The Braun ThermoScan® Ear thermometer has been carefully developed for accurate, safe, and fast

temperature measurements in the ear.

The shape of the thermometer probe prevents it from being inserted too far into the ear canal,

which can hurt the eardrum.

However, as with any thermometer, proper technique is critical to obtaining accurate temperatures.

Therefore, read the instructions carefully and thoroughly.

Indications for use / Intended use

The Braun Thermoscan® IRT6000 Series infrared ear thermometers are indicated for the intermittent

measurement of human body temperature by consumers of all ages in a home use environment.

The hygienic lens lter is used as a sanitary barrier between the thermometer and the ear canal.

Warnings and Precautions

Please consult your physician if you see symptoms such as unexplained irritability, vomiting, diarrhea,

dehydration, changes in appetite or activity, seizure, muscle pain, shivering, sti neck, pain when urinating,

etc. in spite of any color of the background light or absence of fever.

Please consult your physician if the thermometer shows fever (yellow or red background lights).

The operating ambient temperature range for this thermometer is 50 – 104 °F (10 – 40 °C).

DO NOT expose the thermometer to temperature extremes (below –13 °F / –25 °C or over 131 °F / 55 °C)

or excessive humidity (15 - 95 % RH).

This thermometer must only be used with genuine Braun ThermoScan Hygienic lens lters (LF 40).

To avoid inaccurate measurements ALWAYS use this thermometer with a new, clean lens lter attached.

If the thermometer is accidentally used without a hygienic lens lter attached, clean the lens

(see «Care and cleaning» section).

Keep hygienic lens lter out of reach of children.

This thermometer is intended for household use only.

Use of this thermometer is not intended as a substitute for consultation with your physician.

This thermometer is not intended for pre-term babies or small-for-gestational age newborn babies (birth to

4 weeks of age). Pre-term is dened as babies born before 37 weeks of gestation. Small-for-gestational-age

is dened as a newborn baby, born at 37 weeks or later, with a weight below the 10th percentile for newborn

babies of the same gestational age.

Nursing mothers should not take a temperature measurement on themselves or have their temperature

measured by another individual while or immediately after nursing a baby, as nursing can aect body

temperature.

This thermometer is not intended to interpret hypothermic temperatures. If the device displays a

temperature of 97.5°F (36.4°C) or less with an LED backlight color of green or white, and the individual is

exhibiting atypical symptoms or behaviors, contact your doctor or health care professional.

DO NOT allow children to take their temperature unattended.

DO NOT modify this equipment without authorization of the manufacturer.

People who are on antibiotics, analgesics, or antipyretics should not be assessed solely on temperature

readings to determine the severity of their illness.

Temperature elevation may signal a serious illness, especially in neonates and infants, or in adults who are

elderly, frail, or have a weakened immune system. Please seek professional advice immediately when there is

a temperature elevation and if you are taking temperature on:

• Neonates and infants under 3 months (Consult your physician immediately if the temperature exceeds

99.4 °F or 37.4 °C).

• Individuals having diabetes mellitus or a weakened immune system (e.g., HIV positive, cancer

chemotherapy, chronic immunosuppressant treatment, splenectomy).

• Individuals who are bedridden (e.g., paraplegia, quadriplegia, stroke, chronic illness, surgical recovery,

nursing home patient, stroke, chronic illness, recovering from surgery).

• A transplant recipient (e.g., liver, heart, lung, kidney).

This thermometer contains small parts that can be swallowed or produce a choking hazard to children.

Keep out of reach of children.

Body temperature

Normal body temperature is a range. It varies by site of measurement, and it tends to decrease

with age. It also varies from person to person and uctuates throughout the day. Therefore, it is

important to determine normal temperature ranges. This is easily done using Braun ThermoScan.

Practice taking temperatures on yourself and healthy family members to determine the normal

temperature range.

Note: When consulting your physician, communicate that the ThermoScan temperature is a

temperature measured in the ear and if possible, note the individual’s normal ThermoScan

temperature range as additional reference.

Why measure in the ear?

The goal of thermometry is to measure core body temperature1, which is the temperature

of the vital organs. Ear temperatures accurately reect core body temperature,2 since the

eardrum shares blood supply with the temperature control center in the brain,3 the

hypothalamus. Therefore, changes in body temperature are reected sooner in the ear than

at other sites. Axillary temperatures measure skin temperature and may not be a reliable

indicator of core body temperature. Oral temperatures are inuenced by drinking, eating

and mouth breathing. Rectal temperatures often lag behind changes in core body

temperature and there is a risk of cross-contamination.

Age Precision™ Technology

Clinical research shows the denition of fever changes as newborns grow into children and

children grow into adults.4

Select the appropriate age setting, take a temperature, and the display will glow green, yellow,

or red to indicate whether the temperature is in a normal, fever, or high fever range, respectively.

The device is only intended for the measurement of human body temperature. It is not intended

to diagnose or monitor a serious medical condition or disease.

How does Braun ThermoScan® work?

Braun ThermoScan measures the infrared heat generated by the eardrum and surrounding

tissues. When placed in the ear, Braun ThermoScan continuously monitors the infrared energy

and the ExactTemp® Stability Indicator displays a reading only if the thermometer detects that

an accurate and stable temperature measurement has been taken.

How to use your Braun ThermoScan®

Remove the thermometer from the protective case.

Push the Power button .

During an internal self-check, the display shows all segments.

Then the last temperature taken will be displayed for 5 seconds.

NOTE: You must select an age in order to take a measurement.

The hygienic lens lter indicator will blink to signal

one is needed.

To achieve accurate measurements, make sure a

new, clean, hygienic lens lter is in place before each

measurement.

Attach a new hygienic lens lter by pushing the

thermometer probe straight into the lens lter inside

the box and then pulling out.

Note: The Braun ThermoScan will not work unless a

hygienic lens lter is attached.

The thermometer is ready to take a temperature when the display

looks like the image below.

ExacTemp® Stability Indicator light will pulse while temperature measurement is

in progress. The light will remain solid for 3 seconds to indicate that a

successful temperature reading has been achieved.

NOTE: If the probe has been properly inserted into the ear canal during the

measurement, a long beep will sound to signal the completed measurement.

If the probe has NOT been constantly placed in a stable position in the

ear canal, a sequence of short beeps will sound, the ExacTemp® Stability

Indicator light light will go out and the display will show an error message

(POS = position error).

The conrmation beep indicates that an accurate temperature measurement has been taken.

Temperature-taking hints

ALWAYS replace disposable lens lters to maintain accuracy and hygiene. The right ear

measurement may dier from the measurement taken in the left ear. Therefore, ALWAYS take the

temperature in the same ear. The ear must be free from obstructions or excess earwax build-up to

take an accurate reading.

External factors may inuence ear temperatures, including when an individual has:

This model stores the last 9 temperature measurements.

To display the stored measurement, the thermometer

must be turned on.

Press the Mem button.

The display shows the temperature, and when releasing

the Mem button, the stored temperature for that

memory number is displayed, together with “M”.

Each time the Mem button is pushed, the stored

reading and an M is displayed to indicate each

temperature measurement (e.g., M2).

Memory mode is automatically exited by

not pressing the memory button for 5 seconds.

The thermometer includes a convenient night light to illuminate

the display in a dim environment.

The light will turn on when you press any button. It will stay on

until the thermometer is inactive for up to 15 seconds even after

temperature is taken.

How to change temperature between °F and °C

US: Your Braun ThermoScan is shipped with the Fahrenheit (°F) temperature scale activated.

If you wish to switch to Celsius (°C) and/or back from Fahrenheit to Celsius, proceed as follows:

CA: Your Braun Thermoscan is shipped with the Celsius (C) temperature scale activated.

If you wish to switch to Fahrenheit (F) and/or back from Celsius to Fahrenheit, proceed as follows:

Make sure the thermometer is turned o.

Press and hold down the Power button . After about 3 seconds

the display will show this sequence: °F / SET / °C / SET.

Release the Power button when the desired temperature scale is shown.

There will be a short beep to conrm the new setting, then the thermometer

is turned o automatically.

Care and cleaning

The probe tip is the most delicate part of the thermometer.

It must be clean and intact to ensure accurate readings.

If the thermometer is ever accidentally used without a hygienic lens lter, clean the

probe tip as follows:

Very gently wipe the surface with a cotton swab or soft cloth moistened with alcohol.

After the alcohol has completely dried out, you can put a new lens lter on and take a

temperature measurement.

If the probe tip is damaged, please contact Consumer Relations.

Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the thermometer display and exterior. DO NOT use abrasive cleaners.

NEVER submerge this thermometer in water or any other liquid. Store thermometer and lens lters

in a dry location free from dust and contamination and away from direct sunlight.

Additional hygienic lens lter (LF 40) are available at most stores carrying Braun ThermoScan.

Replacing the batteries

The thermometer is supplied with two 1.5 V type AA (LR06) batteries.

Insert new batteries when the battery symbol appears on the display.

Open the battery compartment. Remove the batteries and replace with

new batteries, making sure the poles are in the right direction.

Snap battery door into place.

Only discard empty batteries. To protect the environment, dispose of

empty batteries at your retail store or at appropriate collection sites

according to national or local regulations.

Do not mix alkaline, standard, or rechargeable batteries.

Calibration

The thermometer is initially calibrated at the time of manufacture. If this thermometer is used

according to the use instructions, periodic re-adjustment is not required. If at any time you question

the accuracy, please contact Consumer Relations.

Chez les personnes qui prennent des antibiotiques, analgésiques ou antipyrétiques, la gravité de la

maladie ne devrait pas être évaluée uniquement en fonction des relevés de température.

Une élévation de la température peut être le signe d’une maladie grave, en particulier chez les nouveau-nés

et les nourrissons, ou chez les adultes âgés et fragiles ou dont le système immunitaire est aaibli. Demandez

immédiatement un avis médical en cas d’élévation de la température si celle-ci est mesurée chez :

• des nouveau-nés et des nourrissons de moins de trois mois (consultez immédiatement votre médecin

si la température dépasse 99,4 °F ou 37,4 °C).

• des personnes qui ont des problèmes de diabète sucré ou dont le système immunitaire est aaibli (par

ex. personnes séropositives pour le VIH, sous chimiothérapie pour un cancer, recevant un traitement

immunosuppresseur chronique, ayant subi une splénectomie);

• des personnes alitées (par ex. paraplégie, quadriplégie, accident vasculaire cérébral, maladie chronique,

rétablissement postopératoire, patient d’un centre d’hébergement et de soins longue durée)

• des personnes ayant reçu une gree (par ex. du foie, du cœur, du poumon, du rein).

Ce thermomètre contient des petites pièces qui peuvent être avalées ou provoquer un risque de

suocation chez les enfants.

Conservez-le hors de portée des enfants.

Température corporelle

La température corporelle normale correspond à une fourchette de valeurs. Elle varie en fonction de la

partie du corps où elle est relevée et diminue généralement avec l’âge. Elle varie également d’une

personne à l’autre et au cours d’une même journée. Il est donc important de déterminer les fourchettes

de températures normales. Cette évaluation est très simple avec le thermomètre ThermoScan Braun.

Entraînez-vous à prendre la température sur vous-même et sur les membres de votre famille en bonne

santé an de déterminer vos fourchettes de températures normales.

Remarque : lorsque vous consultez votre médecin, indiquez-lui que la température mesurée par

ThermoScan est une température auriculaire et, si possible, notez la fourchette de températures

ThermoScan habituelle pour la personne concernée, à titre d’indication supplémentaire.

Pourquoi prendre les mesures dans l’oreille ?

L’objectif de la thermométrie est de mesurer la température centrale du corps1, qui correspond

à la température des organes vitaux. La température auriculaire reète précisément la

température corporelle centrale3, le tympan étant irrigué par les mêmes ux sanguins que

l’hypothalamus, qui est le centre de régulation de la température du cerveau4. Par conséquent,

les changements de température corporelle se reètent plus rapidement dans l’oreille que

dans les autres parties du corps. La température axillaire mesure la température de la peau et

ne constitue pas toujours un indicateur able de la température corporelle centrale. La

température buccale est inuencée par la consommation de boissons et d’aliments et par la

respiration buccale. La température rectale reète souvent avec retard la température

corporelle centrale et il existe en outre un risque de contamination croisée.

Les recherches cliniques montrent que la dénition de la èvre change lorsque les

nouveaux-nés deviennent des enfants et que les enfants deviennent des adultes. 2

Sélectionnez la tranche d’âge appropriée, prenez la température et l’écran deviendra

vert, jaune ou rouge pour indiquer si la température est normale, si la personne fait de

la èvre ou une èvre élevée, respectivement. L’appareil n’est conçu que pour mesurer

la température corporelle humaine. Il n’est pas conçu pour diagnostiquer ou surveiller

un trouble médical ou une maladie grave.

Comment le ThermoScanMD Braun fonctionne-t-il ?

Le thermomètre ThermoScan Braun mesure la chaleur infrarouge émise par le

tympan et les tissus environnants. Lorsque le thermomètre ThermoScan Braun

est placé dans l’oreille, il mesure l’énergie infrarouge en continu et l’indicateur

de stabilité ExactTempMD ache un résultat seulement si le thermomètre détecte

qu’une mesure de température précise a été eectuée.

Comment utiliser votre ThermoScanMD Braun ?

Le thermomètre est prêt à prendre une température lorsque l’écran correspond aux

images ci-dessous.

L’indicateur d’embout jetable clignote pour signaler qu’un

embout jetable est nécessaire.

Pour obtenir des mesures précises, assurez-vous qu’un

nouvel embout jetable propre est installé avant chaque

relevé de température.

Fixez un nouvel embout jetable en poussant la sonde

du thermomètre directement dans l’embout jetable à

l’intérieur de la boîte, puis en la ressortant.

Remarque : Le thermomètre ThermoScan Braun ne

fonctionne pas tant qu’il ne comporte pas d’embout jetable.

Le voyant lumineux ExacTempMD clignote pendant que la mesure de la

température est en cours.

Le voyant lumineux reste xe pendant 3 secondes pour indiquer que la

mesure de la température est terminée.

REMARQUE : Si la sonde a été correctement introduite dans le conduit

auditif pendant la mesure, un long bip signale la n de la mesure.

Si la sonde n’a PAS été placée dans une position stable et constante dans

le conduit auditif, une série de bips courts retentit, le voyant lumineux

ExacTemp s’éteint et l’écran ache un message d’erreur (POS = erreur

de position).

Le thermomètre auriculaire ThermoScan Braun s’éteint

automatiquement après 60 secondes d’inactivité. Il est

également possible de l’éteindre en appuyant sur le

bouton marche/arrêt .

L’indication OFF clignote brièvement puis l’écran

devient blanc.

Conseils pour la mesure de la température

Remplacez toujours les embouts jetables an de préserver la précision et l’hygiène du thermomètre.

La prise de mesure peut diérer entre l’oreille droite et l’oreille gauche. Par conséquent, veillez à toujours

prendre la température dans la même oreille. Pour obtenir une mesure précise, l’oreille ne doit pas être

obstruée ou présenter d’accumulation excessive de cérumen.

Des facteurs externes peuvent inuencer la température auriculaire, incluant notamment les suivants :

dans le conduit auditif.

Utilisez l’oreille vers le haut, si la personne était couchée sur le côté avec une oreille vers le bas sur un oreiller.
