The instrument described in the operating instructions has been designed and manufactured using state-of-the-
art technology. All components are subject to stringent quality and environmental criteria during production. Our
management systems are certied to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
These operating instructions contain important information on handling the instrument. Working safely requires that
all safety instructions and work instructions are observed.
Observe the relevant local accident prevention regulations and general safety regulations for the instrument’s range
of use.
The operating instructions are part of the product and must be kept in the immediate vicinity of the instrument and
readily accessible to skilled personnel at any time. Pass the operating instructions on to the next operator or owner
of the instrument.
Skilled personnel must have carefully read and understood the operating instructions prior to beginning any work.

2.2 Functional description
The ow switch works by the calorimetric principle and is used to convert the ow rate into an electric signal. The
instrument shows the ow rate in per cent on the digital display.
Optionally, the instrument measures the medium temperature.
The instrument can output up to 2 output signals as parameterised.
Switching signal for ow limit values
Switching signal for temperature limit values
Switching signal for diagnostic function
Analogue signal ow
Analogue signal temperature

14153887.02 08/2017 EN/DE/FR/ES
3. Safety
The ow switch is used for monitoring ow losses and dry run. With analogue signal the ow switch should only be
used as a trend indicator, in order to monitor process changes, such as lter blocking.
Only use the ow switch in applications that lie within its technical performance limits.
→ For performance limits see chapter 9 “Specications”.
Refrain from unauthorised modications to the ow switch.
Any use beyond or dierent to the intended use is considered as improper use.
The manufacturer shall not be liable for claims of any type based on operation contrary to the intended use.
3.3 Personnelqualication
Skilled personnel
Skilled personnel, authorised by the operator, are understood to be personnel who, based on their technical training,
knowledge of measurement and control technology and on their experience and knowledge of country-specic regula-
tions, current standards and directives, are capable of carrying out the work described and independently recognising
potential hazards.
Special operating conditions require further appropriate knowledge, e.g. of aggressive media.

4. Transport, packaging and storage
4. Transport, packaging and storage
4.1 Transport
Check the ow switch for any damage that may have been caused by transport.
Obvious damage must be reported immediately.
4.2 Packaging and storage
Do not remove packaging until just before mounting.
Keep the packaging as it will provide optimum protection during transport (e.g. change in installation site, sending for
repair).
Permissible conditions at the place of storage:
Storage temperature: -20 ... +80 °C
Humidity: 45 ... 75 % relative humidity (no condensation)
Avoid exposure to the following factors:
Direct sunlight or proximity to hot objects
Mechanical vibration, mechanical shock (putting it down hard)
Soot, vapour, dust and corrosive gases
Humid or wet environment
Hazardous environments, ammable atmospheres

5. Commissioning, operation
5. Commissioning, operation
5.1 Mechanical mounting
Only use the ow switch if it is in perfect condition with respect to safety.
Prior to commissioning, the ow switch must be subjected to a visual inspection.
Commissioning and operation of the instrument may only be carried out by skilled personnel, see chapter 3.3 “Person-
nel qualication”.
5.1.1 Requirements for mounting point
The mounting position and probe length are extremely important for the quality and reliability of the measuring results.
The mounting point must meet the following conditions:
Sealing faces are clean and undamaged.
Sucient space for a safe electrical installation.
For information on tapped holes and welding sockets, see
Technical information IN 00.14 at www.wika.com.
Permissible ambient and medium temperatures remain
within the performance limits. Consider possible restric-
tions on the ambient temperature range caused by mating
connector used.
→ For performance limits see chapter 9 “Specications”
The probe tip must be completely surrounded by medium.
Position the probe tip in the area of maximum ow rate
(pipe centre).
The minimum immersion depth of the probe is L ≥16 mm.
The probe tip must not touch the opposite wall.

5.1.2 Recommended mounting positions
Horizontal pipes
Only if the pipeline is free from
deposits.
Only if the pipeline is completely lled
with medium.
Risers and vertical pipes
Mounting the ow switch in downpipes open towards the bottom is forbidden. This use does not comply with the intended use.
5. Commissioning, operation

EN
14153887.02 08/2017 EN/DE/FR/ES
5.1.3 Probe alignment
During mechanical assembly of the FSD-3, make sure
that the installation mark points in the opposite direction
of the ow direction of the medium.
5.1.4 Sealing
For sealing the process connections with parallel
threads, use at gaskets, lens-type sealing rings or WIKA
prole sealings at the sealing face. With a tapered thread
(e.g. NPT thread), sealing is made in the thread using
additional sealing materials, e.g. PTFE tape (EN 837-2).
For further information on seals see WIKA
data sheet AC 09.08 or at www.wika.com.
5.1.5 Disturbing interferences in the piping system
For correct measurement, the ow switch requires a fully
characterised ow prole. This is why calming sections
must be provided in the pipeline after a pump, a pipe
elbow, installed parts and changes in cross-section.

5.1.6 Mounting the instrument
The max. torque depends on the mounting point (e.g. material and shape). If you have any questions,
please contact our application consultant.
→ For contact details see chapter 1 “General information” or the back page of the operating instructions.
If a process connection adapter (optional) is used, rst screw it into the mounting point by hand and then tighten it
using a torque spanner. Use enclosed sealing.
1. Depressurise the system and switch o the ow.
2
.
Seal the process connection (→ see “Sealing variants”).
3
.
At the mounting point, screw the ow switch in hand-tight.
4
.
Tighten with a torque spanner using the spanner ats.
5.2 Electrical mounting
Requirements for voltage supply
Power supply: DC 15 ... 35 V
The power supply for the ow switch must be made via an energy-limited electrical circuit in accordance with section
9.3 of UL/EN/IEC 61010-1 or an LPS to UL/EN/IEC 60950-1 or class 2 in accordance with UL1310/UL1585 (NEC or
CEC). The voltage supply must be suitable for operation above 2,000 m above sea level, should the ow switch be
used at this altitude.
Requirement for shielding and grounding
The ow switch must be shielded and grounded in accordance with the grounding concept of the plant.
The instrument must be grounded via the process connection.
Connecting the instrument
1. Assemble the mating connector.
→ see pin assignment
2
.
Establish the plug connection.

5.7 Switching functions
Hysteresis function
If the ow rate uctuates around the set point, the hysteresis keeps the
switching status of the outputs stable. With increasing ow rate, the output
switches when reaching the switch point (SP).
Contact normally open (HNO): Active
Contact normally closed (HNC): Inactive
With the ow rate falling again, the output will not switch back before the
reset point (RP) is reached.
