INTRODUCTION
The 12V DC Winch is ideal for light duty use on an ATV or UTV. The unit has a
50 ft steel cable with a 5/16 in. clevis hook with strap. The tethered remote
controls the winch and it can be set to free spool when needed. An automatic
load-holding brake keeps the load under tension.

WORK AREA
1. Operate in a safe work environment. Keep your work area clean, well-lit
and free of distractions. Place lights so you are not working in a shadow.

PERSONAL SAFETY
WARNING! Wear personal protective equipment approved by the Canadian
Standards Association (CSA) or American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
1. Always wear impact safety goggles that provide front and side protection
for the eyes. Eye protection equipment should comply with CSA Z94.3-07
or ANSI Z87.1 standards based on the type of work performed.
2. Wear gloves that provide protection based on the work materials or to
reduce the effects of tool vibration.
a. Do not wear gloves when operating a tool that can snag the
material and pull the hand into the tool.
3. Wear protective clothing designed for the work environment and tool.
4. Non-skid footwear is recommended to maintain footing and balance in
the work environment.
5. Wear steel toe footwear or steel toe caps to prevent a foot injury from
falling objects.
PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS
Control the tool, personal movement and the work environment to avoid
personal injury or damage to tool.
1. Do not operate any tool when tired or under the influence of drugs,
alcohol or medications.
2. Avoid wearing clothes or jewelry that can become entangled with the
moving parts of a tool. Keep long hair covered or bound.
3. Do not overreach when operating a tool. Proper footing and balance
enables better control in unexpected situations.
SPECIFIC SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

to stop the winch quickly in case of emergency.

4. Keep hands clear of the winch and steel cable when spooling the line in
or out. Hold the cable by the strap. Fingers caught in the hook may be
pulled into the mechanism and crushed or pinched.
5. Make sure the winch is fixed to a solid support structure that can
withstand the towing capacity.
6. Never fully extend the cable while under load.
7. Do not exceed the winch load capacity.
a. Do not use the winch if damaged or it was subjected to a dynamic
shock load. Have the winch inspected and repaired by a qualified
service technician.
8. Always use proper couplings when connecting the winch cable hook,
sling, eyebolt or other accessory to the load. Never connect the hook
back to the cable. This causes cable damage. Always use a sling or
chain of suitable strength.
9. Do not use inappropriate attachments to extend the length of the
winch cable.
10. Do not lift items vertically. The winch was designed for horizontal use
only.
11. Do not pull the steel cable around or over corners.
12. Stay well away from the winch, steel cable and load when under
tension. A cable that breaks under tension can whiplash and inflict
death or a serious injury.
a. Use a winch rope dampener to absorb the cable’s energy should it
break.
13. Secure the load after moving it with the winch. Do not rely on the
winch to hold a load in position for an extended period of time. Never
leave the load unattended.
14. Apply blocks to a vehicle while connecting and disconnecting the
winch cable.
15. Observe the spooling of the cable onto the drum. Side pulls can cause
the cable to pileup at one end of the drum. To correct uneven stacking,
spool out that section of cable and move it to the other end of the
drum and continue winching. Uneven spooling causing cable pileup can
interfere with the winch tie rods causing damage to the winch.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY
WARNING! Do not touch or handle a live tool with any part of your body that
is wet or damp. Wet skin reduces resistance to electrical current, increasing
the danger of a serious or fatal shock.
1. Disconnect tool from power source before cleaning, servicing, changing
parts/accessories or when not in use.
2. Protect yourself against electric shocks when working on electrical
equipment. Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces. There is an
increased chance of electrical shock if your body is grounded.
3. Do not alter any parts of the tool or accessories. All parts and
accessories are designed with built-in safety features that may be
compromised if altered.
4. Make certain the power source conforms to requirements of your
equipment (see Specifications).
5. When wiring an electrically driven device, follow all electrical and
safety codes, as well as the most recent Canadian Electrical Code (CE)
and Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS).
WARNING! All wiring should be performed by a qualified electrician.
BATTERY PRECAUTIONS
1. Lead-acid batteries generate oxygen and hydrogen. These gases can be
explosive. Keep batteries well ventilated. Remove any source of
ignition such as an open flame or a tool like a heater from the area.
Sparks may also ignite the gas.
2. Lead batteries contain sulfuric acid, also referred to as electrolyte or
battery acid. The acid is corrosive and can cause a skin burn if leaking
or splashed. The acid may also pose a threat if inhaled or ingested
accidentally. The acid can destroy normal clothing and injure the flesh
underneath. Wear splash-proof goggles and protective clothing when
handling a battery.
3. Batteries are heavy due to the weight of the lead and liquid contained
inside. A lead-acid battery could weigh upwards of 50-60 lbs. Use safe
lifting methods if moving the battery.
UNPACKING
WARNING! Do not operate the tool if any part is missing. Replace the
missing part before operating. Failure to do so could result in a malfunction
and personal injury.

Remove the parts and accessories from the packaging and inspect for damage.
Make sure that all items in the contents are included.

ASSEMBLY & INSTALLATION
Letter references in parenthesis (A) refer to the included Identification Key.
Dashed numbers in parenthesis (Fig. 1-1) refer to a specific point in an
illustration or image.
MOUNTING THE WINCH
Four 5/16 in. screws, lock washers, washers and nuts, SAE Grade 5 or higher,
are required to permanently mount the winch. This hardware is not included
with the winch.
1. Choose a location on the vehicle that can withstand the stress of the
maximum weight capacity (see Specifications). Install a steel
reinforcement plate or additional bracing to strength the location.
2. Make sure there is adequate room for the winch and a flat surface for
it to sit on. Verify the structure where the bolts will go contains no
hidden wiring or components. Relocate either the winch or the
wiring/components if there is overlap.
3. Mark the holes along the center using the winch’s base as a template.
Reach through the front or back opening to make the marks.
4. Drill each hole with a 5/16 in. drill bit to accommodate the bolts.
5. Position the winch to align the bolt holes on the bottom with the pre-
drilled holes.

6. Insert each bolt through the winch bottom and structure. Access the bolt
holes through the front or rear of the winch.
7. Slide a washer, lock washer and nut over each bolt end. Tighten the nuts.
INSTALL THE SOLENOID WIRING

solenoid near the
winch. Check
that the blue
(Fig. 2-5) and
yellow (Fig. 2-2)
wires will reach
from the solenoid
to the winch
through the
vehicle’s
structure.
2 Mark the holes
for mounting and drill pilot holes, making sure there are no wires or
components that may be damaged in behind the attachment point.
Attach with screws.
3. Connect the yellow wire (Fig. 2-2) to the positive connector (Fig. 2-3) on
the winch and to the rear solenoid connector on the right.
4. Connect the blue wire (Fig. 2-5) to the negative connector (Fig. 2-4) on
the winch to the rear solenoid connector on the left.
5. Connect the black wire (Fig. 2-1) to the front solenoid on the left, then
to the negative battery post.
6. Connect the red wire (Fig. 2-10) to the front solenoid on the right.
7. The tethered remote receiver has four wires.
a. Attach the yellow/green wire (Fig. 2-6)
to the small screw on the right.
b. Attach the red wire (Fig. 2-7) to the
front solenoid on the right.
c. Attach the black wire (Fig. 2-8) to the
small screw in the middle. Next connect a
wire from the small screw in the middle
to the front solenoid on the left.

d. Attach the brown wire (Fig. 2-9) to the small screw on the left.
e. Ensure all screws are tight.
8. Connect the red wire (Fig. 2-10) to the positive battery post.
9. You can reverse the
power in
and
power out
buttons on the tethered
remote by switching the yellow wire (Fig. 2-2) to the motor’s negative
terminal (Fig. 2-4) and the blue wire (Fig. 2-5) to the motors positive
terminal (Fig. 2-3). Disconnect the battery when making this change.
OPERATION
WARNING! Do not release the clutch while the winch is pulling a load. It may
cause the load to shift or move unexpectedly and the wire may snap with
the unexpected stress. Either may cause death or severe injury to the user
or bystanders.
BEFORE FIRST USE
The steel cable must be broken-in before using to pull a heavy load. The
break-in process will stretch the cable, ensure the individual wires are
seated and the wire compacted. Run the winch with a light load of
approximately 500 lb several times, before normal use.
Also use the weight when spooling the cable onto the winch. This will
provide the correct tension when spooling.
OPERATION
1. Make sure the operator can safely control the winch before performing
any functions with it and that they are familiar with all safety and
operating instructions.
2. Inspect the winch, steel cable and terminal tackle before each use. Replace
any damaged or frayed components before use.
3. Connect the winch to a 12VDC power supply
(see Wiring).
4. Turn the clutch hand wheel (C) clockwise a
quarter turn to disengage the brake (Fig. 3).
5. Pull out the cable by the hook strap (H) until
you have the desired length out.
a. Make sure there is always five turns of
cable on the winch drum.

hook, shackle, sling or chain capable of

withstanding the strain from winching the load. Make sure the
terminal tackle is secure to avoid an unintended disconnection while
winching.
a. Consult the vehicle owner’s manual for anchor points to connect
the steel cable’s terminal tackle.
7. Re-engage the clutch by twisting the clutch hand wheel counterclockwise
until it locks in place.
8. Check that the line is straight without kinks or twisted. Do not wrap
the steel cable around the load or wind it around corners or obstacles.
9. Place a dampening device on the steel cable if you have one available.
10. Uncap the remote receiver and plug the tethered remote into it.
11. Press and hold the remote control’s retract button (IN) until the slack is
removed from the steel cable.
12. Recheck the connections to ensure the terminal tackle will not shift.
a. Check the clutch is engaged. Do not adjust the clutch when the
winch is under load.
13. Press and hold the remote control’s retract button to pull the load
towards the winch. Release the button when the load is in the final
position.
a. Secure the load in place if necessary. Use wheel chocks for a
vehicle.
14. Press the release button (OUT) to remove tension on the steel cable.
Disengage and remove the hook or terminal tackle.
15. Hold the hook strap to keep some pressure on the winch and retract
the steel cable. Make sure each wire wrap fits snugly with the next
wrap. Stop when within a few feet. Disengage the clutch and spool the
final wraps by hand.
16. Disconnect from the power supply once the hook reaches the winch.
17. Disconnect and store the tethered remote control out of the way. Cap
the receiver.
WINCHING LIMITATIONS
There are several limitations that can affect the time duration, power
consumption and maximum weight a winch can move. A snatch block will
improve the winch’s performance. Make sure to follow all safety and
operation instructions from the snatch block’s manufacturer.

POWER
The maximum load the winch can
pull is diminished with each
additional layer of steel cable
around the winch’s drum. Table 1
shows the maximum amount of
weight it can pull and the length of
cable remaining on the drum.
Whenever possible, remove as much
steel cable off the winch to pull with
the maximum power. Keep five wraps of steel cable on the drum at all times
to prevent the steel cable from slipping off.
Use a snatch block to move a heavier load that is close to the winch. This will
double the amount of line outside the winch and increase the winch’s pulling
power at close range.
LINE SPEED
The heavier the load, the longer it
will take the winch to move the load
to the desired location. Consult
Table 2 to determine how fast the
line will be drawn into the winch.
The winch requires more amps to
move a heavier load. Consult Table 2
to determine the amperage
consumption based on the load’s
weight. A snatch block will halve the
line speed when pulling the load.
POWER CONSUMPTION
A snatch block increases a winch’s pulling power without an increase in
amperage. Using a snatch block can halve the power required.
OPERATION ANGLES
The winch is the most efficient when towing in a straight line. However,
sometimes that is not possible. Change the angle using the fairlead or a pulley
when necessary.
The winch can retrieve or release the steel cable up to a:
15 degree vertical angle above or below the centerline.
45 degree horizonal angle to either side of the centerline.

Use a pulley with a suitably strong attachment point if the required angle
exceeds either (or both) of these limitations.
CARE & MAINTENANCE
1. Maintain the tool with care. A tool in good condition is efficient, easier
to control and will have fewer problems.
2. Inspect the tool components periodically. Repair or replace damaged or
worn components. Only use identical replacement parts when servicing.
3. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories.
4. Only use accessories intended for use with this tool.
5. Keep the tool clean, dry and free from oil/grease at all times.
6. Maintain the tool’s labels and name plates. These carry important
information. If unreadable or missing, contact Princess Auto Ltd. for
replacements.
WARNING! Only qualified service personnel should repair the tool. An
improperly repaired tool may present a hazard to the user and/or others.
CLEANING
Clean the external surfaces with cloth after each use.
LUBRICATION
The winch is permanently lubricated and does not require additional
lubrication. The exception is if the winch is submerged in water. Open the
housing, dry and have a qualified technician re-lubricate the winch.
Lubricate the steel cable with a light oil from time to time to prevent
corrosion.
DISPOSAL
Recycle a tool damaged beyond repair at the appropriate facility.
Contact your local municipality for a list of disposal facilities or by-laws for
electronic devices, batteries, oil or other toxic liquids.
IMPORTANT! DO NOT pollute the environment by allowing uncontrolled
discharge of waste oil.
TROUBLESHOOTING
Visit a Princess Auto Ltd. location for a solution if the tool does not function
properly or parts are missing. If unable to do so, have a qualified technician
service the tool.

INTRODUCTION
Le treuil de 12 V c.c., est idéal pour les utilisations légères sur un VTT ou un
VUT. L’unité comporte un câble en acier de 50 pi avec un crochet à chape
de 5/16 po muni d’une sangle. Une télécommande avec câble de retenue
commande le treuil et il peut être réglé à enroulement libre au besoin. Un
frein de maintien de charge automatique garde la charge sous tension.

ÉQUIPEMENT DE PROTECTION PERSONNELLE
1. Portez toujours des lunettes antiprojections qui offrent une protection
frontale et latérale pour les yeux. L'équipement de protection des yeux
devrait être conforme à la norme CSA Z94.3-07 ou ANSI Z87.1 fonction
du type de travail effectué.
2. Portez des gants qui protègent en fonction des matériaux de travail et
pour réduire les effets des vibrations de l'outil.
a. Ne portez pas de gants lorsque vous utilisez un outil dans lequel
le tissu pourrait demeurer coincé, entraînant ainsi la main.
3. Portez des vêtements de protection conçus pour l'environnement de
travail et pour l'outil.
4. Les chaussures antidérapantes sont recommandées pour maintenir la
stabilité et l'équilibre au sein de l'environnement de travail.
5. Portez des chaussures à embout d'acier ou à coquilles d'acier pour
éviter les blessures aux pieds dues à la chute d'objets.
PRÉCAUTIONS PERSONNELLES
Gardez le contrôle de l'outil, de vos mouvements et de l'environnement de
travail pour éviter les blessures ou le bris de l'outil.
1. N'utilisez pas l'outil si vous êtes fatigué ou sous l'effet de drogues,
d'alcool ou de médicaments.

2. Évitez de porter des vêtements ou des bijoux pouvant se prendre dans les
pièces mobiles d'un outil. Gardez les cheveux longs recouverts ou attachés.
3. N'utilisez pas l'outil si vous devez étirer les bras pour vous en servir.
Une stabilité et un équilibre appropriés sont nécessaires afin d'avoir un
meilleur contrôle en cas de situations inattendues.
CONSIGNES DE SÉCURITÉ SPÉCIFIQUES
AVERTISSEMENT! Ne permettez PAS au confort ou à votre familiarisation
avec l'outil (obtenus après un emploi répété) de se substituer à une
adhésion stricte aux règles de sécurité de l'outil. Si vous utilisez cet outil de
façon dangereuse ou incorrecte, vous pouvez subir des blessures
corporelles graves.
1. Utilisez le bon outil pour la tâche à effectuer. Cet outil a été conçu pour
une utilisation spécifique. Évitez de modifier ou d'altérer cet outil ou de
l'utiliser à une fin autre que celle pour laquelle il a été conçu.
2. N’utilisez pas l’outil si des pièces présentent des dommages ou sont
déplacées. Réparez ou remplacez les pièces.
3. Tous les utilisateurs doivent comprendre le fonctionnement de toutes
les commandes et savoir comment arrêter le treuil rapidement en cas
d'urgence.
4. Gardez vos mains loin du treuil et du câble en acier en déroulant ou en
rembobinant le câble. Tenez le câble par la sangle. Des doigts coincés
dans le crochet peuvent être tirés dans le mécanisme et écrasés ou
pincés.
5. Assurez-vous que le treuil est fixé sur une structure de montage solide
pouvant supporter la capacité de remorquage.
6. N’allongez jamais le câble complètement lorsqu’il est sous charge.
7. Ne dépassez pas la capacité de charge nominale du treuil.
a. N’utilisez pas le treuil s’il est endommagé ou s’il a subi une charge
de choc dynamique. Faites vérifier et réparer le treuil par un
technicien de service qualifié.
8. Utilisez toujours des fixations appropriées lorsque vous reliez à la
charge le crochet de câble, l’élingue, le boulon à œil ou tout autre
accessoire du treuil. Ne replacez jamais le crochet sur le câble. Cela a
pour effet d’endommager les câbles. Utilisez toujours une élingue ou
une chaîne de la résistance prescrite.
