Preface
This guide provides instructions to install the Nortel Secure Network Access
Switch 4050 (Nortel SNAS 4050).
The guide is intended for network component installers, systems administrators,
and switch administrators who
understand networks, Ethernet bridging, and Internet Protocol (IP) routing.
understand networking concepts, terminology, and topology.
prepare, install, and configure components on LAN and WAN networks.
understand and follow safety practices during hardware installation
procedures.
Before you begin
Ensure that the area where you install the Nortel Secure Network Access
Switch 4050 meets the following environmental requirements:
Ambient temperature between 32° F and 104° F (0° C and 40° C)
Relative humidity between 5% and 85% non-condensing
No nearby heat sources such as hot air vents or direct sunlight
No nearby sources of severe electromagnetic noise
No excessive dust
Adequate power source within six feet; one 15-Amp circuit required
At least 2 inches (5.08 cm) on each side of the switch unit for ventilation
Adequate space at the front and rear of the switch for access to cables
If you are installing a single Nortel Secure Network Access Switch 4050 on a
table or shelf, ensure that the surface can support at least 15 to 20 pounds (7 to 9
kilograms).

Text conventions
This guide uses the following text conventions:
angle brackets < > Indicate that you choose the text to enter based on the
description inside the brackets. Do not type the
brackets when entering the command.
Example: If the command syntax is
ping <ip_address>, you enter
ping 192.32.10.12
bold body text Indicates objects such as window names, dialog box
names, and icons, as well as user interface objects such
as buttons, tabs, and menu items.
bold Courier text Indicates command names, options, and text that you
must enter.
Example: Use the
dinfo command.
Example: Enter
show ip {alerts|routes}.
braces {} Indicate required elements in syntax descriptions where
there is more than one option. You must choose only
one of the options. Do not type the braces when
entering the command.
Example: If the command syntax is
show ip {alerts|routes}, you must enter either
show ip alerts or show ip routes, but not both.
brackets [ ] Indicate optional elements in syntax descriptions. Do
not type the brackets when entering the command.
Example: If the command syntax is
show ip interfaces [-alerts], you can enter
either
show ip interfaces or
show ip interfaces -alerts.
ellipsis points (. . . ) Indicate that you repeat the last element of the
command as needed.
Example: If the command syntax is
ethernet/2/1 [<parameter> <value>]... ,
you enter
ethernet/2/1 and as many
parameter-value pairs as needed.

Indicates command syntax and system output, for
example, prompts and system messages.
Example:
Set Trap Monitor Filters
separator > Shows menu paths.
Example: Protocols > IP identifies the IP command on
the Protocols menu.
vertical line
| Separates choices for command keywords and
arguments. Enter only one of the choices. Do not type
the vertical line when entering the command.
Example: If the command syntax is
show ip {alerts|routes}, you enter either
show ip alerts or show ip routes, but not
both.

Switch physical features
The Nortel Secure Network Access Switch 4050 front panel has buttons and
indicators for normal operation. The front panel bezel is removable for access to
the CD drive. The switch rear panel has port and power supply access.
Front panel
Figure 1 shows the Nortel Secure Network Access Switch 4050 front panel view.

Removing the front panel bezel
Remove the bezel for CD drive access. Replace the bezel when you are done.
To remove the bezel, follow these steps:
1 On the left front of the unit, locate and open the bezel release flap (Figure 2).
2 Grasp the bezel and slide the bezel to the right until disengaged.
3 Remove the bezel from the faceplate.

Attaching the front panel bezel
Attach the bezel for normal operation.
To attach the bezel, follow these steps:
1 Align the bezel on the faceplate slightly to the right of the front panel.
2 With the release flap open, engage the bezel onto the track and slide it to the
left until it locks into place (Figure 4).
3 Close the release flap.
