product’s enclosure that may be of sufficient magnitude
to constitute a risk of electric shock to humans.
The exclamation point, within an equilateral triangle, is intended to alert the
user to the presence of important operating and maintenance (servicing)
instructions in the literature accompanying the appliance.
accompagnant l'appareil.
DATE OF MANUFACTURE
The date of manufacture of this Anchor Audio product can be determined by
the seven or eight digit serial number code. The fifth and sixth digits from the
right denote the year, the seventh digit (letter) from the right denotes the
month (A=Jan, B=Feb, etc.) Example: "XD960083" states that the unit was
manufactured in April of 1996. An "X" may or may not exist as the eighth
digit (letter) and has no significance in the serial number or date code.

The Ensign tabletop lectern is a portable, self-contained
lectern with its own built-in sound system. The operating
instructions below cover the basic functions of the Ensign
Here’s how easy it is to use:
1. Place the Ensign on a table or similar surface.
2. Raise the top, swing the support columns inward,
then snap the top down into place.
3. Remove the microphone from the column storage
compartment and plug it into the XLR mic input jack
on the tabletop.
For AC operation, plug the AC power cord into the
back panel and into a grounded 115 volt outlet
(220 volt outlet for export models).
For battery operation (TL-2B), make sure the battery
is charged (see page 8.)
4. Set all input volume controls to minimum, then turn
the Ensign ON. Increase the lectern mic volume
control (blue knob) while speaking into the
microphone until desired volume is reached.
5. Adjust tone controls for desired sound quality.
For more detailed instructions, see the “Operation” section
beginning on page 6.

About the battery protect circuit
The automatic battery protection circuit turns the unit off
when the batteries approach their ‘critical discharge point’ to
prevent damaging the batteries.
When the Battery LED begins flashing, this indicates the
batteries are low and the unit will shut off in 15-30 minutes.
Expected service time from the batteries
The service time per charge will vary depending on the
volume level, type of program usage and whether a
companion speaker is used with the system.
Service time per charge (continuous music input).
medium volume 8 to 12 hours
full volume (before clipping) 3 to 6 hours
Charging the batteries
Plug the power cord into an AC outlet (the Charger LED will
light, indicating the batteries are being charged). The charger
will automatically charge the batteries for optimum recovery.
When the batteries are charged (about 8 hours), the Charger
LED will flash. This indicates the charger has switched to the
maintenance charge rate—the charger may be left plugged in
to maintain a full charge without damaging the batteries.
IMPOR
TANT: For longer battery life, always store the unit
with the battery in a fully charged condition or with the
charger plugged in.

What causes feedback?
Feedback is a ringing, howling, or shrill sound that is self-
generated by the sound system. It is the result of sound from
the speakers being picked up by the microphone(s) in use
and then re-amplified by the system. This can form a self-
sustaining loop that can damage the sound system if allowed
to continue.
How to prevent feedback
ALWAYS STAND BEHIND THE SPEAKER
WHEN USING A MICROPHONE.
CAUTION: Feedback can damage your equipment and may be
hazardous to your hearing. To avoid feedback, always make
sure volume controls are at minimum before turning unit on.
If feedback occurs, immediately reduce the volume.
Try using auxiliary speakers.
For large audiences, the addition of an auxiliary speaker
driven by the Ensign will provide broader and more even
sound coverage. (See page 8 for more information about
using the Ensigns external speaker outputs.)

Battery Operation (Model TL-2B)
The AC power
cord may be
plugged in for
continued use
while also
recharging
batteries.
100-11-0/E, ENS 2/6/01 9:34 AM Page 9
Auxiliary Microphone Input
The auxiliary mic input is an XLR jack on the lower panel.
The corresponding volume control (Aux Mic) is on the upper
panel. The input is balanced, low-impedance, and has
phantom power for use with condenser-type microphones.
(Use only low impedance microphones with the Ensign, and
preferably balanced to avoid picking up hum or other noise when
using long mic cables.)
Auxiliary Input
The line-level auxiliary input (1/4"-phone jack) is located on
the lower panel, with a corresponding volume control on
the upper panel. Use it for playback of a CD or tape player,
musical instrument, VCR or similar audio source. The aux
input can be used simultaneously with the mic inputs for a
composite program output.
Line Output
The line-level output (1/4"-phone jack) provides a replica
signal of the composite input signal. Use if for direct
recording, or to daisy-chain additional powered sound
systems to the Ensign for greater crowd coverage.
Note: All line-level connections must be made with shielded cable
to avoid hum, buzzing, or radio interference.
Speaker Outputs
UNSWITCHED: Used to power an auxiliary speaker in
addition toEnsigns internal speakers for greater crowd
coverage. When using the unswitched output, use a speaker
such as Anchor’s P-3001 companion speaker.
Note: Using an auxiliary speaker with the battery-powered TL-2B
will shorten the battery service time.
SWITCHED: Used to power an auxiliary speaker in lieu of
Ensigns internal speakers. When a plug is inserted into the
switched speaker out jack, the Ensigns internal speakers are
disconnected and the amplifier power is routed to the
auxiliary speaker only.
Operation
7
Operating the sound system
1. Place the Ensign on a table or Anchor’s optional
“QuikStand” base. Raise the top, swing the support
columns inward, then snap the top down into place.
2. Remove the gooseneck microphone from the column
storage compartment and plug it into the lectern mic
input XLR jack on the tabletop.
For AC operation, plug the AC power cord into the
back panel and into a grounded 115 volt outlet
(220 volt outlet for export models).
For battery operation (TL-2B), make sure the
battery is charged (see page 8.)
3. Set all input volume controls to minimum, then turn
the Ensign ON. Increase the lectern mic volume
control (blue knob) while speaking into the
microphone until desired volume is reached.
4. Adjust tone controls for desired sound quality.
