Downloading Aastra CNX language packs
An Aastra CNX language pack consists of a gzipped tar file called
<language>.tar.gz”. A tar file format is a type of archive file format
(Tape ARchive). Gzip is an external compression utility that compresses a single
tar file.
Examples of Aastra CNX language pack files are:
en-uk.tar.gz (British English language pack)
fr-ca.tar.gz (French Canadian language pack)
sp-mx.tar.gz (Spanish Mexican language pack)
You can download Aastra CNX language packs from the Aastra Web site at:
http://www.aastratelecom.com/support/show_downloads.asp?p=238.
Unpacking a lanaguage pack file
After downloading a language pack file (<filename>.tar.gz) to your computer, you
can unpack it using an unzip utility such as “WinZip” for Windows, or by using a
decompress utility on UNIX and Linux.
Unpacking the .tar.gz file on Windows OS
On a Windows OS, you can use the unzip utility to decompress the .tar.gz file as
follows:
1. Double-click the gzipped <filename>.tar.gz file.
2. Extract the files into an appropriate directory on your PC.

Unpacking the .tar.gz file on UNIX/Linux OS
On UNIX/Linux OS, you can use the gtar utility to decompress the .tar.gz file as
follows:
gtar -zxvf filename.tar.gz
The .tar.gz contents
The unzipped file contains approximately 80 .pcm files containing voice prompts
and tones, and a text file called “language.txt”. The following illustration is an
example of an unzipped language pack file:

Customizing Announcements for Aastra CNX Language Packs
The language.txt file contains the Aastra CNX configuration setting for that
language file. For example:
4
British-English
The first line (4) is the language pack version number, which the CNX uses to
check that the language pack is up-to-date. In the above example, version 4
applies to CNX Release 1.3 and earlier releases.
The second line (British-English) is the name of the language pack that the CNX
web interface uses to show which packs are installed.
Audio Editing Applications
You can edit and/or play the .pcm files using an audio editing program. You can
also customize the announcements in these files for your application. Some
examples of audio editing programs are:
WavePad or Cool Edit (for use on Windows operating systems)
MIXViews (for use on UNIX operating systems)
Audacity
®
(for use on Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux, and other
operating systems)

Customizing an announcement file
Description
This section provides a procedure to open, edit, record, and save an audio
announcement file.
The key characteristics of each Aastra CNX announcement file (.pcm file) are:
µ-Law compression (mu-law compression)
Single channel (mono)
8000 Hz sample rate
The following section provides a procedure to open, edit, record, and save an
audio file using Audacity on the Windows operating system.
Requirements
Aastra Telecom recommends using a USB digital microphone in a quiet room
when performing the recording.
You must open and save the file at a sample rate of 8000 Hz in mono (single)
channel format.
When the recording is complete, you must save it in raw pulse code
modulation (PCM) format G.711 µ-Law.
You should have a list of the default greetings (in English) that the Aastra
CNX uses. You will need to read these greetings (in your desired language)
aloud as you are recording. See Appendix A, “Aastra CNX Conference
Announcements” for a list of the Aastra CNX announcements in various
languages.
Note: You must retain these same characteristics in order to use the
language pack on the Aastra CNX.

Rebuilding a language pack
Description
This section provides information for rebuilding the language pack after you have
customized the .pcm files.
Creating the .tar.gz file
Since the native operating environment of the Aastra CNX is Linux, it is
necessary to use appropriate tools to create the .tar.gz file. On Unix or Linux
operating systems, this can be done easily. However, on a Windows operating
system, the typical tools such as WinZip are not applicable to rebuilding this file.
The following section describes how to create the .tar.gz file on a Windows,
UNIX and Linux OS.
Creating a .tar.gz file on Windows OS
There are useful utilities that allow you to rebuild tar and gzipped files on
Windows OS, such as tar to create a tar file, and gzip to compress the tar file.
You can use the following utilities on Windows to rebuild the .tar.gz file:
tar (download from http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/tar.htm)
gzip (download from http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/gzip.htm)
Note: WinZip reads and unzips .tar.gz files, but it cannot create them.

Creating a .tar.gz file on UNIX/Linux OS
Versions of common GNU/Linux command line utilities, such as tar and gzip are
also readily available for UNIX/Linux OS. The gzip utility is built into the Linux
OS.
You can use the following utilities to rebuild the .tar.gz file:
tar (download from ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/tar/)
gzip (download from ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/gzip/)
To create the tar file, use the following command:
tar -cfv <filename>.tar *
To compress the .tar file, use the following command:
gzip -v <filename>.tar
Example
For example, you edit the .pcm files with the Yorkshire dialect of English, and
place the files and the modified language.txt file in a directory called d:\en-yorks.
You would then use the following commands to create the language pack:
D:\en-yorks> tar -cvf en-yorks.tar *
add_ports_title.pcm
already_extended.pcm
are_you_sure_1_3.pcm
...
wait_to_join.pcm
welcome.pcm
D:\en-yorks> gzip -v en-yorks.tar
en-yorks.tar: 22.5% -- replaced with en-yorks.tar.gz
The en-yorks.tar.gz file could then be loaded to your Aastra CNX using the upload
feature specified in the section, “Loading/Removing Language Packs/
Announcment Files” on page 13.
