A HIGHLY

SOPHISTICATED MOVEMENT

Crafted entirely in the manufacture’s Grand

Complication workshops and featuring the pres-

tigious Patek Philippe Seal, the self-winding caliber

240 Q movement is composed of 275 parts yet

stands apart with its ultra-thin 3.88-mm proﬁle.

This is possible because of an off-center minirotor

in 22K gold and the ingenious arrangement of the

perpetual calendar and moon-phase mechanisms.

With its 48-month (four years) cam, the perpetual

calendar automatically displays the correct date,

taking into account months with 31 and 30 days,

as well as February 29 leap years. It does not have

to be corrected until 2100, a secular year when the

Gregorian calendar will omit the 29th of February.

All calendar indications can easily be corrected via

four push pieces recessed in the side of the case.

12 INSTRUCTIONS

winding crown

The winding crown is used to wind the watch

(position 1) and to set the time (position 2). If

your watch is equipped with a screw-down crown

(Nautilus model), unscrew the crown completely

before winding.

Your watch incorporates a self-winding move-

ment. The movements of your wrist set a centrifu-

gal mass in motion; this tensions the mainspring

which stores the energy. When you take off your

fully wound watch, it will continue to run at least

38 hours. When it has stopped after depleting the

power reserve, it can be rewound by hand (about

10 clockwise turns of the crown). Please wind the

watch before you put it on. This way, you can avoid

lateral pressure on the winding stem which in the

course of the years could damage the stem tube.

Your complicated self-winding wristwatch was

presented to you in a case with a winder. If you

do not intend to wear your watch for a longer

period of time, please return it to the case where

the constant motion of the winder will keep it

wound. By using the winder, you can eliminate

the need to reset the calendar when you put on

your watch again.

notes on correcting calendar displays

– Use only the correction stylus delivered with

your watch to press the push pieces. Any other

tool could damage the case.

– Do not perform any calendar corrections

between 3 p.m. and 2 a.m. During this period, the

mechanisms that change the displays are active

and could be damaged by manual interventions.

– All settings and corrections must be performed

in the speciﬁed order.

1. preparations

Start by manually winding the movement (max.

10 turns of the crown) to get it going before

proceeding with any other setting or correction.

Advance the hands with the crown until the

24-hour hand (in the subsidiary dial at 9 o’clock)

points at 6 o’clock.

2. setting/correcting the date

Repeatedly press the push piece between 11 and

12 o’clock or at 11 o’clock (Nautilus model) until

the correct date is displayed on the subsidiary

dial at 6 o’clock.

3. setting/correcting the leap year cycle

and the month

Repeatedly press the push piece between 12 and

1 o’clock or at 1 o’clock (Nautilus model) until

the subsidiary dial at 3 o’clock displays the cor-

rect year (4 represents the leap year) and the

correct month. Leap year cycles can be found in

the “Full moon and leap year calendar” brochure

delivered with your watch.

14 4. setting/correcting the day of the week

If the day-of-week display at 9 o’clock does not

correspond with the date, repeatedly press the

push piece at 9 o’clock until the correct day

appears on the subsidiary dial at 9 o’clock.

5. setting/correcting the moon phase

Each time you press the push piece at 6 o’clock

or at 5 o’clock (Nautilus model), the moon-

phase display will advance by one day.

Advance the lunar disk until the full moon

appears in the aperture. Consult the “Full moon

and leap year calendar” brochure, an almanac or

visit www.patek.com and count the number of

days that have elapsed since the last full moon

(relative to the current date).

To set the correct moon phase, press the push

piece as many times as days have elapsed since

the last full moon.

6. setting the time

Gently pull the crown out to position 2, and

move the hands to set the correct time. If you

move the hands forward beyond midnight, all

calendar displays will advance by one day. Press

the crown home again.

If your watch is equipped with a screw-down

crown (Nautilus model), unscrew the crown

completely before you set the time. Then pull

the crown out to position 2 and proceed with

the setting. Finally, push the crown all the way

in and screw it tight again.

Caution: Please set the time before you put the watch on.

This prevents lateral pressure on the winding stem. Please

use your ﬁngernails to pull the crown out and turn it gently

between two ﬁngertips.

Never pull out the crown in a humid environment or under-

water: the water resistance of your watch is assured only

when the crown is pushed home.

OF YOUR WATCH

certificate of origin

Your watch is delivered with a certiﬁcate of origin

that indicates the movement and case numbers.

The certiﬁcate is valid only if it is dated, signed by

an Authorized Patek Philippe Retailer, and com-

pleted with your name. It guarantees the authen-

ticity of your watch and validates your warranty

privileges for a period of two years after the date

of sale. The unique movement and case numbers of

each watch are transcribed into the workshop jour-

nals. With this information, you may have yourself

entered in the Patek Philippe Register of Owners

and will obtain the International Patek Philippe Magazine

free of charge.

As an all-encompassing hallmark of

quality, the Patek Philippe Seal applies

to the entire watch, including the

movement, case, dial, hands, pushers,

strap, and clasp as well as to all other

facets that contribute to the precision and aesthetic

perfection of the timepiece. It covers the techni-

cal, functional, and aesthetic factors, but also rate

accuracy, dependability, and customer service

quality. Additionally, it reﬂects the maker’s know-

how and all other assets needed for the develop-

ment, production, and long-term maintenance of

an extraordinary timekeeping instrument.

The movements and completely assembled watches

are subject to a series of technical tests and visual

inspections to verify their rate accuracy, power

reserve, reliability, water resistance, and overall

appearance. After it was assembled, your self-wind-

ing watch will already have run for several weeks

before leaving the workshops; it fully complies with

the stringent criteria of the Patek Philippe Seal.

rate accuracy

The rate accuracy of Patek Philippe watches is veri-

ﬁed in several phases of manufacturing, both with

uncased and fully cased movements. The ﬁnal test

is performed with a wrist motion simulator and

the results must conform to the following Patek

Philippe precision benchmarks:

The rate accuracy of calibers with a diameter of 20 mm or

larger must range within

–

3 and +2 seconds per 24 hours.

The precision of a watch is determined by how

accurately it keeps the time. A watch that is fast

or slow is considered precise if the amount by

which it is fast or slow remains constant. Such a

deviation can be easily corrected. The last test of

accuracy takes place on your wrist. Your tempera-

ment or the nature of your physical activities can

cause slight irregularities. Fluctuations in posi-

tion, temperature, or air pressure, the presence of

magnetic ﬁelds (as produced by most electronic

devices, metal detectors, household appliances,

etc.) as well as vibrations and other factors may

also affect its accuracy.

Should you notice that your watch exhibits such

irregularities, please do not hesitate to take it to an

Authorized Patek Philippe Retailer or an Authorized

Service Center where no effort will be spared to

assure that it is adjusted to meet your expectations.

water resistance

Your watch is ﬁtted with different types of seals

to protect the movement against the ingress of

dust and moisture and to prevent damage if it is

immersed in water. Nonetheless, we recommend

that you prevent direct contact with water if your

watch has a leather strap.

It is advisable to have a water-resistance test car-

ried out every year on your watch. This is a simple

procedure that takes only a few minutes at a prop-

erly equipped point of sale.

changing the caseback

If your watch was delivered with two interchangea-

ble case backs, please note that only an Authorized

Patek Philippe Retailer or an Authorized Service

Center is qualiﬁed to exchange the case backs.

service

We recommend that you have your watch ser-

viced every three to ﬁve years. For this purpose,

we suggest that you bring or send your watch to an

Authorized Patek Philippe Retailer or an Authorized

Service Center. This gives you the assurance that

your watch will be entrusted to the hands of a

qualiﬁed Patek Philippe watchmaker in Geneva or

at one of the Authorized Service Centers.

The watchmaker will completely disassemble the

movement and then clean and inspect all parts

and lubricate them in the reassembly process. All

functions of the watch will also be tested in detail

and the escapement regulated if necessary. Finally,

its rate accuracy will be monitored and precision-

adjusted for a further period of two weeks. The

entire process may take several weeks because

each watch must undergo a complete series of tests

to fulﬁll the strict quality criteria of Patek Philippe.
