Grounding Requirements

Use of Extension Cords

Because of potential safety hazards under certain

conditions, we strongly recommend against the use

of an extension cord_ However, if you still elect to use

an extension cord, it is absolutely necessary that it be a

UL-listed, 3-wire grounding type appliance extension

cord having a grounding type plug and outlet and that

the electrical rating of the cord be 15 amperes

(minimum) and 120 volts_

Use of an extension cord will increase the clearance

Leveling Rollers

Tile rollers have two purposes:

I. The rollers need to be adjusted so the refiigerator is

firmly positioned on the floor and does not rock

back and forth.

2. The rollers allow you to move the tefi'igerator away

from the wail for cleaning.

To adjust the rollers:

° Remove the base grille

imbedded in the threads of the pin, prevents the pin

from turning unless a wrench is used.) After' one or

door and check the alignment at the top of the doors.

For BuHt4n models

Some models are equipped with trim kits that allow you

to install door panels° You can older pre-cut black or

white decorator panels from your Sears Service Center, or

you can add wood panels to match your ldtchen cabinets.

Paneas Less Than 1/4" (6 mm) Thick

When installing wood panels less than t/4" (6 ram)

thick, you need to create a filler panel, such as 118"

cardboard, that wil! fit between the face of the door'

and the wood panel. If you are installing the pre-cut

decorator panels, pre-cut filler-panels are included in

the ldto The combined thickness of the decorator or

wood panel and the filler panel shotdd be I/4" (6 mm)_

Care of Pre-Cut Panels

Clean these panels using an anti-static cleaner' or a

mild detergent and water. (Look for anti-static cleaner

in electronic or computer departments.) Rinse

thoroughly and blot dry with a clean, damp cloth or'

chamois. Do not use paper towels to wash or di7 the

panels. Do not use cleaners that contain solvents, such

as ammonia, because they can damage the panels,.

Shallow sczatches and abrasions can be corrected with

a good grade of hard automobile paste wax. Do not

use a cleaner/wax combination. The wax will fil! in any

minor' surface scratches and wilt help to maintain the

luster' of the panels,. Apply the wax sparingly and buff

lightly with a clean, soft cloth using a circular motion..

(6 mm) thick bacldng, or a 3/4" (19 ram) routed

boar'd can be used. The raised portion of the panel

The areas at the top of the panels need to be cut out ofthe

panels. All other dotted lines indicate areas that must be

routed out about 3116" (5 mm) on the back side of panels

1/4" (6 ram) thick or mote, For panels less than i/4"

(6 ram) thick, these areas can be cut out of the fillet panels.

nnserting the Door Panels

I. Loosen the Top Trim on the freezer :had fresh

food doors.

o Using a T-20 Torx driver, loosen the two screws

attaching the Top Trim about 1/4" (6 ram).

2, Insert the panels.

,, Lift the Top Trim up I/4" (6 ram) and carefully push

the top fieezer panel in until it slides into the slot

behind the door handled Push the filler panel

(required with some door panels) in behind the

decorator panel. Repeat for flesh food panel. If your

model has a dispenser andlor a Convenience Center,

this step only applies to the top panels.

3. Insert the bottom panels {for models with a

dispenser and/or Convenience Center).

• Carefully push the panel in until it slides into the slot

behind the door handte_ Push the filler panel (required

with some door panels) in behind the decorator panel.

4. Tighten the two screws on the Top Trim to 30

in-lbs torque.

5. install the Side Trim. These pieces are tucked

inside the fresh food door handle°

Do not remove the protective film on the outside

of' the Side Trim until the Side Trim is installed.

" Fit the bottom of the Side Trim under the Bottom

Trim as illustrated.

* Hold the Side Trim against the front face of the

decorator panels and fit the Side Trim under the Top

Trim° Make sure the Side Trim is fitted correctly and !

that you are satisfied with the appearance of' all the

parts before pulling the blue tape liner.

6. Secure the Side Trim.

* Place one hand between the two pieces of blue tape

liner and hold the Side Trim firmly against the panels

and the side of the door.

* Pull the top blue tape liner up about 3" (8 ram),

pressing the trim with your hand as the adhesive is

exposed to the door'. Then pull the bottom blue tape

liner down about 3" (8 mm). Follow the tape with

your hand, pressing the trim adhesive against the door_

* Continue pulling the tape liner loose, alternating

between the top and bottom and pressing the Side

Trim against the door.

7. Remove the protective film from the outside of

the Side Trim.

Bnstaliing and Removing Previously

In order to remove the decorator panels and replace

with new panels you need to remove the handles_ A

T-20 Toix driver is needed

Removing the Handles:

!. Loosen and remove the 2 sczews in the "Fop Trim

2. Loosen and remove the 2 screws in the bracket that

attach the Handle to the top of the Door°

3. Grip the Handle firmly and slide upwards° The

keyhole slots on the Handle slide off the buttons

on the Door.

4. Open the Door and slide out the decorator panels.

Inserting the Door Panels:

Before installing the decorator panels, make sure they

have been routed out in the proper areas as shown in

the beginning of this section_ Slide in the panels to

perform a trial fit before fastening down the Handle

and Top Trim

Insealling the Handles:

Once the panels are fitted properly, install the Handle

and Top Trim

I. Slide the keyhole slots on the Handle down onto

the buttons mounted to the face of the Doo:. Slide

the Handle downwa:d until the bracket at the top

of the Handle fits flush on the top of the Door.

2. Replace the two screws in the bracket that attach

the Handle to the top of the Door and tighten

the screws to 45 in-lbs torque

3. Replace the Top Trim roaring sure it fits over the

Side Trim and that the locating tabs fit the inside

of' the Handle p:ofileo

4. Replace the Top Trim screws and tighten to 50

in-tbs torque.

Before You Begin:

o If the water supply to the refligerator is fiom a

Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration System and the

refrigerator is equipped with a built-in filtration

system, it is not necessary to use the refrigerator's

water filter:L Use the refiigerator's Filter Bypass Plug.

Using the refiigerator's water filtration cartridge in

conjunction with the RO filter can result in hollow

ice cubes and slower water flow from the water

dispense_:,

_,This water line installation is not wartanted by the

refiigerat0r or icemal_er manufacturer'. Follow these

instructions caxefially to minimize the risk of

expensive water damage.

o Water hammer (water' banging in the pipes) in house

plumbing can cause damage to refrigerator parts and

lead to water leal_age or flooding. Call a qualified

plumber to correct water hamrrler before installing

the water supply line to the refiigeratorr.

° To prevent burns and product damage, do not hook

up the water line to the hot water liner

" If you use your refrigerator before connecting the

water line, make sure the icemaker feeler arm is kept

in the STOP (up) position°

o DO NOr install the icema]ier tubing in areas where

temperatures fall below freezing_

• When using any electrical device (such as a power

drill) during installation, be sure the device is

insulated or wired in a manner to prevent the hazard

of electric shock°

° All installations must be in accordance with local

plumbing code requirements,

WhatYou WRJ Need

To determine how much copper tubing you need:

Measure the distance fi'om the water' valve on the back

of the refiigerator to the water supply pipe_ Then add

8 feet (244 cm)_ Be sure there is sufficient extra tubing

[about 8 feet (244 cm) coiled into 3 turns of about 10

inches (25 cm) diameter] to allow the refrigerator to

move out from the wall after installation.

A water supply ldt (containing copper tubing,

shutoff valve and fittings listed below) is available

at extra cost from your Sears store or Sears

Service Center,

Cold water supply. The water pressure must be

between 40 and 120 p.s,io

Power drill.

Copper tubing, 1/4" outer diameter to connect the

refrigerator to the water' supply, Be sure both ends of

the tubing are cut square

DO NOT use plastic tubing or plastic fittings

because the water supply line is under pressure at

all times. Certain types of plastic tubing may become

brittle with age and crack, resulting in water leakage.

° Two 114" outer diameter compression nuts and

2 ferrules (sleeves)_to connect the copper tubing

to the shutoff valve and the refrigerator water valve°

o If your existing water line has a flared fitting at the

end, you will need an adapter (available at plumbing

supply stores) to connect the water' line to the

refrigerator OR you can cut off the flared fitting with

a tube cutter and then use a compression fitting,

o Shutoff valve to connect to the cold water line, The

shutoff valve should have a water inlet with a

minimum inside diameter of 5/32" at the point of

connection to the COLD VVATER LINE. Saddle-type

shutoff valves are included in many water supply idts,

Befme purchasing, make sure a saddle-type valve

complies with your local plumbing codes.

Turn on the nearest faucet long enough to cleat' the

line of water,

b. Choose a location for the valve that is easily

accessible, it is best to connect into the side of a

vertical water piper When it is necessary to connect

into a horizontal water pipe, make the connection

to the top or side, rather than at the bottom, to

avoid drawing off any sediment from the water pipe.

c_ Drill a I/4" hole in the water pipe, using a sharp

bit° Remove any burrs resulting from drilling the

hole in the pipe.

Route the tubing through a hole drilled in the wall or

floor (behind the refrigerator or adjacent base cabinet)

as close to the wall as possible,

Be sure there is sufficient extra tubing [about

8 feet (244 cm) coiled into 3 turns of about

I0" (25 cm) diameter] to allow the

refrigerator to move out from the wall after

installation.

the Tubing.

a. Turn the main water supply on and flush ou_ the

tubing until the water is clear.

b, Shut the water off at the water' valve after about one

quart (1 L) of water has been flushed through the

tubing.

[_ Connect the Tubing to the

Refrigerator.

Before making the connection to the

refrigerator, be sure the refrigerator power

cord is not plugged into the wall outlet.

We recommend installing a water filter if your water

supply has sand oz' particles that could clog the screen

of the refrigerator's water valve, Install it in the water

line near the refiige, ator

a. Remove the plastic flexible cap f_om the water valve.

b_ Place the compression nut and ferrule (sleeve) onto

the end of the tubing as shown.

co Insert the end of the copper tubing into the water

valve connection as far as possible. While holding

the tubing, tighten the fitting.

d. Fasten the copper tubing into the clamp provided

to hold it in position. You may need to pry open

the clamp.

connection on your refiigerator_

Airange the coil of copper tubing so that it does not

vibrate against the back of the refrigerator or against

the wall.

Push the refrigelator back to the wall.

[-8-]Start the Ilcemaker

Set the icemalier feeler arm to the ON (down)

position. The icemaker will not begin to opezate until

it reaches its operating temperature of 15°E (-9°C) or

below. It will then begin operation automatically if the

icemaker feeler arm is in the ON (down) position.

Note: The icemal;er may double-cycle when it first

staIts, causing some water spillage from the icemaker

into the ice bucket, This is normal and should not

happen again.

Two controls let you regulate the temperature in the

fresh food and freezer compartments°

At first, set the freezerand fresh food controls at

INITLAL SETTING.

Allow 24 hour's for the temperature to stabilize,

whether you are setting the controls for the first time

or' adjusting them Iate_; Then, if you want colder or

warmer temperatures in either compartment, gradually

adjust the controls°

Note: Turning the freezer control to OFF turns

off cooling in both compartments--fresh food and

freezer--but does not shut off power to the refrigerator:

How to Test Temperatures

To test the fresh food

compartment place a bulb-type

thermometer into a jar of water'

Regrigera or Doors

The refrigerator' doors may feel different than the ones

you are used to. The special door opening/closing

feature makes sure the doors close al! the way and are

securely sealed.

When opening and closing the door' you will notice a

"stop" position_ If the door' is opened past this "stop"

point, the door will remain open to allow you to load

and unload food more easily. "When the door is only

partially open it will automatically close.

The resistance you feel at the "stop" position will be

reduced as the door is loaded with food_

To store unfrozen meats, fish and poultry:

o Always remove store wrappings.

o Rewrap in f0il, film or wax paper and refrigerate

immediatelT_.

To store cheese, wrap well with wax paper or

aluminum foil, or put in a plastic bag.

o Carefully wrap to expel air and help prevent moldo

° Store pie-packaged cheese in its own wrapping

ifyou wish.

To store vegetables, use the vegetable drawers--

they've been designed to preserve the natural moisture

and freshness of produce.

o Covering vegetables with a moist towel helps

maintain crispness.

° As a further aid to freshness, pre-packaged vegetables

can be stored in their odginaI wrapping.

Tips on Freezing Foods

o Freeze only top-quality foods. Freezing retains

quality and flavor; it cannot improve quality.

o Freeze fruits and vegetables quicldy after picldng.

The sooner you do, the better the frozen product will

be, with less culling and sorting to do.

o Use food wraps designed especially for freezing.

To store ice cream--Fine-quality ice cream, with high

cream content, will normally require slightly lower

temperatures than more "aii7" aheady-packaged brands

with low cream content.

o It will be necessary to experiment to determine the

freezer compartment location and temperature

control setting to keep your ice cream at the right

serving temperature.

° The rear of the freezer comparunent is slightly colder

than the front.

To freeze meat, fish and poultry, wrap well in

freezer-weight foil (or other' heavy-duty wrapping

material) forming it carefully to the shape of the

contents. This expels air. Fold and crimp ends of

the package to provide a good, lasting seal.

Don't refreeze meat that has completely thawed;

meat, whether raw or cooked, can be frozen

successfully only once.

ater Filter Cartridge

The water filter cartridge is located in the tipper right-hand corner of the fresh food compartment,

right below the temperature controls°

The filter' cartridge should be replaced every six months or earlier if the flow of water to the water

dispenser or' icemaker decreases,

UnstaIRng the HRter Cartridge

I. if you are replacing the cartridge, first remove the

old one by slowly turning it to the left Do not pull

down on the cartridge° A small amount of water

may drip down,

2. Remove and discard the plastic cap fiom the new

cartridge.

3. Fill the replacement camidge with water from the tap.

4. Apply the month and year sticker to the cartridge to

remind you to replace the filter in six months.

S. Place the top of the cartridge up inside the cartridge

holder. Do not push it up into the holder;

6. Slowly turn it to the right until the filter cartridge

stops. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. As you turn

the cartridge, it wil! automatically raise itself into

position.

7, Run water from the dispenser for' 1 minute (about a

half gallon) to clear the system and p_event

sputtering,

Note: A newly-installed water filter cartridge may

cause water to spurt from the dispenser:

FRter Bypass Pmug

You must use the filter bypass plug when a

replacement filter cartridge is not available. The

dispenser and the icemakel will not ope, ate without

the filter or filter bypass plug_

Convenience Center

The Convenience Center

consists of an automatic

icemaker, an ice & water

dispenser and a special

compartment with its

own door that becomes a

counter when you open it.

Frequently used items stored

on the fresh food door are

readily accessible through the Corivenience Center

Compartment door without having to open the main

refrigerator door. The upper fresh food compartment

light will come on when the Convenience Center

Compartment door is opened. (Note: Be sure to close

the door after use.)

The wink surface on the Convenience Center counter

is durable, stain- and scratch-resistant, but do

not use it as a cutting board° Sharp utensils can

damage it,

The special design of the

door' allows you to tilt and

lift up the door in order

to clean the bottom of

the frame.

Note: Use caution in

closing or using the

clean-out feature in the

presence of small children.

inside, lift the panel up.

Center bin, first remove the

panel using the hand holds.

Then remove the bin by

lifting it up and out.

A newly installed refrigerator may take up to

24 hours to begin making ice.

How the _cemaker Works

The icemaker will produce 8 cubes per cycle--

approximately 120 cubes in a 24-hour

period depending on freezer compartment

temperature, room temperature, number of door

openings and other use conditions°

If'you use your refiqgerator before the water

connection is made, make sure the icemaker fieeler arm

is in the STOP (up) position. When the water supply

has been connected to the icem_er, move the fi:eler

arm to ON (down) position..

The icemaker will fill with water when it cools to

freezing° Note: With a newly-installed refrigerator;

allow about 24 hours for the fieezer compartment to

get cold enough to make ice.

Throw away the first few batches of ice cubes (16 or

24 cubes). This wil! flush away any impurities in the

water line. Do the same thing after vacations or'

extended periods when ice isn't used,

To make sure the bin fills with ice, level the cubes

occasionally. _(fhen cubes fall into the bin tlaey may pile

up close to the icemaker and push the feele_ arm to the

STOP (up) position before the bin gets full Keeping the

cubes level allows the icemaker to fi!l the bin,,

The icemaker ejects cubes in groups of 8, and it is

normal for severa! cubes to be joined together:.

also turn off the valve in the water supply line to

Of Ice Is Not Used Often...

"Old" ice cubes will become cloudy and taste stale.

Empty ice storage bin periodically and wash it in

lukewarm water'. Be sure to al!ow storage bin to cool

before replacing it_otherwise ice cubes

may stick to other parts of the icemaker_

The spill shelf is not self-

draining To reduce water

spotting, the shelf and its grille

if no water is dispensed when the refiigerator is first

installed, there may be air' in the water line system.

Press the dispenser pad for at least two minutes to

remove trapped air from the water line and to fi!! the

water system, To flush out impurities in the -water line,

throw away the first six glassfulsof water,

A light switch (on some models) turns the night light

in the dispenser on or off, The light also comes on

when the dispenser pad is p_essed,. The light in the

dispense r should be replaced with a 7-watt maximum

bulb when it burns out..

CAUTWON: Never put fingers or any other

objects into the ice crusher discharge

opening.

important Facts AboutYour Dispenser

o Add ice before filling the glass with a beverage.

* Do not add ice from trays or bags to the storage bin.

It may not crush or dispense well.

* Avoid overfilling glass with ice and use of nai'row

or extra-tall glasses. Backed-up ice can jam the

chute or cause the door in the chute to fi'eeze shut°

If ice is blocldng the chute, poke it through with a

wooden spoon.

o Beverages and foods should not be quick-chilled in the

ice storage bin_ Cans, bottles or food packages in the

storage bin may cause the icemaker or auger' to jam.

o Some crushed ice may be dispensed even though

you selected CUBED ICE. This happens occasionally

when a few cubes accidentally get directed to the

crusher

After crushed ice is dispensed, some water may drip

from the chute.

o Sometimes a mound of'snow will form on the door

in the ice chute. This condition is normal and

usually occurs when you have dispensed crushed ice

repeatedly. The snow will eventually evaporate.

o Dispensed watei is not ice cold. For colder' water, add

,crushed ice or cubes before dispensing water..

why it's a good idea to filter the water

with a water filter'.

The water filter is an optional part at extra

cost and is available flora your Sears Service

Center: It may be installed in minutes when

attached to the inlet water tube connection.

Water Supply Accessory Kit

(optional at extra cost)

A water supply ldt containing copper tubing, shutoff

valve, fittings and instructions needed to connect the

icemaker to your' cold water line is also available from

your' Sears store or Sears Service Center.
