INTRODUCTION

The Air Needle Scaler is good for Ideal for removing paint, rust, dirt and

weld slag from surfaces.

SAFETY

WARNING! Read and understand all instructions before using this tool. The

operator must follow basic precautions to reduce the risk of personal injury

and/or damage to the equipment.

Keep this manual for safety warnings, precautions, operating or inspection

and maintenance instructions.

WORK AREA

1. Operate in a safe work environment. Keep your work area clean, well-lit

and free of distractions. Place lights so you are not working in a shadow.

2. Keep anyone not wearing the appropriate safety equipment away from

the work area.

3. Store unused tools properly in a safe and dry location to prevent rust

or damage. Lock tools away and keep out of the reach of children.

4. Do not install or use in the presence of flammable gases, dust or

liquids.

PERSONAL SAFETY

WARNING! Wear personal protective equipment approved by the Canadian

Standards Association (CSA) or American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

1. Always wear impact safety goggles that provide front and side protection

for the eyes. Eye protection equipment should comply with CSA Z94.3-07

or ANSI Z87.1 standards based on the type of work performed.

2. The tool may contain high pressure. Use safety glasses and gloves for

protection during operation. Keep hands clear of the exposed rubber

portions of the hose.

3. Wear the appropriate type of full-face shield in addition to safety googles,

as the work can create chips, abrasive or particulate matter.

4. Wear gloves that provide protection based on the work materials or to

reduce the effects of tool vibration.

5. Wear protective clothing designed for the work environment and tool.

6. Non-skid footwear is recommended to maintain footing and balance in

the work environment.

7. Wear steel toe footwear or steel toe caps to prevent a foot injury from

falling objects.

8. Wear a NIOSH approved respirator when working on materials that

produce hazardous fumes, dust or particulate matter.

9. This tool can cause hearing damage. Wear hearing protection gear with an

appropriate Noise Reduction Rating to withstand the decibel levels.

PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS

Control the tool, personal movement and the work environment to avoid

personal injury or damage to the tool.

1. Do not operate any tool when tired or under the influence of drugs,

alcohol or medications.

2. Avoid wearing clothes or jewelry that can become entangled with the

moving parts of a tool. Keep long hair covered or bound.

3. Do not overreach when operating the tool. Proper footing and balance

enables better control in unexpected situations.

4. Securely hold this tool using both hands. Using a tool with only one

hand can result in loss of control.

5. Keep your fingers away from the trigger/switch while carrying the tool,

attaching an air hose or an accessory. Lock the trigger/switch safety if

available.

6. Avoid unintentional starts. Be sure that the regulator/throttle switch is

in the neutral or OFF position when not in use and before connecting it

to any air source.

7. Never point the air stream or tool at any point of your body, other people

or animals. Debris and dust ejected at high speed can cause an injury.

8. Serious injury or death may occur from inhaling compressed air. The air

stream may contain carbon monoxide, toxic vapors or solid particles.

Never inhale compressed air directly from the pump or air tool.

1. Use the correct tool for the job. This tool was designed for a specific

function. Do not modify or alter this tool or use it for an unintended

purpose.

2. Do not use the tool if any parts are damaged, broken or misplaced.

Repair or replace the parts.

3. Before using this tool, make sure you know the work area and material

you are working on. Make sure you do not accidentally puncture pipes,

pressurized containers or electrical cables.

4. Keep hands and other body parts away from the needles to avoid injury.

5. Only use with accessories rated to handle the forces exerted by this

tool during operation. Accessories not designed for the forces

generated may break and forcefully launch pieces.

6. The needles will become hot while scraping. Allow the needles to

completely cool before touching.

7. Replace needles that are worn or blunt at the cutting edge or shank. A

damaged needle may damage the air needle scraper, reduce efficiency

and increase vibration. A needle that breaks during use can cause an

injury.

8. Do not cover the air vents.

AIR TOOL PRECAUTIONS

1. Use only clean and dry compressed air as a power source. Contaminated

or moist air will gradually damage the tool.

2. Install an in-line shutoff valve or regulator to allow immediate control over

the air supply in an emergency, even if a hose is ruptured.

3. Discontinue tool use if it does not work properly or air is leaking. Tag

or mark the tool as ‘defective’ or ‘out of service’ until repaired.

4. Check the manufacturer’s maximum pressure rating for air tools and

accessories. Compressor outlet pressure must be regulated to never

exceed the maximum pressure rating of the tool (see Specifications).

Exceeding the maximum PSI rating can create a bursting hazard,

causing injury and property damage.

5. Attach all accessories properly to the tool before connecting the air

supply. A loose accessory may detach or break during operation.

6. Never use oxygen, combustible gas or any other bottled gas as a

power source. Any power source other than an air compressor could

cause an explosion and serious personal injury.

7. Turn OFF the valve and discharge any remaining air pressure after each

use or before adjusting the tool.

8. Do not leave the air tool unattended with its compressed air supply on.

Turn off the compressed air supply and bleed the air tool of any

remaining compressed air before leaving the air tool unattended.

9. Serious injury may occur from loose debris being propelled at high speeds

from the compressed air stream. Always wear OSHA approved safety glasses

to protect the eyes during operation of the air compressor.

10. Always turn off the air compressor and drain tank pressure completely

before attempting maintenance or attaching air tools. Release pressure

slowly from the system.

POWER TOOL PRECAUTIONS

1. Do not use any power tool with a malfunctioning power switch or control.

A power tool that fails to respond to the controls is dangerous and can

cause an injury. A qualified technician must repair and verify the power

tool is operating correctly, before it can be used.

2. Avoid unintentional starts. Ensure the switch is off when connecting to

the power source.

3. Disconnect the power source before installing or servicing the tool.

4. Never force the tool. Excessive pressure could break the tool, resulting

in damage to your workpiece or serious personal injury. Excessive

pressure is the cause if your tool runs smoothly under no load, but

roughly under load.

5. Only use an accessory that exceeds the Blows Per Minute rating (see

Specifications). Ensure the accessory is tightly installed.

6. Before using the tool on a workpiece, test the tool by running it at the

highest no load speed for at least 30 seconds in a safe position. Stop

immediately if there is any abnormal vibration or wobbling. Check the

tool to determine the cause.

7. Do not place the tool down until the tool’s accessory has stopped moving.

The accessory may catch the surface of work material and wrench itself

free, causing injury to the user or others in the work area.

8. Hold the tool by the insulated gripping surfaces when performing an

operation where the tool may contact hidden electrical wiring. The

tool’s exposed metal surfaces may convey a shock to the operator from

a ‘live’ wire.

AIR HOSE PRECAUTIONS

1. Inspect the tool's air hose for cracks, fraying or other faults before

each use. Discontinue use if the air hose is damaged or hissing is heard

from the air hose or couplers. Replace the defective air hose.

2. Do not allow people, mobile equipment or vehicles to pass over the

unprotected air hose. Position the air hose away from high traffic

areas, in a reinforced conduit or place planks on both sides of the air

hose to create a protective trench.

3. Prevent damage to the air hose by observing the following:

a. Never carry the tool by the air hose.

b. Keep the air hose behind the tool and out of the tool's work path.

c. Keep the air hose away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts.

d. Do not wrap the air hose around the tool as sharp edges may

pierce or crack the air hose. Gently coil the hose and either hang

on a hook or fasten with a device to keep hose together when

storing.

4. A damaged or disconnected air hose under pressure may whip around

and inflict personal injury or damage the work area. Secure the

compressor's air hose to a fixed or permanent structure with clamps or

cable ties.

VIBRATION PRECAUTIONS

1. This tool vibrates during use. Repeated or long-term exposure to

vibration may cause temporary or permanent physical injury. Take

frequent breaks when using the tool.

2. If you feel any medical symptoms related to vibrations (such as

tingling, numbness, and white or blue fingers), seek medical attention

as soon as possible.

3. Wear suitable gloves to reduce the effects of vibration.

4. DO NOT use this tool before consulting a physician if one of the

following applies:

a. Pregnant

b. Impaired blood circulation

to the hands

c. Past hand injuries

d. Nervous system disorders

e. Diabetes

f. Raynaud's Disease

UNPACKING

WARNING! Do not operate the tool if any part is missing. Replace the

missing part before operating. Failure to do so could result in a malfunction

and personal injury.

Remove the parts and accessories from the packaging and inspect for damage.

Make sure that all items in the contents are included.

ASSEMBLY & INSTALLATION

Numbered references in parenthesis (#1) refer to the included Parts List.

The air needle scaler is preassembled.

INSTALL AIR COUPLER PLUG

Prepare a standard 1/4 in. NPT coupler plug (sold separately) for use with

your tool.

1. Wrap the external threads of the coupler plug with sealant tape.

a. Wrap tape in a clockwise direction so it will not unravel.

b. Do not tape all the threads. Leave several leading threads

unwrapped for easier alignment.

2. Screw the coupler plug into the tool's air inlet and tighten with a

wrench until snug.

3. Run the compressor at a low volume and check the connection for air

leaks. Do not use the tool until all air leaks are repaired or the faulty

component is replaced.

IMPORTANT! Vibration may cause failure if a quick coupler is connected directly

to the air tool. To overcome this, connect a leader hose to the tool. A quick

coupler may then be used to connect the leader hose to the air line hose.

OPERATION

1. Ensure the regulator switch is in the neutral or OFF position.

2. Connect the tool to the air source.

3. Turn the compressor regulator to the desired air pressure (see

Specifications).

4. Grip the tool with both hands. Place one hand on the needle housing

(#11) and the other hand on the tool body.

5. Press the trigger lever (#16) to operate. Make sure the needles are not

touching the workpiece surface until the tool is running.

6. Place the vibrating needles on the work surface. Move the needle

scaler around in the area from which you wish to remove the material.

7. Apply light pressure on the tool while in use. Heavy pressure can

damage the work surface.

8. Do not hold the needle scaler in any one area of the work surface for

more than a few seconds. Longer intervals could damage the surface.

9. If the needle scaler will not remove the material from the surface after

a few brief attempts, do not continue. Use another method to remove

the material.

10. When finished with the tool, turn off the air compressor, disconnect

the air hose and discharge any residual air remaining in the tool.

11. Clean the tool of accumulated dust or debris before storage.

PRESSURE DROP

Apply the air consumption and pressure rate numbers to the tool’s air inlet, not

the compressor’s outlet. Calculate the pressure drop for your air supply set-up

and increase the compressor outlet pressure to compensate. Make sure you do

not exceed the maximum pressure for any part of your air supply system.

Installing a pressure gauge at the tool inlet is the best way to measure the

air pressure and adjust the compressor’s output.

CARE & MAINTENANCE

1. Maintain the tool with care. A tool in good condition is efficient, easier

to control and will have fewer problems.

2. Inspect the tool fittings, alignment, hoses and power supply cord

periodically. Have damaged or worn components repaired or replaced

by an authorized technician. Only use identical replacement parts

when servicing.

3. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories.

4. Only use accessories intended for use with this tool.

5. Keep the tool clean, dry and free from oil/grease at all times.

6. Maintain the tool’s labels and name plates. These carry important

information. If unreadable or missing, contact Princess Auto Ltd. for

replacements.

WARNING! Only qualified service personnel should repair the tool. An

improperly repaired tool may present a hazard to the user and/or others.

AIR TOOL LUBRICATION

NOTICE! Only use air tool oil to lubricate the tool. Other lubricants are not

suitable and will damage the tool or cause a malfunction during use.

NOTICE! Never use a penetrating oil to lubricate an air tool. Penetrating oil

acts as a solvent that will dissolve the tool’s grease packing and may

damage the o-rings, causing the tool to seize or malfunction.

1. All air tools have an internal coating of grease to prevent corrosion

during shipping and storage. Remove this grease by adding a generous

amount of air tool oil in the air inlet and then run the tool under no

load until the exhaust is clear.

2. Manually add a drop or two of air tool oil into the tool’s male coupler plug

before each use and after every hour of continuous use. The tool will not

work properly without lubrication and parts will wear prematurely.

3. Avoid adding too much air tool oil as this can cause premature power

loss and eventual tool failure. A qualified technician will need to take

the tool apart and clean out the excess oil.

4. Apply a generous amount of air tool oil to the tool before storing it for

an extended period of time (overnight, weekend, etc.). Run the tool for

approximately 30 seconds to ensure the oil is evenly distributed

throughout the tool. Store it in a clean and dry location.

REPLACING THE NEEDLES

Replace any needles that are worn down, chipped or damaged.

1. Remove the needle housing (#11) by rotating it counterclockwise.

2. Remove the needle seat (#10) and needles (#9) from the needle

housing.

3. Pull the needles from the needle seat.

4. Insert replacement needles into the vacant holes in the needle seat.

5. Place the needle assembly back into the needle housing.

6. Remount the needle housing to the tool by rotating clockwise. Make

sure that the needle housing is installed tight and secure.

WARNING! Only use replacement needles that have an BPM rating equal to

or greater than the tool (see Specifications). A subpar needle can break and

shatter and may cause an injury to yourself or a bystander.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Visit a Princess Auto Ltd. location for a solution if the tool does not function

properly or parts are missing. If unable to do so, have a qualified technician

service the tool.

5. Gardez vos doigts à bonne distance de la gâchette/commutateur lors

du transport de l’outil ou du branchement d’un tuyau à air ou d’un

accessoire. Engagez le verrou de gâchette/interrupteur, le cas échéant.

6. Évitez les mises en marche involontaires. Assurez-vous que le

régulateur/commutateur est en position neutre ou OFF (arrêt) lorsque

l’outil n’est pas utilisé et avant de le brancher à une source d’air.

7. Ne dirigez jamais le jet d’air ou les outils vers votre corps, d’autres

individus ou des animaux. Les débris et la poussière projetés à grande

vitesse peuvent causer des blessures.

8. Des blessures graves ou même la mort peuvent survenir en cas

d’inhalation de l’air comprimé. Le jet d’air peut contenir du monoxyde

de carbone, des vapeurs toxiques ou des particules solides. N’inhalez

jamais l’air comprimé provenant directement de la pompe ou d’un outil

pneumatique.

CONSIGNES DE SÉCURITÉ SPÉCIFIQUES

AVERTISSEMENT ! Ne permettez PAS au confort ou à votre familiarisation

avec l'outil (obtenus après un emploi répété) de se substituer à une

adhésion stricte aux règles de sécurité de l'outil. Si vous utilisez cet outil de

façon dangereuse ou incorrecte, vous pouvez subir des blessures

corporelles graves.

1. Utilisez le bon outil pour la tâche à effectuer. Cet outil a été conçu pour

une utilisation spécifique. Évitez de modifier ou d'altérer cet outil ou de

l'utiliser à une fin autre que celle pour laquelle il a été conçu.

2. N’utilisez pas l’outil si des pièces présentent des dommages ou sont

déplacées. Réparez ou remplacez les pièces.

3. Avant d’utiliser cet outil, assurez-vous de bien connaître l’aire de travail et

le matériau sur lequel vous allez travailler. Veillez à ne pas percer par

mégarde des tuyaux, des récipients pressurisés ni des câbles électriques.

4. Gardez les mains et les autres parties du corps loin des aiguilles afin de

prévenir les blessures.

5. N’utilisez que des accessoires certifiés pour supporter les forces

exercées par cet outil durant son fonctionnement. D’autres accessoires

non conçus pour résister aux forces produites risquent de se briser et

de voler en éclats avec force.

6. Pendant le grattage, les aiguilles deviendront chaudes. Laissez refroidir

complètement les aiguilles avant de les toucher.

7. Remplacez les aiguilles qui sont usées ou émoussées au niveau de l’arête

tranchante ou de la tige. Une aiguille endommagée pourrait briser le

grattoir à aiguille, réduire l’efficacité et augmenter les vibrations. Une

aiguille qui se brise durant l’utilisation peut causer une blessure.

8. Ne recouvrez pas les orifices d'aération.

PRÉCAUTIONS RELATIVES AUX OUTILS PNEUMATIQUES

1. Utilisez uniquement un air comprimé propre et sec comme source

d’énergie. L’air contaminé ou humide endommagera progressivement

l’outil.

2. Installez une soupape d'arrêt ou un régulateur sur la conduite afin de

permettre une commande immédiate de l'alimentation en air, en cas

d'urgence, même si un tuyau se fend.

3. Arrêtez d’utiliser l’outil s’il ne fonctionne pas correctement ou s’il présente

des fuites d’air. Attachez une étiquette sur l’outil indiquant qu’il est «

défectueux » ou qu’il est « hors service », jusqu’à ce qu’il soit réparé.

4. Consultez la pression nominale maximale du fabricant en ce qui concerne

les outils pneumatiques et accessoires. La pression de sortie du

compresseur doit être réglée de façon à ne jamais dépasser la pression

nominale maximale de l'outil (consultez Spécifications). Si on dépasse la

pression nominale maximale, il pourrait en résulter un risque d’explosion

capable d’entraîner des blessures et des dommages aux biens.

5. Avant de relier l’alimentation en air, fixez correctement tous les

accessoires sur l’outil. Un accessoire mal attaché pourrait se détacher

et se briser durant l’utilisation.

6. N'utilisez jamais d'oxygène, de gaz combustible ou tout autre gaz

embouteillé en tant que source d'énergie. Une source d'énergie autre

qu'un compresseur d'air pourrait causer une explosion entraînant ainsi

des blessures corporelles graves.

7. Fermez la soupape et évacuez toute la pression d’air restante après

chaque utilisation ou avant d’ajuster l’outil.

8. Ne laissez pas l’outil d'air sans surveillance alors que la source d'air

comprimé est en fonction. Fermez la source d'air comprimé et purgez l’outil

d'air de tout air comprimé restant avant de laisser celui-ci sans surveillance.

9. Des blessures graves peuvent se produire si des débris sont propulsés

à haute vitesse dans le jet d’air du compresseur. Portez toujours des

lunettes de sécurité approuvés OSHA afin de vous protéger les yeux

lorsque vous utilisez le compresseur d’air.

10. Arrêtez toujours le compresseur d’air et évacuez complètement la pression

du réservoir avant de tenter de procéder à l’entretien ou de fixer des outils

pneumatiques. Évacuez doucement la pression du système.

PRÉCAUTIONS RELATIVES AUX OUTILS ÉLECTRIQUES

1. N’utilisez pas d’outil électrique muni d’un interrupteur d’alimentation

ou d’une commande qui fait défaut. Un outil électrique qui ne réagit

pas aux commandes est dangereux et pourrait provoquer des blessures

graves. Un technicien qualifié doit réparer l’outil électrique et vérifier

s’il fonctionne correctement

2. Évitez le démarrage non intentionnel. Assurez-vous que le commutateur

se trouve en position d'arrêt avant de brancher l'appareil à la source

d'énergie.

3. Débranchez l'appareil de la source d'énergie avant de procéder à son

installation ou à son entretien.

4. Ne forcez jamais l’outil. Une pression excessive pourrait briser l’outil,

entraînant ainsi des dommages au niveau de la pièce à travailler ou

causant des blessures corporelles graves. Si votre outil fonctionne

correctement lorsqu’il n’y a aucune charge, mais qu’il présente un

fonctionnement difficile sous charge, cela signifie qu’une pression

excessive est exercée.

5. Utilisez uniquement un accessoire qui excède la valeur nominale de

coups par minute (consultez Spécifications). Assurez-vous aussi que

l’accessoire est solidement installé.

6. Avant d’utiliser l’outil sur une pièce, assurez-vous d’effectuer une

vérification de fonctionnement de l’outil au régime à vide le plus élevé

pendant au moins 30 secondes dans une position sans danger. Arrêtez

immédiatement en présence d'une vibration anormale ou d'une

oscillation. Examinez bien l’outil pour déterminer la cause du problème.

7. Ne déposez pas l’outil jusqu’à ce que l’accessoire ait complètement

cessé de tourner. L’accessoire peut toucher la surface de la pièce et se

libérer, entraînant ainsi des blessures pour l’utilisateur et les gens qui

se trouvent dans l’aire de travail.

8 Tenez les outils par les surfaces de prise isolées lors d’une utilisation

dans laquelle l’outil de coupe risque de toucher un câble électrique

dissimulé. Les surfaces métalliques exposées de l’outil peuvent

provoquer un choc chez l’opérateur en raison d’un fil « sous tension ».

PRÉCAUTIONS RELATIVES AUX TUYAUX À AIR

1. Inspectez le tuyau d’air de l'outil pour déceler des fissures, des

effilochures et tout autre défaut avant chaque utilisation. Arrêtez

l'utilisation si le tuyau d’air est endommagée ou si un sifflement se fait

entendre provenant du tuyau à air. Remplacez le tuyau d’air ou le

composant défectueux.

2. Veillez à ce que personne, ni aucun matériel mobile ou des véhicules

n'écrasent le tuyau d’air non protégée. Placez le tuyau d’air à l'écart des

zones de circulation intense, soit à l'intérieur d'un conduit renforcé ou

placez des planches des deux côtés de le tuyau d’air afin de créer un

couloir protecteur.
