asked questions pertaining to ALL portable models.
Some questions may not be applicable to the model covered in
this publication.
FUEL INFORMATION
Q: What is the proper fuel to use in my generator?
A: We recommend regular unleaded gasoline. Do not use E85
gasoline or mix oil with gasoline. Premium grade fuel can be
used, but is not required and will not improve performance or
output.
Q: What needs to be done to the fuel before extended storage?
A: Fuel that is not going to be used- even for short periods of
time should be treated with fuel stabilizer to slow the rate of
deterioration, gumming or varnish formation. Following the
manufacturer’s recommendations, treat the quantity of fuel
remaining in the fuel tank. Open the fuel valve, start and operate
the engine for 30 minutes. Close the fuel valve and operate until
the engine stops. This circulates treated fuel through lines and
carburetor. The fuel can be drained or left in the tank.
Q: Can I convert my portable generator to run on a different fuel
besides gasoline?
A: We do not offer any type of fuel conversion kit for our portable
generators. Aftermarket conversion kits are available on the
Internet. However, if a customer decides to convert the fuel using
an aftermarket kit, the warranty is void.
Q: Can I use any type of gasoline?
A: Gasoline with an octane rating of 87, with no more than 10%
ethanol is preferred. Never use an E85 fuel or a mixture of oil
and gasoline designated for two cycle engines. Utilizing a higher
grade fuel will not yield any increase in power output.
Q: The fuel capacity in my owner’s manual seems incorrect.
A: The fuel capacity listed is the total interior volume for the fuel
tank. Air space is required to allow for expansion of the gasoline
during warmer temperatures. So the actual amount of gasoline
that will fit in the tank is typically less than the stated fuel tank
capacity.
Q: How do I drain the fuel?
A: Actually, treating the fuel for storage is a better option. The treated
fuel can then be left in the tank. Fuel can be removed through
the fill opening using an automotive style siphon. Exercise all
appropriate cautions when handling fuel.
MAINTENANCE & OIL INFORMATION
Q: I am out of the recommended oil, but I need to operate my
generator. What are my options?
A: In an emergency, oil with an API rating of SH, SJ, SK, CF-4,
ILSAC, GF-1, GF-2 or GF-4 can be used. It can be mineral,
semi-synthetic or synthetic. Any of the following viscosities are
permissible: SAE 5W-30, 10W-30, 10W-40, 20W-50, 30 or 40
weight. Change the oil as soon as possible using Generac oil, per
the owner’s manual recommendations.
Q: If no dipstick is included on my model’s engine. How do I
know when I have put enough oil in my portable generator?
A: The customer should fill the oil to the bottom of the cap’s threads
on the crankcase. The oil should always be checked and filled
when your engine has cooled completely.
Q: Should I screw the oil cap/ dipstick all the way down when
checking the oil level?
A: When checking the oil, the oil fill cap/ dipstick should be screwed
in all the way. The oil level should be checked and filled when the
engine has cooled completely.
Q: The manual says the oil capacity is 1.7 quarts. When I add 1.7
quarts, it doesn’t reach the threads on the crankcase.
A: Add enough oil to reach the bottom of the threads on the
crankcase, even if it is more than the manual recommends.
OPERATION
Q: The hourmeter said it was time to service the air filter. After
the service has been performed, does anything need to be
done to the hourmeter?
A: The hourmeter will alert the owner continuously for one hour
before and until one hour after scheduled maintenance has
been reached. This includes oil changes (at 100 hours) or air
filter service (at 200 hours). As hours of operation continue
to accumulate, the hourmeter will automatically reset itself
until the next 100 or 200 hour service interval is reached. See
the Hourmeter section of your owner’s manual for additional
information. The hourmeter on some generator models have
a reset button that allows the operator to move between
maintenance intervals and reset intervals by holding the reset
button for nine seconds. NOTE: Not all generator models have
the reset button.
Q: How do I adjust the valve clearance?
A: Valve clearance adjustment is critical to proper engine operation
and requires special tools and training. Instructions are covered in
the Valve Clearance Adjustment section of your owner’s manual.
However, if you are uncomfortable performing this service
procedure, have your dealer maintain the generator’s valve
clearance at the intervals specified.

Q: What do the Red and Blue colored dots on the extension
cord receptacles mean?
A: These indicate the need to balance the loads on the generator
when adding electrical devices. For example, if you are adding
two electrical devices, plug one into a red outlet and the other
into a blue outlet rather than two red or two blue outlets. This will
help balance the loads on the generator.
NOTE:
This only applies to models with extension cords.
Q: Can I operate my generator in the rain?
A: Portable generators should never be operated inside an enclosed
space or contrary to any provision or warning contained in your
Owner’s Manual. However, portable generators are intended to
be used during extreme weather and for the sensitive electronics
on them, it is best if some sort of open covering can be used
to protect it from direct rain or snow. Great options would be
a car port or boat canopy with four open sides or a tarp hung
from a tree. It is very important to provide adequate ventilation
for the generator, so any sort of protection should be at least
five feet from any side (including the top of the unit) while in
use. Additionally, a portable generator should always be stored
inside when not in use to prevent unnecessary wear and tear. BE
ADVISED, the generator should NEVER be used in any enclosed
space including, without limitation, a shed, home, garage, trailer
or vehicle, even if the doors are left open, as this can be a serious
fire hazard and carbon monoxide risk.
Q: How long can I operate the generator? Does it need a
“break”?
A: Your generator can be operated continually. The highest priority is
to maintain a proper oil level. Each time you add fuel, check the oil
level as well. Add oil, if necessary, to keep the level at the upper
mark on the dipstick. See the Checking Oil Level and Adding
Fuel sections of your owner’s manual for complete instructions
on adding fuel and oil.
Q: Is there anything special I need to do before I turn off my
generator? Should I unplug my electrical devices?
A: Yes, remove all loads before turning the generator off. First,
turn off all appliances, lights and items being powered by
the generator. Then, unplug the items from the generator’s
receptacles and allow the generator to cool. Once you’ve done
this, it is safe to turn the generator off. NEVER turn the generator
off while loads are applied. Refer to the Generator Loads section
of your owner’s manual for complete instructions on adding and
removing electrical devices.
Q: If the generator is being used, how do I connect or
disconnect electrical devices?
A: NEVER start or stop the generator’s engine with running
electrical devices plugged into the generator. When the generator
is turned off, you can only connect electrical devices that are
turned off. When the generator is turned on, you may connect
electrical devices that are turned on or off.
Q: Why do I need to ground my portable generator?
A: Proper grounding of the generator, when used to back-up
a buildings utility power, will prevent electrical shock in the
event of a ground fault condition in the generator or connected
electrical devices. Proper grounding also helps dissipate static
electricity which often builds up in ungrounded devices. The
National Electric Code requires that the frame and externally
conductive parts of this generator be properly connected to an
approved earth ground. Local electrical codes may also require
proper grounding of the unit. For that purpose, connecting a No.
10 AWG (American Wire Gauge) stranded copper wire to the
grounding lug and to an earth driven copper or brass grounding
rod (electrode) provides adequate protection against electrical
shock. However, local codes may vary widely. Consult with a local
electrician for grounding requirements in the area.
Q: How often should I start / operate my generator between
outages?
A: Generac recommends starting a generator once a month and
running the unit for about 30 minutes. Starting the unit monthly
will help make sure that the generator is ready to turn on in the
event of an outage.
BATTERY INFORMATION
Q: How often do I have to charge the generator’s battery?
A: If the starter will not turn the engine over, charge the battery using
the charger provided with your generator. The charger should be
connected for no longer than 48 hours.
Q: My generator’s battery will no longer accept a charge. What
is the procedure for replacing a battery?
A: Complete battery replacement procedures can be found in the
Battery Replacement section of your owner’s manual.
Q: How do I charge my portable generator’s battery?
A: Most portable generators do not charge their batteries when
running. Two Generac GP models, the 15,000 and 17,500 and
all electric start XP models charge their batteries while operating.
Generac electric start generators, except those two GP models
come with an external charger. The customer should charge the
battery at least once a month for 24-48 hours in preparation
for usage. If the battery is dead, most of the portables have a
recoil backup (pull start). In emergency situations, the customer
can charge the battery by plugging the charger cord into the
receptacle on the generator while it is running. This is not
recommended for typical operation.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Q: What are the decibel levels of portable generators?
A: Our portable generators feature a low-tone muffler straight from
the factory. We do not offer a kit or recommend making any
changes to the generator or exhaust system, as that can void the
warranty.
Q: Can I add electric start to my pull start generator?
A: Generac does not offer any kits or accessories to add electric
start to a pull start generator. Making any changes can void the
generator warranty.
Q: Does my warranty cover travel/ pickup for my generator?
A: No. The dealer will not come out to the customer or pick up the
portable generator from the customer unless the customer has
paid them to do so.
Q: What is “idle control” and what does it offer the owner?
A: Most of our portable generators do not have idle control. The
engine will run at full speed in order to accept any immediate
loads. Some of the new XP and XT models do offer idle control.
The iX inverter series models have “eco-mode” which allows the
engine to run at a lower speed.
INTRODUCTION
Thank you for purchasing this model by Generac Power Systems, Inc.
This model is a compact, high performance, air-cooled, engine driven
generator designed to supply electrical power to operate electrical
loads where no utility power is available or in place of utility due to a
power outage.
READ THIS MANUAL THOROUGHLY
If any portion of this manual is not understood, contact the nearest
Authorized Dealer for starting, operating and servicing procedures.
The operator is responsible for proper and safe use of the equipment.
We strongly recommend that the operator read this manual and
thoroughly understand all instructions before using the equipment.
We also strongly recommend instructing other users to properly start
and operate the unit. This prepares them if they need to operate the
equipment in an emergency.
The generator can operate safely, efficiently and reliably only if it
is properly located, operated and maintained. Before operating or
servicing the generator:
• Become familiar with and strictly adhere to all local, state and
national codes and regulations.
Study all safety warnings in this manual and on the product
carefully.
Become familiar with this manual and the unit before use.
The manufacturer cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that

procedure, work method or operating technique that the manufacturer

SAFETY RULES
Throughout this publication, and on tags and decals affixed to the
generator, DANGER, WARNING, CAUTION and NOTE blocks are
used to alert personnel to special instructions about a particular
operation that may be hazardous if performed incorrectly or carelessly.
Observe them carefully. Their definitions are as follows:

GENERAL HAZARDS
NEVER operate in an enclosed area, in a vehicle, or indoors EVEN
IF doors and windows are open.
For safety reasons, the manufacturer recommends that the
maintenance of this equipment is carried out by an Authorized
Dealer. Inspect the generator regularly, and contact the nearest
Authorized Dealer for parts needing repair or replacement.
Operate generator only on level surfaces and where it will not be
exposed to excessive moisture, dirt, dust or corrosive vapors.
Keep hands, feet, clothing, etc., away from drive belts, fans, and
other moving parts. Never remove any fan guard or shield while
the unit is operating.
Certain parts of the generator get extremely hot during operation.
Keep clear of the generator until it has cooled to avoid severe
burns.
Do NOT operate generator in the rain.
Do not alter the construction of the generator or change controls
which might create an unsafe operating condition.
Never start or stop the unit with electrical loads connected to
receptacles AND with connected devices turned ON. Start the
engine and let it stabilize before connecting electrical loads.
Disconnect all electrical loads before shutting down the generator.
Do not insert objects through unit’s cooling slots.
When working on this equipment, remain alert at all times. Never
work on the equipment when physically or mentally fatigued.
Never use the generator or any of its parts as a step. Stepping on
the unit can stress and break parts, and may result in dangerous
operating conditions from leaking exhaust gases, fuel leakage, oil
leakage, etc.
NOTE:
This generator is equipped with a spark arrestor muffler. The
spark arrestor must be maintained in effective working order by
the owner/ operator. In the State of California, a spark arrestor is
required by law (Section 4442 of the California Public Resources
Code). Other states may have similar laws. Federal laws apply
on federal lands.
EXHAUST & LOCATION HAZARDS
Never operate in an enclosed area or indoors! NEVER use in
the home, in a vehicle, or in partly enclosed areas such as
garages, EVEN IF doors and windows are open! ONLY use
outdoors and far from open windows, doors, vents, and in an
area that will not accumulate deadly exhaust.
The engine exhaust fumes contain carbon monoxide, which you
cannot see or smell. This poisonous gas, if breathed in sufficient
concentrations, can cause unconsciousness or even death.
Adequate, unobstructed flow of cooling and ventilating air is critical
to correct generator operation. Do not alter the installation or
permit even partial blockage of ventilation provisions, as this can
seriously affect safe operation of the generator. The generator
MUST be operated outdoors.
This exhaust system must be properly maintained. Do nothing that
might render the exhaust system unsafe or in noncompliance with
any local codes and/or standards.
Always use a battery operated carbon monoxide alarm
indoors,installed according to the manufacturer's instructions.
If you start to feel sick, dizzy, or weak after the generator has been
running, move to fresh air IMMEDIATELY. See a doctor, as you
could have carbon monoxide poisoning.

ELECTRICAL HAZARDS
The generator produces dangerously high voltage when in
operation. Avoid contact with bare wires, terminals, connections,
etc., while the unit is running, even on equipment connected to the
generator. Ensure all appropriate covers, guards and barriers are
in place before operating the generator.
Never handle any kind of electrical cord or device while standing in
water, while barefoot or while hands or feet are wet. DANGEROUS
ELECTRICAL SHOCK MAY RESULT.
The National Electric Code (NEC) requires the frame and external
electrically conductive parts of the generator be properly connected
to an approved earth ground. Local electrical codes may also
require proper grounding of the generator. Consult with a local
electrician for grounding requirements in the area.
Use a ground fault circuit interrupter in any damp or highly
conductive area (such as metal decking or steel work).
Do not use worn, bare, frayed or otherwise damaged electrical cord
sets with the generator.
Before performing any maintenance on the generator, disconnect
the engine starting battery (if equipped) to prevent accidental
start up. Disconnect the cable from the battery post indicated by a
NEGATIVE, NEG or (–) first. Reconnect that cable last.
• In case of accident caused by electric shock, immediately shut
down the source of electrical power. If this is not possible,
attempt to free the victim from the live conductor. AVOID DIRECT
CONTACT WITH THE VICTIM. Use a non-conducting implement,
such as a rope or board, to free the victim from the live conductor.
If the victim is unconscious, apply first aid and get immediate
medical help.
FIRE HAZARDS
Gasoline is highly FLAMMABLE and its vapors are EXPLOSIVE.
Do not permit smoking, open flames, sparks or heat in the
vicinity while handling gasoline.
Never add fuel while unit is running or hot. Allow engine to cool
completely before adding fuel.
Never fill fuel tank indoors. Comply with all laws regulating
storage and handling of gasoline.
Do not overfill the fuel tank. Always allow room for fuel
expansion. If tank is over-filled, fuel can overflow onto a hot
engine and cause FIRE or an EXPLOSION. Never store generator
with fuel in tank where gasoline vapors might reach an open flame,
spark or pilot light (as on a furnace, water heater or clothes dryer).
FIRE or EXPLOSION may result. Allow unit to cool entirely before
storage.
Wipe up any fuel or oil spills immediately. Ensure that no
combustible materials are left on or near the generator. Keep the
area surrounding the generator clean and free from debris and
keep a clearance of five (5) feet on all side to allow for proper
ventilation of the generator.
Do not insert objects through unit’s cooling slots.
• Do not operate the generator if connected electrical devices
overheat, if electrical output is lost, if engine or generator sparks or
if flames or smoke are observed while unit is running.
Keep a fire extinguisher near the generator at all times.

2.1 KNOW THE GENERATOR
Read the Owner’s Manual and Safety Rules before operating this
generator.
Compare the generator to Figures 1 through 4 to become familiarized
with the locations of various controls and adjustments. Save this
manual for future reference.
1. 120 Volt AC, 20 Amp, Duplex Receptacle – Supplies electrical
power for the operation of 120 Volt AC, 20 Amp, single-phase, 60
Hz electrical lighting, appliance, tool and motor loads.
2. Circuit Breaker (AC) – Each receptacle is provided with a
1-pole, 15 amp circuit breaker to protect the generator against
electrical overload.
3. On/OFF Switch – Controls the operation of the generator.
4. Grounding Lug – Ground the generator to an approved earth
ground here. See "Grounding the Generator" for details.
5. Air Filter – Filters intake air as it is drawn into the engine.
6. Choke Knob – Used when starting a cold engine.
7. Recoil Starter – Use to start engine manually.
8. Fuel TankTank holds 3.5 U.S. gallons of fuel.
9. Gas Cap – Fuel fill location.

2.2 CORD SETS AND CONNECTION PLUGS
2.2.1 120 VAC DUPLEX RECEPTACLE
This is a 120 Volt outlet protected against overload by a 15 Amp circuit
breaker (Figure 7). 15 Amps of current may be drawn from each socket,
however, total power drawn must be kept within data plate ratings. Use only
high quality, well insulated, 3-wire grounded cord sets rated for 125 Volts at
20 Amps (or greater).
2.3 HOW TO USE THE GENERATOR



2.3.1 GROUNDING THE GENERATOR
This generator has an equipment ground that connects the generator
frame components to the ground terminals on the AC output
receptacles (see NEC 250.34 (A) for explanation). This allows the
generator to be used as a portable without grounding the frame of the
generator as specified in NEC 250.34.
2.3.1.1 SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
There may be Federal or State Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA) regulations, local codes, or ordinances that
apply to the intended use of the generator.
Please consult a qualified electrician, electrical inspector, or the local

In some areas, generators are required to be registered with local
utility companies.
If the generator is used at a construction site, there may be additional
regulations which must be observed.

2.3.2 CONNECTING THE GENERATOR TO A BUILDING’S
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
When connecting directly to a building’s electrical system, it is
recommended that a manual transfer switch is used. Connections for
a portable generator to a building’s electrical system must be made
by a qualified electrician and in strict compliance with all national and
local electrical codes and laws.

2.3.3 CONNECTING ELECTRICAL LOADS
DO NOT connect 240 Volt loads to 120 Volt receptacles. DO NOT
connect 3-phase loads to the generator. DO NOT connect 50 Hz
loads to the generator.
Let engine stabilize and warm up for a few minutes after starting.
Plug in and turn on the desired 120 Volt AC, single phase, 60 Hz
electrical loads.
Add up the rated watts (or amps) of all loads to be connected at
one time. This total should not be greater than (a) the rated wattage/
amperage capacity of the generator or (b) circuit breaker rating of the
receptacle supplying the power. See "Don't Overload the Generator".
2.4 DON’T OVERLOAD THE GENERATOR
Overloading a generator in excess of its rated wattage capacity can
result in damage to the generator and to connected electrical devices.
Observe the following to prevent overloading the unit:
Add up the total wattage of all electrical devices to be connected
at one time. This total should NOT be greater than the generator's
wattage capacity.
The rated wattage of lights can be taken from light bulbs. The rated
wattage of tools, appliances and motors can usually be found on a
data label or decal affixed to the device.
If the appliance, tool or motor does not give wattage, multiply volts
times ampere rating to determine watts (volts x amps = watts).
Some electric motors, such as induction types, require about three
times more watts of power for starting than for running. This surge
of power lasts only a few seconds when starting such motors.
Make sure to allow for high starting wattage when selecting
electrical devices to connect to the generator:
1. Figure the watts needed to start the largest motor.
2. Add to that figure the running watts of all other connected loads.
The Wattage Reference Guide is provided to assist in determining how many
items the generator can operate at one time.

2.6 BEFORE STARTING THE GENERATOR
Prior to operating the generator, engine oil and gasoline will need to
be added, as follows:
2.6.1 ADDING ENGINE OIL
All oil should meet minimum American Petroleum Institute (API)
Service Class SJ, SL or better. Use no special additives. Select the
oil's viscosity grade according to the expected operating temperature
(also see chart).
Above 32 °F (0 °C), use SAE 30
Between 40 °F and -10 °F (4 and -32 °C), use 10W-30
Synthetic 5W-30 for all temperature ranges

Any attempt to crank or start the engine
before it has been properly serviced with the
recommended oil may result in an engine
failure.
1. Place generator on a level surface (not to exceed 15° in any
direction).
2. Clean area around oil fill and remove oil fill cap and dipstick.
3. Wipe dipstick clean.
4. Slowly fill engine with oil through the oil fill opening until it
reaches the high mark on the dipstick (Figure 9). Stop filling
occasionally to check oil level. Be careful not to over fill.
5. Install oil fill cap and finger tighten securely.
6. Check engine oil level before starting each time thereafter.

2.6.2 ADDING GASOLINE
Gasoline is highly FLAMMABLE and its vapors
are EXPLOSIVE. Never fill fuel tank indoors.
Never fill fuel tank when engine is running
or hot. Allow engine to cool entirely before
filling fuel tank. Avoid spilling gasoline on HOT
engine. DO NOT light a cigarette or smoke
when filling the fuel tank.

Do not overfill the fuel tank. Always leave room
for fuel expansion. If the fuel tank is overfilled,
fuel can overflow onto a HOT engine and cause
FIRE or EXPLOSION.
1. Use regular UNLEADED gasoline with the generator engine. Do
not use any gasoline with more than 10% added Ethanol, and
never use E85 gasoline. Do not mix oil with gasoline.
2. Clean area around fuel fill cap, remove cap.
3. Slowly add unleaded regular gasoline to fuel tank. Be careful
not to overfill (Figure 7).
4. Install fuel cap and wipe up any spilled gasoline.

IMPORTANT: It is important to prevent gum deposits from forming
in fuel system parts such as the carburetor, fuel hose or tank during
storage. Alcohol-blended fuels (called gasohol, ethanol or methanol)
can attract moisture, which leads to separation and formation of acids
during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of an engine
while in storage. To avoid engine problems, the fuel system should
be emptied before storage of 30 days or longer. See the "Storage"
section. Never use engine or carburetor cleaner products in the fuel
tank as permanent damage may occur.

2.7 TO START THE ENGINE

Never start or stop engine with electrical
devices plugged into the receptacles AND
devices turned on.
See the KNOW THE GENERATOR section for component location.
1. Unplug all electrical loads from the unit's receptacles before
starting the engine.
2. Make sure the unit is in a level position (not to exceed 15° in any
direction).
3. OPEN the Fuel Shut-off Valve (Figure 11).
4. Turn engine ON/OFF switch to ON position (Figure 11).
5. Move engine CHOKE lever to the FULL CHOKE position (Figure
11).
6. To start engine, firmly grasp the recoil handle and pull slowly until
increased resistance is felt. Pull rapidly up and away.
7. When engine starts, move choke lever to 1/2-CHOKE position
until engine runs smoothly and then fully into RUN position. If
engine falters, move choke back out to 1/2-CHOKE position until
engine runs smoothly and then to RUN position.
NOTICE:
If engine fires, but does not continue to run, move choke lever to
the START position and repeat starting instructions.
2.8 STOPPING THE ENGINE
1. Shut off all loads, then unplug the electrical loads from generator
panel receptacles. Never start or stop the engine with electrical
devices plugged in and turned on.
2. Let engine run at no-load for several minutes to stabilize the
internal temperatures of engine and generator.
3. Move ON/OFF switch to OFF position.
4. Close fuel valve.
2.9 LOW OIL LEVEL SHUTDOWN SYSTEM
The engine is equipped with a low oil level sensor that shuts down the
engine automatically when the oil level drops below a specified level. If
the engine shuts down by itself and the fuel tank has enough gasoline,
check engine oil level.
2.9.1 SENSING LOW OIL LEVEL
If the system senses a low oil level during operation, the engine shuts
down. The engine will not run until the oil has been refilled to the
proper level.

Follow the calendar intervals. More frequent service is required when
operating in adverse conditions noted below.

3.3 GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS
The warranty of the generator does not cover items that have been
subjected to operator abuse or negligence. To receive full value from
the warranty, the operator must maintain the generator as instructed
in this manual.
Some adjustments will need to be made periodically to properly
maintain the generator.
All adjustments in the Maintenance section of this manual should
be made at least once each season. Follow the requirements in the
"Maintenance Schedule".
NOTICE:
Once a year replace the spark plug and replace the air filter. A
new spark plug and clean air filter assure proper fuel-air mixture
and help the engine run better and last longer.
3.3.1 GENERATOR MAINTENANCE
Generator maintenance consists of keeping the unit clean and dry.
Operate and store the unit in a clean dry environment where it will not
be exposed to excessive dust, dirt, moisture or any corrosive vapors.
Cooling air slots in the generator must not become clogged with snow,
leaves, or any other foreign material.
Check the cleanliness of the generator frequently and clean when
dust, dirt, oil, moisture or other foreign substances are visible on its
exterior surface.

Never insert any object or tool through the air
cooling slots, even if the engine is not running.
NOTICE:
DO NOT use a garden hose to clean generator. Water can enter
the engine fuel system and cause problems. In addition, if water
enters the generator through cooling air slots, some water will
be retained in voids and crevices of the rotor and stator winding
insulation. Water and dirt buildup on the generator internal
windings will eventually decrease the insulation resistance of
these windings.
3.3.2 TO CLEAN THE GENERATOR
Use a damp cloth to wipe exterior surfaces clean.
A soft, bristle brush may be used to loosen caked on dirt, oil, etc.
A vacuum cleaner may be used to pick up loose dirt and debris.
Low pressure air (not to exceed 25 psi) may be used to blow away
dirt. Inspect cooling air slots and openings on the generator. These
openings must be kept clean and unobstructed.
3.3.3 ENGINE MAINTENANCE

When working on the generator, always
disconnect the spark plug wire from spark plug
and keep wire away from spark plug.
3.3.4 CHECKING OIL LEVEL
See the “Before Starting the Generator” section for information on
checking the oil level. The oil level should be checked before each
use, or at least every eight hours of operation. Keep the oil level
maintained (Figure 6).
3.3.5 CHANGING THE OIL
Change the oil after the first 20 hours of operation, then every 50
hours thereafter. If running this unit under dirty or dusty conditions, or
in extremely hot weather, change the oil more often.

Hot oil may cause burns. Allow engine to
cool before draining oil. Avoid prolonged
or repeated skin exposure with used oil.
Thoroughly wash exposed areas with soap.
Use the following instructions to change the oil after
the engine cools down:
1. See the KNOW THE GENERATOR section for component
location.
2. Clean area around oil drain plug.
3. Remove oil drain plug from engine and oil fill plug to drain oil
completely into a suitable container.
4. When oil has completely drained, install oil drain plug and tighten
securely.
5. Fill engine with recommended oil. (See “Before Starting the
Generator” for oil recommendations).
6. Wipe up any spilled oil.
7. Dispose of used oil at a proper collection center.
3.3.6 REPLACING THE SPARK PLUG
Use spark plug F6TC, NGK BP6IS or Champion RN11YC. Replace
the plug once each year. This will help the engine start easier and
run better.
1. Stop the engine and pull the spark plug wire off of the spark plug.
2. Clean the area around the spark plug and remove it from the
cylinder head.
3. Set the spark plug's gap to 0.76 mm (0.030 in.). Install the
correctly gapped spark plug into the cylinder head and torque to
15 ft/lbs. (Figure 8).

3.3.7 SPARK ARRESTOR
The engine exhaust muffler has a spark arrestor screen. Inspect and
clean the screen at least once each year (Figure 9). If unit is used
regularly, inspect and clean more often.
NOTICE:
If using the generator on any forest-covered, brush-covered
or grass-covered unimproved land, it must equipped with a
spark arrestor. The spark arrestor must be maintained in good
condition by the owner/operator.
Clean and inspect the spark arrestor as follows:
1. Remove clamp and spark arrestor from muffler.
2. Inspect screen and replace if torn, perforated or otherwise
damaged. DO NOT USE a defective screen. If screen is not
damaged, clean it with commercial solvent.
3. Replace the spark arrestor and clamp.

3.4 SERVICE AIR FILTER
The engine will not run properly and may be damaged if using a
dirty air filter. Clean the air filter every 25 hours (Figure 10). Clean or
replace more often if operating under dusty conditions.
1. Remove air filter cover.
2. Wash in soapy water. Squeeze filter dry in clean cloth (DO NOT
TWIST).
3. Clean air filter cover before re-installing it.

3.5 VALVE CLEARANCE
Intake — 0.10 ± 0.02 mm (cold), (0.004 ± 0.001 in)
Exhaust — 0.15 ± 0.02 mm (cold) (0.006 ± 0.001 in)
After the first 50 hours of operation, check the valve clearance in
the engine and adjust if necessary.
Important: If feeling uncomfortable about doing this procedure or
the proper tools are not available, please take the generator to the
nearest service center to have the valve clearance adjusted. This is a
very important step to ensure longest life for the engine.
3.6 GENERAL
The generator should be started at least once every 30 days and be
allowed to run at least 30 minutes. If this cannot be done and the unit
must be stored for more than 30 days, use the following information
as a guide to prepare it for storage.
NEVER store engine with fuel in tank indoors
or in enclosed, poorly ventilated areas where
fumes may reach an open flame, spark or pilot
light as on a furnace, water heater, clothes
dryer or other gas appliance.

3.7 LONG TERM STORAGE

system parts such as the carburetor, fuel hose or tank during storage.
Also, experience indicates that alcohol-blended fuels (called gasohol,
ethanol or methanol) can attract moisture, which leads to separation
and formation of acids during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuel
system of an engine while in storage.
To avoid engine problems, the fuel system should be emptied before
storage of 30 days or longer, as follows:
1. Add a quality gasoline stabilizer to the fuel per the manufacturer's
specifications, and run the unit for 10-15 minutes.
2. After engine cools down, remove all gasoline from the fuel tank.
Use a commercially available, non-conductive vacuum siphon.
Drain fuel into approved container outdoors,
away from open flame. Be sure engine is cool.
Do not smoke.
3. Start and run engine until engine stops from lack of fuel.
4. After engine cools down, drain oil from engine. Refill with
recommended grade.
5. Remove spark plug and pour about 1/2 oz (15 ml) of engine oil
into the cylinder. Cover spark plug hole with rag. Pull the recoil
starter a couple times to lubricate the piston rings and cylinder
bore. A fogging agent can also be used in the place of oil.

Avoid spray from spark plug hole when
cranking engine.
6. Install and tighten spark plug. Do not connect spark plug wire.
7. Clean the generator outer surfaces. Check that cooling air slots
and openings on generator are open and unobstructed.
8. Store the unit in a clean, dry place.
3.8 OTHER STORAGE TIPS
Do not store gasoline from one season to another.
Replace the gasoline can if it starts to rust. Rust and/or dirt in the
gasoline will cause problems with the carburetor and fuel system.
If possible, store the unit indoors and cover it to give protection
from dust and dirt. BE SURE TO EMPTY THE FUEL TANK.
If it is not practical to empty the fuel tank and the unit is to be stored
for some time, use a commercially available fuel stabilizer added to
the gasoline to increase the life of the gasoline.
Cover the unit with a suitable protective cover that does not retain
moisture.

NEVER cover the generator while engine and
exhaust area are warm.

INFORMACIÓN SOBRE COMBUSTIBLE
P: ¿Cuál es el combustible apropiado para usar en mi generador?
R: Recomendamos gasolina regular sin plomo. No use gasolina E85
ni mezcle aceite con gasolina. Se puede usar combustible grado
premium, aunque no se requiere y no mejorará el rendimiento o
la salida.
P: ¿Qué se debe hacer con el combustible antes de almacenar la
unidad durante un período prolongado?
R: El combustible que no se vaya a usar, aun por períodos breves, debe
ser tratado con estabilizador de combustible para reducir el grado
de deterioro y la formación de gomas o barnices. Siguiendo las
recomendaciones del fabricante, trate la cantidad de combustible que
resta en el tanque de combustible. Abra la válvula de combustible,
arranque el motor y hágalo funcionar durante 30 minutos. Cierre la
válvula de combustible y mantenga el motor funcionando hasta que
se pare. Esto hace circular el combustible tratado a través de las
tuberías y el carburador. El combustible se puede vaciar o dejar en
el tanque.
P: ¿Puedo convertir mi generador portátil para que funcione con
un combustible diferente, además de gasolina?
R: No ofrecemos ningún tipo de kit de conversión de combustible
para nuestros generadores portátiles. En Internet hay disponibles
kits de conversión del mercado secundario. Sin embargo, si el
cliente decide convertir el combustible usando un kit del mercado
secundario, se anula la garantía.
P: ¿Puedo usar cualquier tipo de gasolina?
R: Se prefiere la gasolina de 87 octanos con no más de 10% de etanol.
Nunca use combustible E85 o una mezcla de aceite y gasolina
designada para motores de dos ciclos. Utilizar un combustible
de grado superior no producirá ningún aumento en la potencia
de salida.
P: La capacidad de combustible de mi Manual del propietario
parece incorrecta.
R: La capacidad de combustible listada es el volumen interior total del
tanque de combustible. Se requiere espacio de aire para permitir
la expansión de la gasolina con temperaturas más altas. De
manera que la cantidad real de gasolina que cabrá en el tanque es
normalmente menor que la capacidad estipulada para el tanque de
combustible.
P: ¿Cómo vacío el combustible?
R: En realidad, tratar el combustible para almacenamiento es una
mejor opción. El combustible tratado se puede entonces dejar en el
tanque. El combustible se puede quitar a través de la abertura de
llenado usando un sifón tipo automotor. Siga todas las precauciones
apropiadas cuando maneje combustible.
INFORMACIÓN SOBRE MANTENIMIENTO Y ACEITE
P: Carezco del aceite recomendado, pero necesito hacer funcionar
mi generador. ¿Cuáles son mis opciones?
R: En una emergencia se puede usar un aceite con clasificación
API: SH, SJ, SK, CF-4, ILSAC, GF-1, GF-2 o GF-4. Puede ser mineral,
semisintético o sintético. Se puede usar cualquiera de las siguientes
viscosidades: peso SAE 5W-30, 10W-30, 10W-40, 20W-50, 30 o 40.
Cambie el aceite tan pronto como sea posible usando aceite de
Generac conforme a las recomendaciones del Manual del propietario.
P: Si no se incluye varilla de medición en el motor de mi modelo.
¿Cómo se cuándo he puesto aceite suficiente en mi generador
portátil?
R: El cliente debe llenar con aceite hasta la parte inferior de la rosca
de la tapa en el cárter. El aceite siempre se debe comprobar y llenar
cuando su motor se haya enfriado completamente.
P: ¿Debo enroscar la tapa/varilla de medición de aceite
completamente hacia abajo cuando compruebo el nivel de
aceite?
R: Al comprobar el aceite, la tapa/varilla de medición de aceite se debe
enroscar completamente hacia adentro. El nivel de aceite se debe
comprobar y llenar cuando el motor se ha enfriado completamente.
P: El manual dice que la capacidad de aceite es 1.7 qt. Cuando
añado 1.7 qt, no llega a la rosca en el cárter.
R: Añada aceite suficiente hasta alcanzar la parte inferior de la rosca
en el cárter, aun si es más que lo que recomienda el manual.
OPERACIÓN
P: El horómetro indicó que es el momento de prestar servicio al
filtro de aire. Después de que se haya efectuado el servicio, ¿se
debe hacer algo con el horómetro?
R: El horómetro alertará al propietario continuamente desde una hora
antes y hasta una hora después de que se haya alcanzado el
intervalo de mantenimiento programado. Esto incluye los cambios de
aceite (a las 100 horas) o el servicio del filtro de aire (a las 200 horas).
A medida que continúen acumulándose horas de funcionamiento, el
horómetro se reiniciará automáticamente hasta que se alcance
el siguiente intervalo de servicio de 100 o 200 horas. Vea la
sección Horómetro de su Manual del propietario para información
adicional. En algunos modelos de generador el horómetro tiene
un botón de restablecimiento que permite al operador desplazarse
entre intervalos de mantenimiento e intervalos de restablecimiento
manteniendo el botón de restablecimiento pulsado durante nueve
segundos. NOTA: No todos los modelos de generador cuentan con
la función de botón de restablecimiento.
P: ¿Cómo se ajusta la luz de válvulas?
R: El ajuste de la luz de válvulas resulta crítico para el funcionamiento
adecuado del motor y requiere herramientas y capacitación
especiales. Las instrucciones se indican en la sección Ajuste de
la luz de válvulas de su Manual del propietario. Sin embargo, si no
se siente cómodo efectuando este procedimiento de servicio, pida
al concesionario que efectúe el ajuste de la luz de válvulas en los

P: ¿Qué significan los puntos de color rojo y azul de los
tomacorrientes del cordón prolongador?
R: Estos indican la necesidad de equilibrar las cargas del generador
cuando se añaden dispositivos eléctricos. Por ejemplo, si está
añadiendo dos dispositivos eléctricos, enchufe uno en un
tomacorriente rojo y el otro en un tomacorriente azul en lugar de
usar dos tomacorrientes rojos o dos tomacorrientes azules. Esto
ayudará a equilibrar las cargas en el generador.
NOTA:
Esto solo corresponde a los modelos con cordones prolongadores.
P: ¿Puedo usar mi generador debajo de la lluvia?
R: Los generadores portátiles nunca se deben hacer funcionar dentro
de un espacio cerrado o contraviniendo cualquier previsión o
advertencia contenida en su Manual del propietario. Sin embargo,
los generadores portátiles están diseñados para ser usados
en condiciones climáticas extremas y, a fin de resguardar los
dispositivos electrónicos sensibles que contienen, resulta mejor
usar algún tipo de cobertura abierta para protegerlos de la lluvia
o la nieve directas. Algunas opciones adecuadas son un cobertizo
para automóvil o un toldo para embarcaciones con cuatro lados
abiertos o una lona suspendida de un árbol. Es muy importante
proporcionar ventilación adecuada para el generador, de manera
que cualquier tipo de protección debe estar por lo menos a cinco
pies (1.5 m) de cualquiera de los lados (incluida la parte superior de
la unidad) mientras se está utilizando. Además, un generador portátil
siempre se debe almacenar en interiores cuando no se está usando
a fin de evitar desgaste y roturas innecesarias. TOME NOTA: el
generador NUNCA se debe usar en un espacio confinado tal como,
sin limitaciones, un cobertizo, una casa, un garaje, un remolque o
vehículo, incluso si se dejan las puertas abiertas, dado que esto
puede ser un serio peligro de incendio y de monóxido de carbono.
P: ¿Durante cuánto tiempo puedo hacer funcionar el generador?
¿Requiere un "receso"?
R: El generador se puede hacer funcionar en forma continua. La prioridad
más alta es mantener un nivel de aceite apropiado. Cada vez que
añada combustible, compruebe también el nivel de aceite. Añada
aceite, si es necesario, para mantener el nivel en la marca superior de
la varilla de medición. Vea las secciones Comprobación del nivel de
aceite y Cómo añadir combustible de su Manual del propietario para
las instrucciones completas para añadir combustible y aceite.
P: ¿Hay algo especial que deba hacer antes de apagar mi
generador? ¿Debo desconectar mis dispositivos eléctricos?
R: Sí: quite todas las cargas antes de apagar el generador. Primero
apague todos los dispositivos, luces y elementos alimentados por el
generador. Luego, desenchufe los elementos de los tomacorrientes
del generador y deje enfriar al generador. Una vez que haya hecho
eso, es seguro apagar el generador. NUNCA apague el generador
mientras haya cargas aplicadas. Consulte la sección Cargas del
generador de su Manual del propietario para ver las instrucciones
completas para añadir y quitar dispositivos eléctricos.
P: Si se está usando el generador, ¿cómo se conectan o
desconectan los dispositivos eléctricos?
R: NUNCA arranque o pare el motor del generador con dispositivos
eléctricos funcionando enchufados en el generador. Cuando el
generador está apagado, solo puede conectar dispositivos eléctricos
que estén apagados. Cuando el generador está encendido, puede
conectar dispositivos eléctricos que estén encendidos o apagados.
P: ¿Porqué es necesario conectar a tierra mi generador portátil?
R: La conexión a tierra apropiada del generador cuando se usa para
respaldar alimentación del servicio público en edificios ayudará a
evitar un choque eléctrico en el caso de una condición de fallo por
conexión a tierra en el generador o en los dispositivos eléctricos
conectados. Una conexión a tierra apropiada también ayuda a
disipar la electricidad estática que frecuentemente se acumula en
los dispositivos sin conexión a tierra. El Código eléctrico nacional de
EE. UU. requiere que el bastidor y las piezas conductoras externas
de este generador estén correctamente conectadas a una conexión
a tierra aprobada. Los códigos de electricidad locales también
pueden requerir la conexión a tierra apropiada de la unidad. Con
ese fin, conectar un cable de cobre trenzado calibre 10 AWG en el
terminal de conexión a tierra y a una jabalina (electrodo) de cobre
o latón conectada a tierra provee una protección adecuada contra
choques eléctricos. Sin embargo, los códigos locales pueden variar
ampliamente. Consulte con un electricista local los requisitos de
conexión a tierra de su zona.
P: ¿Con qué frecuencia debo arrancar/hacer funcionar mi
generador entre interrupciones del servicio público?
R: Generac recomienda arrancar un generador una vez por mes y
hacer funcionar la unidad durante 30 minutos. Arrancar la unidad
mensualmente ayudará a asegurar que el generador está listo a
encenderse en el caso de una interrupción del servicio público.
INFORMACIÓN DE LA BATERÍA
P: ¿Con qué frecuencia debo cargar la batería del generador?
R: Si el arrancador no hace girar el motor, cargue la batería usando el
cargador proporcionado con el generador. El cargador debe estar
conectado durante 48 horas como máximo.
P: La batería de mi generador ya no acepta más una carga. ¿Cuál
es el procedimiento para sustituir una batería?
R: Los procedimientos de sustitución de la batería completos se
pueden encontrar en la sección Sustitución de la batería de su
Manual del propietario.
P: ¿Cómo cargo la batería de mi generador portátil?
R: La mayoría de los generadores portátiles no cargan sus baterías
mientras funcionan. Dos de los modelos GP de Generac, el 15,000
y el 17,500 y todos los modelos XP con arranque eléctrico cargan
sus baterías mientras funcionan. Los generadores de Generac con
arranque eléctrico, excepto esos dos modelos GP, vienen con un
cargador externo. El cliente debe cargar la batería por lo menos una
vez por mes durante 24 a 48 horas en preparación para el uso. Si la
batería está agotada, la mayoría de los portátiles tienen el respaldo
de un arrancador con cuerda (arranque con tirador). En situaciones
de emergencia, el cliente puede cargar la batería enchufando el
cordón del cargador en el tomacorriente del generador mientras está
funcionando. Esto no se recomienda como operación normal.
