PRECAUTIONS

Read the Operating Instructions carefully and completely before

operating the unit. Be sure to keep the Operating Instructions for

future reference. All warnings and cautions in the Operating

instructions and on the unit should be strictly followed, as well as

the safety suggestions below.

Installation

Water and moisture — Do not use this unit near water, such

as near a bathtub, sink, swimming pool, or the like,

Heat — Do not use this unit near sources of heat, including

heating vents, stoves, or other appliances that generate heat.

This unit should not be placed in temperatures less than 5-C

(41‘F) or greater than 35°C (95”F).

Mounting place

— Place the unit:

on a flat , even surface

- away from strong magnetic fields

- at least one meter away from any radios or receivers

Do not place heavy objects on the unit.

Ventilation —The unit should be situated with adeauate s~ace

Foreign objects and liquid — Be careful that foreign objects

or Iiauid do not enter the unit throuah the ventilation o~eninas.

Carts and stands —The unit should be moved ‘ “

with care when placed or mounted on a stand

or cart.

Sudden stops, excessive force, or an uneven

surface may cause the unit or cart to fall over. @

Condensation — Moisture mav form on the ~s

pickup lens when:

- This unit is moved from a cold spot to a warm spot

- A heating system has just been turned on

- The unit is used in a very humid room

- The unit is cooled by an air conditioner

When this unit has condensation inside, it may not function

normally. Should this occur, leave the unit for a few hours,

then try to operate again.

Electric Dower

1 Power sources — Connect this unit only to power sources

specified in the Operating Instructionsj and as marked on the

unit.

2 AC power cord

- When disconnecting the AC power cord, pull it out by the AC

power plug. Do not pull the cord itself.

- Never handle the AC power plug with wet hands, as this could

result in fire or electrical shock.

- Power cords should be firmly secured to avoid being severely

bent, pinched, or walked upon. Pay particular attention to

the cord from the unit to the power socket.

- Avoid overloading AC power plugs and extension cords

beyond their capacity, as this could result in fire or electrical

shock.

3 When not in use — Unplug the AC power cord from the AC

outlet if the unit will not be used for several months or more.

When the cord is plugged in, a small electrical current continues

to flow into the unit, even if the power is turned off.

4 In case of lightning — Immediately disconnect the AC power

cord from the AC outlet.

Maintenance

Clean the unit only as recommended inthe Operating Instructions.

Have this unit serviced by a qualified service technician if:

- The AC power cord or plug has been damaged

- A foreign objector liquid have entered the unit

- The unit has been exposed to rain or water

- The unit does not seem to operate normally

- The unit exhibits a marked change in performance

- The unit has been dropped, or the cabinet has been damaged

To optimize the performance of this player, please take the time to

read through these Operating Instructions and become familiar

with the operating procedures.

Features

DVD: providing a completely new dimension in video

entertainment.

● With the multi-language function you can select an audio

soundtrack in up to 8 languages, and subtitles in up to 32

languages.

With the multi-angle function you can select a viewing angle

of scenes shot from multiple camera angles and recorded on

the disc.

With the parental lock function you can prevent playback of

specified discs unsuitable for certain audiences.

Please read the following before operating the DVD player.

This DVD player can play discs with the following marks only.

DIGITAL AUDIO

● Do not use irregular shape CDs (example: heart-shaped,

octagonal ones). It may result in malfunctions.

Color system of the DVDS and video CDs

This unit is designed for the NTSC co/or systems only.

The materials for both the DVD discs and the video CDs are

recorded in the PAL and NTSC color systems.

Select the DVDS and video CDs recorded in the NTSC color

svstem.

Notes on DVDS and video CDs

Some playback operations of DVDS and video CDs may be

intentionally fixed by software manufacturers. As this player plays

DVDS and video CDs according to disc contents designed by the

software manufacturer, some playback features of this player may

not be available, or other functions may be added.

Also refer to the instructions supplied with the DVDS and video

CDs.

Some DVDS made for business purposes may not be played on

this player.

Region code of the DVD player and DVDS

This DVD player is designed and manufactured for playback of

region”1” encoded DVD software. Region code labels appear on

the labels of some DVD discs to indicate which type of player can

play those discs. Unless “1” is included in these labels, or “ALL”

appears on the DVD disc labels, those discs cannot be played on

this player. If you try to play these discs, the message “REGIONAL

CODE VIOLATION” will appear on the TV screen. Some DVD discs

may not have a region code label even though their playback is

prohibited by area limits.

Note on DTS-encoded CDs

When playing DTS-encoded CDs, excessive noise will be exhibited

from the analog stereo outputs. To avoid possible damage to the

audio system, the consumer should take proper pre-cautions when

the analog stereo outputs of the CD player is connected to an

amplification system. To enjoy DTS Digital SurroundTMplayback,

an external 5.1 channel DTS Digital SurroundTMdecoder system

must be conneted to the digital output (S/PDIF, AES/EBU, or

TosLink) of the CD player.

Title

The longest section of a picture or a musical piece on a DVD; a

movie for a picture piece on video software, or an album for a

musical piece on audio software

Each title is assigned a title number enabling you to locate the title

you want.

Chapter

Sections of a picture or a musical piece that are smaller than titles

A title is composed of several chapters. Each chapter is

assigned a chapter number, enabling you to locate the

chapter you want. Depending on the disc, there maybe no chapter

recorded.

Track

Sections of a picture or a musical piece on a video CD or an audio

Each track is assigned a track number, enabling you to locate the

track you want.

Scene

On a video CD with PBC (playback control) functions, moving

pictures and still pictures are divided into sections called “Scenes”.

Each scene is displayed inthe menu screen and assigned a scene

number, enabling you to locate the scene you want.

A scene is composed of one or several tracks.

There are two types of video CDs.

Video CDs equipped with PBC (Version 2.0)

PBC (playback control) allows you to interact with the system via

menus, search functions or other typical computer-like operations.

Moreover, still pictures of high resolution can be played, if they

are included in the disc.

Video CDs not equipped with PBC (Version 1.1)

Operated in the same way as audio CDs, these discs allow

playback of video pictures as well as sound, but they are not

equipped with PBC.

This player cannot play discs such as CD-ROMs, other than those

listed in the table on this page, including PHOTO CDs, CD-1, DVD-

ROMS.

When shipping the DVD player

The original shipping carton and packing materials come in handy.

For maximum protection, re-pack the unit as it was originally

packed at the factory.

When setting the DVD player

The picture and sound of a nearby TV, VCR or radio may be

distorted during DVD playback. In this case, position the player

away from the TV, radio or VCR, or turn off the player after removing

the disc.

To keep the surface clean

Do not use volatile liquids, such as insecticide spray, near the

player. Do not leave rubber or plastic products in contact with the

player for along period of time.They will leave marks on the surface.

Fingerprints and dust on the disc can cause poor picture quality

and sound distortion, Before playing, clean the disc with a clean

cloth. Wipe the disc from the center out.

Do not use strong solvents such as alcohol, benzene, thinner,

commercially available cleaners or anti-static spray intended for

analog records.

Do not touch the playback side of the disc.

Hold the disc by the edges so that fingerprints will not get on the

surface.

Do not stick paper or tape on the disc.

To clean the cabinet

Use a soft, dry cloth. If the surfaces are extremely dirty, use a soft

cloth lightly moistened with a mild detergent solution. Do not use

strong solvents, such as alcohol, benzene or thinner, as these

might damage the surface of the player.

To obtain a clear picture

The DVD player is a high-tech, precision device. If the

optical pick-up lens and disc drive parts are dirty or worn down,

the picture quality will be poor.

Regular inspection and maintenance are recommended after every

1,000 hours of use. (This depends on the operating environment.)

After playing, store the disc in its case.

Do not expose the disc to direct sunlight or sources of heat, or

leave it in a parked car exposed to direct sunlight, as there may

be a considerable temperature increase inside the car.

It isforbidden by law to copy, broadcast, show, broadcast via cable,

play in public, or rent copyright material without permission,

This product features the copy protection function developed by

Macrovision, Copy protection signals are recorded on some discs.

When recording and playing the pictures of these discs on a VCR,

the picture noise will appear.

This products incorporates copyright protection technology that is

protected by U.S. patents and other intellectual property rights.

Use of this copyright protection technology must be authorized by

Macrovision, and is intended for home and other limited pay-per-

view uses only, unless otherwise authorized by Macrovision.

Reverse engineering or disassembly is prohibited.

This player shows On-Screen Display messages on the screen of the TV set to which the DVD player is connected, as well as those

on the display panel of the unit.

The On-Screen Display messages, which accompany each operation of the unit, make operation simple and easy especially when

playing DVDS or video CDs. They are also displayed when pressing the DISPLAY button on the remote control.

The instructions in this manual refer mainly to the On-Screen Display messages.

Display symbols for DVDS

@DVD is displayed when a DVD disc is loaded.

@)ANGLE is displayed when a multi-angle scene comes on

during playback.

@DTS is displayed when sounds recorded in DTS are played

back.

@DOLBY DIGITAL is displayed when sounds recorded in Dolby

Digital (AC-3) are played back.

Display symbols for videolaudio CDs

@CD lights up when an audio CD is loaded, and VIDEO CD

lights up when a video CD is loaded.

@ PBC (playback control) lights up when a video CD (version

2.0) with its PBC feature activated is loaded.

@RANDOM lights up during random play.

Display symbols for all discs

@RESUME indicates when the unit remembers the point at

which playback stopped on the inserted disc. Playback will

begin from this point.

@Q SURROUND lights up when the Q SURROUND is turned

on.

@The repeat playback indicators light up during repeat play.

The repeat playback cannot be performed for video CDs with

their PBC feature activated.

REPEAT:

All the tracks on the disc are played back

repeatedly.

REPEAT 1: One track is played back repeatedly.

REPEAT A-B: A desired portion is played back repeatedly.

@The playback indicator rotates during playback.

@The TITLE, TRK (title, track) number indicates;

- the number of the title being played during playback of a

DVD disc.

- the total number of tracks in stop mode and the number of

the track being played back in playback mode, when an

audio CD, a video CD (version 1.1) or a video CD (version

2.o with the PBC feature disabled) is loaded.

“PBC” is displayed here when a video CD (version 2.0) with

its PBC feature activated is loaded.

CHP, INDEX (chapter, index) number indicates the

number of the chapter being played during playback of a DVD

disc.

@The time counter indicates;

- the total playing time of an audio CD or a video CD in stop

mode.

- the elapsed playing time or the remaining playback time of

the title/chapter/disc/track of an audio CD, a video CD or a

DVD in playback mode.

SET UP button is used to change the display.

When a video CD with its PBC feature activated is loaded,

time indication does not appear.

(@The registered track numbers are displayed (up to 16) in

stop mode during playback of an audio CD or a video CD.

The number of the track being played flashes during

playback, and the track numbers already played back

disappear.

When a video CD with its PBC feature activated is loaded,

the track numbers do not appear.

At first, decide the outline of the connection among this unit, your TV set and the amplifier, etc. It is necessary to set the setup menu of

this unit according to the connection.

Before connection, identify the type of your audio equipment or of the TV set referring to the following chart. Then decide the connection

Before making connections

● Connect the AC cords of the unit and external equipment at

the end, after finishing the other connections.

● Insert the plugs completely into the jacks. Loose connections

may produce a humming sound or other noise interference.

● Refer to the instructions for the connected equipment.

CAUTION

Do not select “Dolby Digital” in the “Audio Output Setting” when

connecting to an AV amplifier not equipped with a Dolby Digital

decoder (with an optical connecting cord).

Merely attempting to play a DVD may cause a high level of noise

which could be harmful to your ears and damage the speakers. In

such a case, be sure to select “Down Mix PCM” in the “Digital

Stream”.

This DVD player contains a Dolby Digital decoder, and enables the playback of DVDS recorded in Dolby Digital Surround without the

need for an optional decoder with Dolby Digital processing. Once the DVD player is connected to a decoder with Dolby Digital processing

or an AV amplifier which is equipped with a Dolby Digital decoder, you can enjoy theater-quality realistic audio sound right in your own

home when playing the DVDS recorded in Dolby Digital Surround.

Connect the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jack of the DVD player to the DIGITAL IN jack of the decoder or AV amplifier with an optional optical

connecting cord.

Type to Surround is recommended. You can enjoy the

surround sound from the speakers connected to the

amplifier.

CAUTION

If the AV amplifier is not equipped with a Dolby Digital decoder, do

not select “DOLBY DIGITAL’ in the “Audio Output Setting” when

connecting the AV amplifier with an optical connecting cord.

Merely attempting to play a DVD may cause a high level of noise

which could be harmful to your ears and damage the speakers. In

such a case, be sure to select “Down Mix PCM” in the “Digital

Stream”.

This DVD player contains a DTS decoder, and enables the playback of DVDSrecorded in DTS Surround without the need for an optional

decoder with DTS processing. Once the DVD player is connected to a decoder with DTS processing or an AV amplifier which is

equipped with a DTS decoder, you can enjoy theater-quality realistic audio sound right in your own home when playing the DVDS

recorded in DTS Surround.

Connect the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jack of the DVD player to the DIGITAL IN jack of the decoder or AV amplifier with an optional optical

Component video output connector (PR/PB/Y)

The component video output connector outputs the different color

signals (PtiPB) and luminance signal (Y) separately in order to

achieve high fidelity in reproducing colors.

The description of the component video output connectors may

differ depending on the TV set or monitor (e.g. PR/PB/YCR/CBN,

R-Y/B-Y/Y, etc.). Refer to the operating instructions of the TV set

for detail.

Connect headphones to the PHONES jack with a stereo

standard plug, and adjust the volume with PHONE LEVEL.

Installing batteries

Detach the battery cover on the rear of the remote control, and

insert two R6 (size AA) batteries with 0 and 0 aligned correctly.

When to replace the batteries

The maximum operational distance between the remote control

and the sensor of the units should be approximately 5 meters (16

feet). If this distance decreases, replace the batteries with new

ones.

● When operating with the remote control, point the top of the

remote control toward the player.

● If the unit is not going to be used for an extended period of time,

remove the batteries to prevent possible electrolyte leakage.

● The remote control may not operate correctly when:

- The line of sight between the remote control and the unit is

exposed to intense light, such as direct sunlight

- There is fluorescent lighting near the remote sensor in the

display panel window.

- Other remote controls are used nearby (those of a TV set, etc.).

About the Q symbol display

● The @ symbol will be displayed on the screen if you press

a button which cannot be used or enter an incorrect number.

● Some DVD discs may have places where they do not allow

pressing the STOi? SKIR or other buttons. The @ mark

will be displayed on the screen if you press a button that is

not allowed in such a place.

Getting ready to play

. Turn on the television, and set its video source (Video 1, Video

2, Video 3, etc.) to the one connected to the DVD player.

● Turn on the audio device connected to the DVD player. Set its

input source to the one connected to the DVD player.

Press POWER on the DVD player.

The power comes on, and the STANDBY lamp on the

POWER turns green.

Press A OPEN / CLOSE.

The disc tray opens.

Load a disc.

Place a disc in the tray guides (depression), with the label

side facing up. When loading an 8-cm disc, place it in the

inner depression.

Press 40 PEN / CLOSE.

The disc tray closes, and the DVD player automatically

begins to play the disc.

If the disc does not begin to play, press >PLAY,
