into contact with food are food-safe.

Function
Desiccation is the process of preserving food by drying it in the air. This process
involves dehydrating the food, so the microorganisms responsible for the spoil-
age process are deprived of their basis of life. Due to the gentle drying process,
the vitamins and minerals contained are largely preserved.
The appliance draws in fresh air through the fan in the lid 1, heats it to approx.
60–70°C and blows it down through the middle of the containers 3 to the
base 4. Then it rises again up the sides and flows past the food through the
grid shelves of the containers 3.
The warm, dry air causes the moisture on the surface of the food to evaporate.
Water flows outwards from the inside of the food and then also evaporates on the
surface, etc. The moist air is discharged through the ventilation slits in the lid 1.
The desiccated food can be consumed in dried form, further processed in soaked
form or cooked directly.
Before first use
WARNING! RISK OF INJURY!
Risk of fire! To prevent fire or overheating of the appliance:
Ensure sufficient ventilation. Maintain a minimum distance of at least
30cm on all sides.
Do not place the appliance under or near flammable objects such as
curtains or wall appliances.
Do not cover the appliance and keep the ventilation slits on the upper
side free of any obstruction.
Risk of burns! Allow the appliance to cool down completely before cleaning
it.
1) Set up the appliance on a flat surface near a mains socket that is easily
accessible and then plug the plug into the mains socket.
2) Switch the appliance on with the On/Off switch 2 and run it for 30
minutes without any contents. Afterwards, switch off the appliance, unplug it
from the mains and clean all parts as described in the section "Cleaning".
NOTE
During first use, some odour may be generated due to production-related
residue. This is normal and dissipates after a short time. Ensure that sufficient
ventilation is provided, for example by opening a window.

Preparing food
Observe the following instructions to achieve the best possible quality and shelf
life for your desiccated food.
Only use fresh food of the best possible quality. Cut out bad parts, generously
if necessary.
As a rule, the riper the food, the more aromatic it is. However, the food
should not be overripe.
Ensure good hygiene during processing. Wash the food thoroughly and
make sure your hands and utensils are clean.
Wash the food thoroughly and dry it.
Cut the food into evenly sized, evenly shaped pieces as much as possible so
that they are dried evenly.
Seeds from stone fruit may be easier to remove if you first dry the fruits whole
for about half the drying time. Then remove the stones and continue the
drying process.
To prevent browning, sprinkle the cut surfaces of fruit that turns brown quickly
(e.g. apples) with a little lemon juice before the drying process.
Food can be blanched briefly before drying to shorten the drying time and
extend the shelf life.
When drying meat, choose pieces that are as lean as possible. Always
remove fat, tendons and bones from the meat and cut it into thin slices.
You can cure or marinate the meat, but dry it before desiccation.
Cut against the grain of the meat to make the dried meat easy to chew.
Remove skin and bones from fish and cut it into thin slices.
Fish and meat is easier to slice if you put the pieces in the freezer for about
20 minutes beforehand.
After preparation, place the food in the appliance and start the drying
process.
8 GBIE SDAG 250 A1
Drying times
The information provided in the table below is for guidance only. The actual
optimum drying time of the food depends on various factors including your
personal taste, e.g. the variety and ripeness of the food as well as the thickness of
the pieces. Therefore, check the condition of the food at intervals and adjust the
drying time if necessary.

Operation
WARNING! RISK OF INJURY!
Risk of fire! To prevent fire or overheating of the appliance and to ensure
an optimal drying process:
Ensure sufficient ventilation. Maintain a minimum distance of at least
30cm on all sides.
Do not place the appliance under or near flammable objects such as
curtains or wall appliances.
Do not cover the appliance and keep the ventilation slits on the upper
side free of any obstruction.
Risk of burns! The appliance and the food being dried get very hot during
operation. Always allow both to cool down before removing the dried food
or cleaning the appliance.
1) Place the base 4 on a flat surface and close to an easily accessible mains
socket.
2) Fill the containers 3 evenly with the prepared food. Make sure none of the
individual pieces overlap. The air should still be able to circulate sufficiently
through the grid shelves.
3) Place the containers 3 one after the other on the base 4.
The height of the 2nd–5th containers 3 is adjustable to accommodate
thicker pieces of food. Note the four graduated indentations 5 on the outer
edges of the containers 3. The four indentations 5 of the selected height
should slide into the latches 6 of the lower container 3 so that the contain-
ers 3 stand stably on each other.
4) Finally, put on the lid 1 and insert the mains plug into the mains socket.
5) Press the On/Off switch 2 to start the drying process.
6) You can interrupt the drying process at any time, e.g. to check the dried
food, by pressing the On/Off switch 2 again.
10 GBIE SDAG 250 A1
7) When the food has finished drying, press the On/Off switch 2 to switch
off the appliance and disconnect the mains plug from the mains socket.
8) Allow the appliance to cool down before removing the dried food and
cleaning the appliance.
Storing dried food
Allow the dried food to cool down sufficiently and then pack it promptly.
To prevent spoilage or delay it as long as possible, the dried food should
be kept dry, cool, protected from light and packed in an airtight container.
You can use screw-top jars, canning jars or sealable plastic jars or you can
vacuum seal the dehydrated food. The maximum storage temperature should
be room temperature, but ideally around 10–15°C (e.g. in a cool cellar or
storage room).
It is better to store several small portions rather than one large one.
To minimise the exposure to moisture and oxygen, open the packaging of the
dried food as seldom as possible.
The spoilage process is slowed down by the drying process, but not com-
pletely stopped. Poor storage conditions in particular can affect the shelf life
of the dried food. To be on the safe side, check the stored dried food for
possible mould or rotten spots before eating it.
The shelf life of the dried goods can vary greatly and can be several months
to years depending on the drying and storage conditions. The better the
conditions, the longer shelf life.
Cleaning
WARNING! RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK
Disconnect the plug from the mains power socket before cleaning the
appliance.
Never immerse the appliance in water or other liquids! Otherwise
there is a risk of an electric shock.
CAUTION – PROPERTY DAMAGE!
Do not use aggressive or abrasive cleaning agents to clean the appliance.
They could damage the surfaces irreparably.
Clean the lid 1 with a slightly damp cloth. For stubborn stains, apply a mild
detergent to the cloth and wipe afterwards with a cloth moistened only with
water.
GBIE 11
SDAG 250 A1
Clean the containers 3 and the base 4 in a mild soapy solution. Rinse the
parts afterwards with fresh water so that all detergent residues are removed.
NOTE
The containers 3 and the base 4 can also be cleaned in the
dishwasher. If possible, place the parts in the upper dishwasher
basket and do not jam them in.
Dry all parts well.
Storing the appliance
Store the cleaned appliance in a clean and dry location.
