Precautions
Location
Using the unit in the following locations can result in a malfunc-
tion.
• In direct sunlight

Power supply
Please connect the designated AC adapter to an AC outlet of
the correct voltage. Do not connect it to an AC outlet of voltage
other than that for which your unit is intended.
Interference with other electrical devices
Radios and televisions placed nearby may experience recep-
tion interference. Operate this unit at a suitable distance from
radios and televisions.
Handling
To avoid breakage, do not apply excessive force to the switches
or controls.
Care
If the exterior becomes dirty, wipe it with a clean, dry cloth. Do
not use liquid cleaners such as benzene or thinner, or cleaning
compounds or flammable polishes.
Keep this manual
After reading this manual, please keep it for later reference.
Keeping foreign matter out of your equipment
Never set any container with liquid in it near this equipment. If
liquid gets into the equipment, it could cause a breakdown, fire,
or electrical shock.
Be careful not to let metal objects get into the equipment. If
something does slip into the equipment, unplug the AC adapter
from the wall outlet. Then contact your nearest Korg dealer or
the store where the equipment was purchased.

Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the Korg MS-20M Kit Monophonic
Synthesizer Module Kit.
To ensure trouble-free enjoyment, please carefully read this
manual and use the product correctly. In addition, be sure to
store this manual in a safe place for future reference.
The MS-20M is a modular synthesizer that recreates the sound
of the MS-20, which was released in 1978. Using similar parts
with comparable specifications on a circuit board of nearly the
same design, the MS-20M recreates the sound of the original
MS-20 when it was first released. The newly added PWM, EG 2
NORMAL OUT, CV IN (V/Oct) and V-TRIG IN jacks provide
greater flexibility. Since the MS-20M is not equipped with a key-
board or modulation wheel, the functions related to those fea-
tures have been removed.
For details on the differences between the MS-20 and MS-20M,
refer to “MS-20M Parts and Their Functions” on page 13.
We recommend reading the reprint of the original Owner’s Man-
ual for in-depth descriptions of the original controls and their
functions.
Since this manual contains additional information and details on
new functions, carefully read this manual together with the orig-
inal Owner’s Manual.
* The original Owner’s Manual contains terms and phrases used
at the time of the original product release in 1978. The manual
may also contain information that differs from the MS-20M Kit or
may mention products that are no longer available. In addition,
the specifications contain details and measurement standards
from the time of the original MS-20 release, which differ from
those of the MS-20M Kit.
Assembly
Precautions before assembly
Avoiding injuries while handling parts
Carefully handle the circuit boards to avoid injuries that could be
inadvertently caused by protruding parts. Protect your hands by
wearing (cotton) work gloves. In addition, be sure to wash your
hands with soap when finished with the assembly procedure.
Properly aligning screws and nuts before tightening
Tightening screws and nuts inserted at an angle may damage
the threading, preventing them from being fully tightened. Be
sure to align screws properly before tightening them.
In addition, be careful not to tighten screws with excessive force
or over tighten them, otherwise the parts may be damaged.
Preventing injuries and scratches to parts while using tools
When using tools to tighten screws and nuts, be careful to avoid
injuries, for example, to your fingers. In addition, carefully han-
dle tools to avoid scratching panels, etc.
Provide a sufficiently large work space to complete the assem-
bly procedure, and prepare work mats so parts will not be
scratched.
Preventing loss of screws and nuts
Carefully handle the included screws and nuts so they will not
be lost. In addition, do not use screws or nuts other than those
included for assembly, and do not use the included screws and
nuts for any other purpose.
TIP Extra screws and nuts are included. Use them as spares.
Tools to prepare
Phillips (+) screwdrivers: Use a screwdriver that’s appropri-
ate for the size of the screw. Using a screwdriver of the wrong
size may damage the screw or may not properly tighten the
screw.
Box-end wrench (included): Use for tightening 11 mm and 12
mm hex nuts.
Mini-wrench (included): Use for tightening knurled nuts.

Checking package contents
Before beginning the assembly process, make sure that all of the parts are available.
If any part is missing or damaged, contact your local Korg distributor.
TIP There are more screws, nuts, and washers than the number that will be used.

Assembling the top panel section
1. Mounting the rubber bushings on the top panel
Install the rubber bushings in the fourteen locations on the top panel.
Caution: Make sure that the installation locations are correct.

Assembling the bottom panel section and the top panel section
1. Attaching the rubber feet to the bottom panel
Install the rubber feet in the four locations on the bottom panel. Insert the rubber feet into the installation holes in the bottom
panel, and then insert the tip of the screwdriver into the center of the rubber feet and secure them.
Caution: Be careful to avoid injuries from the tip of the screwdriver.
2. Attaching the bottom panel with the included screws (B)
Attach the bottom panel, and then secure it at each of the eight screw locations using the included screws (B).
Before attaching the bottom panel, make sure that all wiring harnesses are connected.

Confirming functionality
After assembling all of the parts, make sure that there are no
parts remaining (except spare screws, washers and nuts) re-
view the entire assembly procedure in this manual to confirm
that the device has been correctly assembled.
If this device has been correctly assembled, follow the proce-
dures in “Basic Operation” (p. 15) to confirm its functionality.
If a problem is found in the assembly or functionality, follow the
troubleshooting procedure that’s described below to resolve the
problem.
Assembly troubleshooting
• Extra parts remaining
→ Therearemorescrews,nutsandwashersthanthenumberthan
needed to complete assembly.
→ Ifthereareanyotherpartsremaining,returntothestepwhere
those parts were used and correctly perform the assembly pro-
cedure.
• Parts missing
→ Ifanypartsaremissing,contactyourlocalKorgdistributor.
→ Ifany partsare damaged ormissing before beginningthe as-
sembly procedure, contact your local Korg distributor.
• Cannot be assembled. Parts are damaged.
→ ContactyourlocalKorgdistributor.
• After being assembled, the device is producing a strange
noise when tilted or shaken.
→ Theremaybealoosescreworsomeotherloosepartwithinthe
device. Open the bottom panel and check inside the device.
• The controls or jacks are loose.
→Removetheknob,andthenfirmlytightenthenut.
Troubleshooting
If any control does not function even though it has been set, a
cable may have not been correctly connected during assembly.
Check the appropriate cable according to the symptom.
• The device does not turn on.
→ Isthe9-pinredwireharnessor5-pinpurplewireharnessdis-
connected?
• No sound is produced from the headphones.
→ Isthe13-pinorangewireharnessor11-pinyellowwireharness
disconnected?
• No sound produced when the TRIG SW button is pressed.

• The device is turned on, but the MODULATION GENERA-
TOR LED does not blink.
→ Isthe15-pinbrownwireharnessdisconnected?
• The controls in the EXTERNAL SIGNAL PROCESSOR
section do not work.
→ Isthe12-pingreenwireharnessdisconnected?

1.SYNCVCO1→2ON/OFFswitch
This switch turns on/off syncing of VCO 2 with the VCO 1 fre-
quency. The sync effect is easier to hear when PITCH of VCO 2
is set higher than PITCH of VCO 1.
2.FMVCO1→2ON/OFFswitch
This switch turns on/off frequency modulation of the VCO 2
waveform with the waveform output of VCO 1.
When this switch is set to ON, the MG/T.EXT level of FRE-
QUENCY MODULATION is automatically set to the FM INTEN-
SITY level. In addition, the connection at the TOTAL jack is cut,
and the EG1/EXT level only affects VCO 2; it does not affect
VCO 1.
3.FILTERTYPEREV.1/REV.2switch
This switch selects between the earlier filter (REV.1) and the
later filter (REV.2).
4.VCO1PWMINjack
When the triangular wave output of the MODULATION GEN-
ERATOR (LFO) is patched to this jack, PWM will be applied to
the square wave of VCO 1. At that time, the PW level becomes
the INTENSITY of PWM.
5.EG2NORMALOUTjack
This is the normal EG 2 output jack that changes from 0V to
+5V.
If this output is patched to the CUTOFF FREQ jack of VOLTAGE
CONTROLLED HP FILTER or LP FILTER, the SUSTAIN LEVEL
knob of ENVELOPE GENERATOR 2 can create general mo-
tions.
6.TRIGIN(0V→High)jack
This is a standard specification trigger input jack typically used
by products from manufacturers other than Korg or Yamaha.
According to this standard, the trigger is applied when the volt-
age is increased from 0 V to a + voltage.
7.VCO1+2CVIN(V/Oct)jack
This is a standard specification CV input jack typically used by
products from manufacturers other than Korg or Yamaha. Ac-
cording to this standard, the pitch increases by 1 octave with
each 1 V that the CV voltage is increased.
8.TRIGSWOUTjack
This is an output jack that drops to GND when the TRIG SW
button (push-button), described below, is pressed. This is the
same as the MOMENTARY SWITCH jack on the original MS-
20.
9.TRIGSWbutton
Pressing this button performs the same operation as pressing
C3 in the keyboard. The C3 pitch and trigger on are applied si-
multaneously.
10.JUNCTIONjacks(3lines)
One mini-phone jack and three standard phone jacks are con-
nected in parallel. These provide three lines. They can be used
to split a single output signal between multiple input jacks or to
convert a mini-phone plug to a standard plug.
MS-20M Parts and Their Functions
MS-20M parts that are different from the original MS-20 are described below. Refer to the original Owner’s Manual for details on parts
that are the same as on the MS-20.

Basic Operation
1. Connections
Make sure each device is turned off before connecting any ad-
ditional equipment. If an operation is inadvertently performed,
the speaker system and other devices may be damaged or mal-
function.
1. Connecting the AC adapter
Connect the included AC adapter to the DC12V jack.
Only use the included AC adapter.
2. Connecting the output destination
Connect the powered monitor speaker or mixer to the SIG-
NAL OUT jack.
3. Connecting headphones
When using headphones, insert the headphone plug into
the PHONES jack.
4. Connecting guitars and microphones to the SIGNAL IN
jack
When using an external signal processor, connect the gui-
tar or microphone to the SIGNAL IN jack.
For details, refer to “Using the External Signal Processor
(ESP)” in the original Owner’s Manual.
2. Turning on the device
1. Turn the VOLUME knob clockwise.
2. After a click, the STANDBY ON LED lights up and the de-
vice is turned on.
TIP If the auto power off function is disabled, the LED blinks a few
times.
3. To turn off the device, turn the VOLUME knob counter-
clockwise until it clicks and the LED turns off.
TIP If the AC adapter is disconnected while the MS-20M Kit is turned
on or if the auto power off function has been enabled, the device
may have turned off without the VOLUME knob in the off posi-
tion. Before turning on the MS-20M Kit again, you’ll have to turn
the VOLUME knob fully counterclockwise to turn it off.
Auto power off function
The MS-20M is automatically turned off if none of the following
operations are performed for 4 hours.

TIP The auto power off function is enabled as a factory setting (de-
fault).
To disable the auto power off function
1. Check that no patch cords are connected to any jack.
2. Connect a patch cable to only the WHITE NOISE OUT
jack. Do not connect the other end of the cable to anything.
3. While holding down the TRIG SW button, turn on the MS-
20M.
When the function is disabled, the STANDBY ON LED
blinks a few times, then remains lit, and then the device
returns to normal operation.
TIP The setting for the auto power off function is saved, even when
the MS-20M is turned off.
TIP When changing the setting, do not turn off the MS-20M before
the STANDBY ON LED lights up. Otherwise, data may be cor-
rupted or the device may be damaged.
To enable the auto power off function again
Connect a patch cable to only the PINK NOISE OUT jack, and
then hold down the TRIG SW button while turning on the MS-
20M.
When the function is enabled, the STANDBY ON LED lights up,
without blinking, and then the device returns to normal opera-
tion.
3. Producing sounds
Basic settings
Referto“NormalSetting”(→p.83)andadjusttheknobs.
Producing a sound
Press the TRIG SW button to hear a tone.
To adjust the volume, turn the VOLUME knob.

Adjusting the knobs
Turn the CUTOFF FREQUENCY knob of the LOWPASS FIL-
TER counterclockwise to round off the sound. In addition, adjust
the timbre by using the OSCILLATOR 1 knob to change the
waveform to the triangle wave.
Filter setting
The VCFs (high-pass filter & low-pass filter) of the original MS-
20 are differentiated into the earlier and later filters, depending
on the production date.
Since the circuitry differs between these two filter types, they
have different sound quality characteristics, although their fre-
quency characteristics are similar.
The MS-20M is equipped with both types of filters for you to
select as desired.
The filter type is selected with the FILTER TYPE REV.1/REV.2
switch. When the switch is set to REV.1, the filter is the earlier
one. When set to REV.2, the filter is the later one.

4. Playing using the SQ-1
Connecting the SQ-1
Using the included ø3.5 mm patch cables (monaural mini plug)
and ø6.3 mm patch cables (monaural standard plug), connect
the SQ-1.
1. Connect the CV-A OUT jack of the SQ-1 to the mini-phone
JUNCTION jack of the MS-20M. Connect the standard
JUNCTION jack and the VCO 1+2 CV IN (V/Oct) jack in
the MS-20M.
2. Connect the CV-A GATE jack of the SQ-1 to the mini-
phone JUNCTION jack of the MS-20M. Connect the stan-
dard JUNCTION jack and the +5V~+15V TRIG IN jack in
the MS-20M.
TIP There are two TRIG IN jacks on the MS-20M Kit: V-Trig (voltage
trigger) and S-Trig (switch trigger). As the factory default of this
assembly, connect the SQ-1 to the V-Trig jack.
Specifying SQ-1 settings
Set the CV A RANGE on the SQ-1 to 5 V. For details on the
other settings, refer to the Owner’s Manual for the SQ-1.
Playing the SQ-1
Press the button on the SQ-1 to operate the sequencer.
For details on the various settings of the SQ-1, refer to its Own-
er’s Manual.
5. Creating sound
The procedures for creating sound using new functions not
available on the original MS-20 are described below. Sound cre-
ation basics will be described. Refer to the original Owner’s
Manual and the setting chart to create various sounds using the
new functions.
Syncing the oscillators
Refer to “Normal Setting” and adjust the knobs.
Set the SCALE knob of VCO 1 to 16’, and the SCALE knob of
VCO2to4’.SettheSYNCVCO1→VCO2ON/OFFswitchto
ON.
VCO 2 is synchronized with the frequency of VCO 1. Turn the
PITCH knob of VCO 2 to hear how the sound changes.
Using frequency modulation of an oscillator (VCO 2)
SettheFMVCO1→VCO2ON/OFFswitchtoON.
The frequency of VCO 2 is modulated with the frequency of
VCO 1. Adjust the modulation depth with the MG/T.EXT knob of
FREQUENCY MODULATION.
Turn the PITCH knob of VCO 2 to hear how the sound changes.
TIP IftheFMVCO1→VCO2ON/OFFswitchissettoONandthe
MG/T.EXT knob of FREQUENCY MODULATION is set to 0,
modulation can be applied to only VCO2 with EG1.
6. About MIDI
The MIDI IN connector and USB port on the MS-20M Kit are
some of the main differences between it and the original MS-20.
By connecting the MS-20M Kit to a computer, you can perform
with it while using a sequencer.
Connecting MIDI devices
In order to transmit/receive MIDI information, you can use com-
mercially available MIDI cables. Connect the MIDI connector of
the MS-20M Kit to the MIDI connector of the external MIDI de-
vice where information will be exchanged.
TIP The range of note numbers produced as Note On messages is
between 12 (C0) and 91 (G6). Sound is not produced with note
numbers outside of this range. Since the MS-20M produces
sounds while giving priority to high notes, if a note number of 92
or more is received, the message will become invalid, and
the sound being produced will stop. However, the sound being
produced will continue if a note number of 11 or less is received.
Setting the MIDI channel
1. Check that no patch cords are connected to any jack.
2. Connect a patch cable to the OUT jack of MVCA (MODU-
LATION VOLTAGE CONTROLLED AMPLIFIER). The oth-
er end is not connected to anything.
3. While holding down the TRIG SW button, turn on the MS-
20M.
4. While the STANDBY ON LED blinks, press the TRIG SW
button the number of times corresponding to the desired
channel setting. If the button is pressed 16 or more times,
the channel will be set to 16. STANDBY ON LED repeated-
ly blinks the number of times corresponding to the channel
setting. For example, the LED repeatedly blinks “* * -- (on,
on, off)” for MIDI channel 2 and “* * * -- (on, on, on, off)” for
channel 3.
This process can be repeated to change the setting as
needed. As the factory default, the setting is channel 1.
5. Check the blinking pattern of the STANDBY ON LED and,
if the setting is correct, disconnect the patch cable from the
MVCA OUT jack. The specified MIDI channel is saved, and
the MS-20M is automatically turned off.
6. When the MS-20M is turned on again, it will use the speci-
fied MIDI channel.
TIP The MIDI channel setting is saved, even when the MS-20M is
turned off.
TIP When changing the setting, do not turn off the MS-20M before
disconnecting the patch cable from the MVCA OUT jack. Other-
wise, data may be corrupted or the device may be damaged.
Connecting a computer
Use a USB cable to directly connect the MS-20M Kit to a com-
puter equipped with a USB port in order to receive MIDI mes-
sages in the same way as with the MIDI connectors.
The only MIDI messages that can be received at the USB port
of the MS-20M are note messages (Velocity is disabled) re-
ceived on the specified MIDI channel. In addition, the only MIDI
messages that can be transmitted are note messages (C3 and
Velocity at 64) transmitted when the TRIG SW button is pressed.
TIP When connecting via USB, the KORG USB-MIDI driver must be
installed. Download the KORG USB-MIDI driver from the Korg
Website(http://www.korg.com/),andtheninstallitaccordingto
the instructions in the document included with the driver.

nophonique en kit MS-20M Kit de Korg.
Pour garantir une utilisation sans problème de l’instrument,
veuillez lire attentivement ce manuel et manipuler le produit de
façon correcte. Veillez en outre à conserver ce manuel en lieu
sûr pour pouvoir le consulter à tout moment.
Le MS-20M est un synthétiseur monophonique qui recrée le
son du MS-20, commercialisé en 1978. Grâce à sa carte du
circuit d’une conception presque identique composée de pièces
similaires ayant des spécifications comparables, le MS-20M re-
créé le son du MS-20 d’origine lors de sa première commercia-
lisation. Les nouvelles prises PWM, EG 2 NORMAL OUT, CV IN
(V/Oct) et V-TRIG IN ont été ajoutées pour offrir plus de flexibi-
lité. Puisque le MS-20M n’est pas équipé d’un clavier ou d’une
molette de modulation, les fonctions de ces fonctionnalités ont
été supprimées.

Assemblage
Précautions avant l’assemblage
Éviter les blessures lors de la manipulation de pièces
Maniez les cartes des circuits avec soin pour éviter les bles-
sures qui pourraient être causées par accident par des pièces
protubérantes. Protégez vos mains en portant des gants de tra-
vail (en coton). De plus, veillez à laver vos mains avec du savon
lorsque vous avez terminé la procédure d’assemblage.
Aligner correctement les vis et les écrous avant le serrage
Le serrage des vis et des écrous en angle peut endommager
l’enfilage, ce qui peut les empêcher d’être complètement ser-
rés. Veillez à aligner les vis correctement avant de les serrer.
De plus, faites attention à ne pas serrer les vis en exerçant une
force excessive et à ne pas trop les serrer, car les pièces pour-
raient être endommagées.
Éviterlesblessuresetlarayuredespièceslorsdel’utilisa-
tiond’outils
Lorsque vous utilisez des outils pour serrer des vis et écrous,
faites attention à éviter les blessures, à vos doigts notamment.
De plus, maniez les outils avec soin pour éviter de rayer les
panneaux, etc.
Organisez un espace de travail suffisant pour effectuer la procé-
dure d’assemblage, et préparez des tapis de travail pour ne pas
rayer les pièces.
Éviter de perdre les vis et écrous
Maniez les vis et écrous fournis avec soin afin de ne pas les
perdre. De plus, n’utilisez pas d’autres vis et écrous que ceux
fournis pour l’assemblage, et n’utilisez pas les vis et écrous
fournis à d’autres fins.
ASTUCE Des vis et écrous supplémentaires sont fournis. Utilisez-
les en cas de besoin de remplacement.
Outils à préparer
Tournevis Phillips (+) : Utilisez le tournevis convenant à la
taille de la vis. Utiliser un tournevis de la mauvaise taille pourrait
endommager la vis ou vous empêcher de bien la serrer.
Clé polygonale (fournie) : Utilisez-la pour serrer les écrous
hexagonaux de 11 mm et 12 mm.
Mini-clé (fournie) : Utilisez-la pour serrer les écrous crénelés.
