Safe
practices
developed
from
experience
in
the
use
of
welding
and
cutting
are
described
in
this
manual.
Research,
development,
and
field
experience
have
evolved
reliable
equipment
and
safe
installation,
opera
tion,
and
servicing
practices.
Acidents
occur
when
equipment
is
improperly
used
or
maintained.
The
reason
for
the
safe
practices
may
not
always
be
given.
Some
are
based
on
common
sense,
others
may
require
technical
volumes
to
explain.
It
is
wiser
to
follow
the
rules.
Read
and
understand
these
safe
practices
before

tempting

install,
operate,
or
service
the
equipment.

Cylinders

produce
short
circuit
arcs

lead

serious

cycle
of
a
welding
power
source
is
the
percentage
of
a
ten
minute
period
that
a
welding
power
source
can
safe
ly
be
operated
at
a
given
output.
This
welding
power
source
is
rated
at
40
percent
duty
cycle.
This
means
that
the
welding
power
source
can
be
safely
operated
at
rated
load
for
four
minutes
out
of
every
ten.
During
the
remaining
six
minutes,
the
unit
should
idle
to
permit
proper
cooling.
If
the
welding
amperes
are
decreased,
the
duty
cycle
will
increase.
