128 Series Union Y-strainer
128 series
The 128 Series Y-strainer is available with NPT male, sweat, press, PEX crimp
and PEX expansion union connections. The dual union design makes installation
and maintenance fast, easy and efficient with a variety of tailpiece options.
Constructed of DZR low-lead brass, the 128 Series Y-strainer is ideally suited for
use in plumbing and hydronics systems.

CAUTION: All work must be performed by qualified personnel trained in the

CAUTION: Over-tightening and breakage can occur with the use of Teflon®
pipe joint compounds. Teflon® provides lubricity so that care must be
exercised not to over-tighten joints. Failure to follow these instructions could
result in property damage and / or personal injury.
CAUTION: System fluids under pressure or temperature can be hazardous.
Be sure the pressure has been reduced to zero and the system temperature
is below 100℉ (38℃). Failure to follow these instructions could result in
property damage and/or personal injury.
CAUTION: Clean the pipes of any debris, rust, incrustations, welding slag
and any other contaminants. For optimal operation, air in the system must
be removed.
CAUTION: If the Y-strainer is not installed, commissioned and maintained
properly, according to the instructions contained in this manual, it may not
operate correctly and may endanger the user.
CAUTION: Make sure that all the connecting pipework is water tight.

Installation:
Install the 128 Y-strainer so the flow direction arrows on the body match the system’s
flow direction. It is important to allow easy access to the strainer for future inspection and
maintenance. The 128 Y-strainer should be installed upstream of any fluid control device or
heat exchanger for protection from dirt and debris which can affect system performance
Isolation valves
The Caleffi 290030 full-port ball valve is perfect for isolating the 128 series Y-strainer for
servicing. The compact union Male x Female isolation valve installs in between the 128
strainer body and the tailpiece fitting assembly. An optional stem extension is also available
for the 290030 for those projects requiring pipe insulation.
Construction details
The 128 Series dual union y-strainer uses the same low-lead brass body as the 128 Series
FlowCal™ and FlowCal+™ balancing valves with factory-installed PT test ports included. A
high-quality 20 mesh strainer and cap with blowdown plug are included.

Maintenance:
Serviceability
The Y-pattern body of the 128 Series strainer allows the body to remain in the piping while the
screen is being serviced, which simplifies maintenance and saves time. The blowdown port
plug can be replaced by a field-supplied low lead blowdown ball valve or the entire cap can be
removed for full access to the screen.
Cleaning
As part of a routine maintenance program, use a differential pressure measurement tool to
check the pressure drop across the PT Test Ports. When the pressure drop across a Y-strainer
reaches approximately 5 or 6 psid, it is time to clean it out.
