PRE-INSTALLATION CHECKLIST
My building structure is suitable for fan mounting.
The standard mount included with this fan allows the fan to be hung from angle irons mounted to
bar joists or from an I-beam. Do not mount the fan to a single purlin, truss, or bar joist. Consult a
structural engineer for mounting methods not covered in this manual.
A structural engineer approved the mounting structure.
The mounting structure must be able to withstand the torque forces generated by the fan.
I am familiar with the function of the safety cables.
The fan will be installed so that the airfoils are at least 10 ft (3 m) above the floor.
The fan will be installed so that the airfoils have a minimum of 2 ft (610 mm) of clearance from
obstructions and the building structure.
The distance of the fan from the obstruction should be measured from the edge of the winglets to
the obstruction.
The fan will be installed so that it is not subjected to high winds such as from a Heating,
Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system or near a large garage door.
If the fan is mounted at the same level or higher than a diuser, the winglets must be at a distance
that is at least 1x the measure of the fan’s diameter. If the fan is mounted below a diuser, the
winglets must be at a distance that is at least 2x the measure of the fan’s diameter.
The distance between multiple fans will be at least 2.5x the fans’ diameter when measured from
the centers of the fans.
The airfoils and other fan components are those that were shipped with the motor unit.
If installing multiple fans, do not mix and match fan components.
The supply power circuit is the appropriate size and voltage, and power wiring is routed to the
fan’s Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) installation site.

If my fan’s extension tube is 4 ft (1.2 m) or longer, if the fan is exposed to high winds or
crosswinds, or if the fan is installed near any building fixtures, I will secure the fan with the
provided guy wires as a safety measure.
The upper mount is the correct size for the mounting structure.

WARNING: Installation work and electrical wiring must be done by qualified person(s) in accordance with all applicable codes and
standards, including fire-rated construction. Incorrect assembly can cause electric shock or damage the motor and the controller.
WARNING: Installation must be in accordance with the requirements set forth by the National Electrical Code (NEC), ANSI/NFPA 70, and
all national and local codes.
WARNING: The fan should not be installed unless the structure on which it is to be mounted is of sound construction, undamaged, and
capable of supporting the load of the fan and its method of mounting. A structural engineer should verify the structure is adequate prior
to installation. Verifying the stability of the mounting structure is the sole responsibility of the customer and/or end user, and Big Ass
Fans hereby expressly disclaims any liability arising therefrom, or arising from the use of any materials or hardware other than those
supplied by Big Ass Fans or otherwise specified in these installation instructions.
WARNING: The fan must be installed with parts that are marked (on their cartons) to indicate suitability with this model. Other similar
parts cannot be substituted.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and injury to persons, Big Ass Fans must be installed with Big Ass Fans-supplied
controllers. Other parts cannot be substituted.
CAUTION: For VFDs that do not contain fusing, power must be supplied via a dedicated circuit breaker, properly fused disconnect, or
other suitable means of branch circuit, short circuit, and ground fault protection. Refer to your national and local electrical codes for
requirements.
ATTENTION: If installing the fan in the United States, the fan must be installed per the following National Fire Protection Association
(NFPA) guidelines:
The fan must be centered approximately between four adjacent sprinklers.
The vertical distance from the fan to the sprinkler deflector must be at least 3 ft (914 mm).
The fan must be interlocked to shut down immediately upon receiving a waterflow signal from the alarm system.
WARNING: Ensure there are no persons below the fan during installation.
WARNING: When cutting or drilling into a wall or ceiling, do not damage electrical wiring and other hidden utilities.
CAUTION: The main fan unit is heavy. Use caution when raising it. A suitable means for lifting the weight of the fan, such as a scissor
lift, and at least two installation personnel will be required.
WARNING: The fan VFD contains high voltage capacitors which take time to discharge after removal of mains supply. Before working
on the VFD, ensure isolation of main supply from line inputs at the VFD or fan controller’s disconnect. Wait three minutes for capacitors
to discharge to safe voltage levels. Failure to do so may result in personal injury or death. Darkened display LEDs are not an indication
of safe voltage levels.
CAUTION: The installation of this fan requires the use of some power tools. Follow the safety procedures found in the owner’s manual
for each of these tools and do not use them for purposes other than those intended by the manufacturer.
CAUTION: Do not bend the airfoils when installing, servicing, or cleaning the fan. Do not insert foreign objects between rotating airfoils.
CAUTION: Mounting of the suspension system and replacement of parts of the safety suspension system shall be performed by the
manufacturer, its service agent, or suitably qualified persons.
WARNING: Use this unit only in the manner intended by the manufacturer. If you have questions, contact the manufacturer.
WARNING: If unusual oscillating movement is observed, immediately stop using the ceiling fan and contact the manufacturer, its service
agent, or suitably qualified persons.
CAUTION: Do not operate any fan with a damaged cord or plug. Discard fan or return to an authorized service facility for examination
and/or repair.
WARNING: This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities,
or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a
person responsible for their safety. Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance.
WARNING: Risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons during cleaning and user maintenance. Disconnect the appliance from the
power supply before servicing.
WARNING: Before servicing or cleaning unit, switch power o at service panel and lock the service disconnecting means to prevent
power from being switched on accidentally. When the service disconnecting means cannot be locked, securely fasten a prominent
warning device, such as a tag, to the service panel.
WARNING: When service or replacement of a fan component requires the removal or disconnection of a safety device, the safety device
is to be reinstalled or remounted as previously installed.
CAUTION: The Big Ass Fans product warranty will not cover equipment damage or failure that is caused by improper installation or use.

WHERE TO INSTALL YOUR FAN
Before installation, make sure the building structure and fan location meet the following requirements.
Mounting guidelines
The standard mount included with this fan allows the fan to be hung from angle irons mounted to bar joists
or from an I-beam. Do not mount the fan to a single purlin, truss, or bar joist. Consult a structural engineer
for mounting methods not covered in this manual.
Big Ass Fans does not recommend mounting the fan to a fabricated I-beam. Fans mounted to fabricated
I-beams, which are common in steel buildings, could cause the beam to flex and the fan to move
significantly during operation.
The fan must be installed so that it hangs vertically and horizontally level from the mounting structure.
The fan’s lateral movement must be secured using guy wires if the fan’s extension tube is 4 ft (1.2 m) or
longer, if the mounting structure requires it, if the fan is exposed to high winds or crosswinds, or if the fan is
close to any building fixtures.
Clearance guidelines
If your fan application does not meet these requirements, contact Customer Service to discuss alternative
installations or other fan options.
General clearance
The fan must be installed so that it is at least 10 ft (3 m) above the finished floor.
Multiple fans must be spaced at a center-to-center distance that is no less than 2.5x the fan diameter.
All fan parts must be ≥ 2 ft (610 mm) from all obstructions. The fan installation area must be free of
obstructions such as lights, cables, sprinklers, or other building structure components.
If the fan is mounted at the same level or higher than an HVAC diuser, the winglets must be at a distance
that is at least 1x the measure of the fan’s diameter. If the fan is mounted below an HVAC diuser, the
winglets must be at a distance that is at least 2x the measure of the fan’s diameter.
See the manufacturer’s requirements for the minimum clearance to combustibles.
Ceiling clearance
The fan must be installed at the distance listed below according to your fan size. The distance from the ceiling
should be measured from the top of the winglets to the ceiling.

SUPPLY POWER GUIDELINES
Before beginning fan installation, route power wiring to the VFD installation site. Refer to the minimum supply
circuit requirements for your fan size below.
Power wiring guidelines
Dedicated Branch Circuit Protection. Each fan requires dedicated branch circuit protection.
Conduit. VFD output/motor input leads cannot share a conduit with any other controller’s AC supply feed.
Local Disconnect. If required, a local disconnect should be installed per all national and local codes.
Manual Disconnect. To satisfy some local code requirements, it may be necessary to install a manual
disconnect at the fan motor location when the fan is not within line-of-sight of the controller.

Big Ass Fans does not recommend mounting the fan to a fabricated
I-beam.
Do not mount the fan directly to an I-beam without the upper mount,
extension tube, and lower yoke.
The I-beam must be part of the existing building structure.
Install spacers if the flange thickness exceeds 3/8” (10 mm).
For an angled I-beam or pitched roof, the beam flange width must
be 5” to 9-7/8” (127 to 251 mm).

PREPARING THE MOUNTING STRUCTURE: BAR JOISTS
Bar joist mounting guidelines
The fan must be hung from angle irons mounted to bar joists.
The installer must supply the angle irons and angle iron hardware.
Do not install the fan from a single purlin, truss, or bar joist.
Angle iron spans should not exceed 12 ft (3.7 m).
The angle irons must be fastened to the roof structure at each end.

2. Drill angle irons
Drill two Ø9/16” (14 mm) holes exactly 5-1/2” (140 mm) apart in the centers of two angle irons.
Measure the distance between the roof structure mounting points that the angle irons will span. Measure the
same distance on the angle irons and drill a Ø9/16” (14 mm) hole through each end of the angle irons. Drill holes
in the ends of two angle irons if the span is 8 ft (2.4 m) or less. Drill holes in the ends of four angle irons if the
span is greater than 8 ft (2.4 m).
3. Fasten angle irons together (if span is > 8 ft [2.4 m])
If the angle iron span is 8 ft (2.4 m) or less, skip to step 4.
If the angle iron span is longer than 8 ft (2.4 m), use double angle irons. Locate the center of the angle irons. Drill
a Ø9/16” (14 mm) hole in the center of the vertical wall of each angle iron. Drill a total of four angle irons.
Place two drilled angle irons back to back and fasten them together with Grade 8 hardware. Align the angle
irons to each other and tighten the bolts to 40 ft·lb (54.2 N·m) using a torque wrench and 3/4” (19 mm) socket.
Repeat this step for the remaining two angle irons.

4. Determine roof structure mounting points
The angle irons should be aligned with the outermost holes of the upper mount.
Determine the mounting points in the roof structure for the angle irons. Consult the appropriate diagram below

5. Fasten angle irons to roof structure mounting points
Fasten the angle irons to the roof structure mounting points at each end with Grade 8 hardware. Do not fully
tighten the hardware.
Single Angle Irons: Position the angle irons so that the horizontal legs face each other (vertical legs are on the
outside).
Double Angle Irons: Position the angle irons with fan mounting holes on the inside, facing each other.

PREPARING THE MOUNTING STRUCTURE: I-BEAM
I-Beam mounting guidelines
Big Ass Fans does not recommend mounting the fan to a fabricated I-beam.
Do not mount the fan directly to an I-beam without the upper mount, extension tube, and lower yoke.
The I-beam must be part of the existing building structure.
Select mounting holes
Measure the flange width of the I-beam from which the fan will be hung. Select the upper mount mounting holes
that match the flange width.

INSTALLING THE FAN
WARNING: Disconnect power to the installation locations before installing the fan and controller!
1. Assemble upper mount
If you are mounting the fan directly to angle irons without the upper mount, extension tube, and lower yoke,
skip to step 7b.
Attach the upper yoke brackets to the pivot bracket with the Standard Mount Hardware. Tighten the bolts to
40ft·lb (54.2 N·m) using a torque wrench and 3/4” (19 mm) socket.
Loosely attach the mount brackets to the pivot bracket with the remaining Standard Mount Hardware. Install the
center bolts first. Do not fully tighten the hardware. This allows for angle adjustments after the upper mount is
attached to the mounting structure.

a. (10) 1/2-13 x 1-1/2” GR 8 Bolt
b. (20) 1/2” Flat Washer
c. (10) 1/2-13 Nylock Nut

2. Attach upper mount to mounting structure
Angle irons should be aligned with the outermost holes of the upper mount.
Do not use beam clips on angle irons.
Spacers are used only on I-beams when the beam flange exceeds 3/8” (10 mm).
Make sure the spacers are oriented as shown.
Secure the upper mount to the angle irons or I-beam with the Mounting Structure Hardware. Tighten the bolts to
40ft·lb (54.2 N·m) using a torque wrench and 3/4” (19 mm) socket. After securing the upper mount to the angle
irons, tighten all the bolts securing the angle irons to the roof structure to 40 ft·lb (54.2 N·m) using a torque
wrench and 3/4” (19 mm) socket.

b. (8) 1/2’’ Flat Washer
c. (4) 1/2-13 Nylock Nut

4. Confirm orientation and tighten hardware
Allow the extension tube to hang so that it is vertically and horizontally level, making any necessary angle
adjustments to the upper mount. When the tube is properly positioned, tighten the Extension Tube Hardware
and the Standard Mount Hardware to 40 ft·lb (54.2N·m) using a torque wrench and 3/4” (19 mm) socket.
Tighten the center Standard Mount Hardware bolts first.
3. Install extension tube
Attach the extension tube to the upper mount with the Extension Tube Hardware. Do not fully tighten the
hardware.

6. Install lower yoke brackets
Attach the lower yoke brackets to the bottom of the extension tube with the Lower Yoke Hardware. Do not fully
tighten the hardware.

5. Secure upper safety cable
The upper safety cable is a crucial part of the fan and must be installed correctly. If you have
any questions, contact Customer Service for assistance.
Wrap the upper safety cable (pre-attached to extension tube) around the angle irons or I-beam and secure the
looped ends with the shackle. The cable must be drawn tightly around the mounting structure, leaving as little
slack as possible with the shackle on the topside of the mounting structure. Securely tighten the shackle.

7a. Install main fan unit
If you are mounting the fan directly to angle irons without the upper mount, extension tube, and lower yoke,

The lower safety cables are a crucial part of the fan and must be installed correctly. If you have
any questions, contact Customer Service for assistance.
Attach the main fan unit to the lower yoke brackets with the
Motor Unit Hardware. Do not rest the main fan unit on the
ground. Tighten the bolts to 40 ft·lb (54.2N·m) using a torque
wrench and 3/4” (19 mm) socket.
After securing the main fan unit to the lower yoke brackets,
tighten the bolts securing the lower yoke brackets to the
extension tube to 40 ft·lb (54.2N·m) using a torque wrench
and 3/4” (19 mm) socket.

Drill a Ø9/16” (14 mm) hole in the center of each angle iron exactly
10” (254 mm) from the fan mounting holes as shown. Secure the
two lower safety cables (pre-attached to main fan unit) to the holes
with installer-supplied Grade 8 hardware. Tighten the bolts to
40ft·lb (54.2N·m) using a torque wrench and 3/4” (19 mm) socket.

8. Install Electronic Programming Module (EPM)
If installing multiple fans, make sure to install the exact EPM included in each fan’s packaging.
EPMs are not interchangeable.
The Electronic Programming Module (EPM) contains all
programming information specific to fan operation. It must
be installed prior to applying power to the VFD.
Insert the EPM into the VFD in the location shown. The EPM
can only be inserted one way. Do not force it.
9a. Mount VFD to motor frame
If you are remotely mounting the VFD, skip to step 9b.
Big Ass Fans does not provide additional means of disconnect when the VFD is mounted
onboard the fan. If preferred or required by local or national code, the installer should provide
additional means of disconnect as specified by the owner of the fan or the facility manager.
A. Install mounting brackets
Attach the VFD mounting brackets to the fan motor
frame with the Mounting Bracket Hardware. Do not
fully tighten the nuts.
