Introducing Matrox Multi
This chapter lists the Multi
system requirements, and
describes the Multi
documentation.
2
Chapter 1, Introducing Matrox Multi
Welcome to Matrox Multi
The Matrox Multi family of input/output cards are single-slot SDI cards that
provide up to four independent inputs or outputs to Mac Pro and Apple Xserve
systems. You can install multiple Matrox Multi cards in one system, and
configure each card individually using the Matrox Multi preferences window.
Designed to operate with dedicated third-party applications, Matrox Multi cards
bring a new level of channel density to your Mac system.
Matrox Multi cards feature simultaneous and independent SDI inputs/outputs
that allow you to capture and play back different video formats at the same time.
Multi cards include a 10-bit on-board hardware scaler, and support a full range of
broadcast-quality video/audio inputs and outputs in NTSC and PAL, as well as
480p, 720p, 1080p, and 1080i resolutions at all frame rates. All Multi cards
feature up to 16 channels of embedded SDI audio, four unbalanced analog audio
output RCA connectors for monitoring (not supported on Multi-Ingest), one
analog black burst reference input with loop-through output, one LTC input, and
an RS-422 connector for device control.
Matrox Multi system requirements
Matrox Multi requires a Mac system or Apple Xserve system with the following
configuration:
Intel-based Mac Pro or Apple Xserve.
Mac OS X v10.6.7.
One free PCIe ×8 (electrical) slot or greater.
For up-to-date information about system requirements, check the Matrox Multi
Support section of our website at www.matrox.com/video/support.

Installing Your Matrox Multi
Hardware and Software
This chapter describes how to
install the Multi hardware and
software.
4
Chapter 2, Installing Your Matrox Multi Hardware and Software
Before you install your Matrox Multi hardware
Read the following information carefully before attempting to install Matrox
Multi hardware.
Start with a functioning system
Before attempting any Matrox Multi installation, you should have a Mac
computer system with Mac OS X fully installed and functioning smoothly. This
will avoid potential problems later on.
Avoid costly damage
Static electricity from your body can damage your Matrox Multi card or your
system. Although you may not notice it, static electricity is generated every time
you move. It’s often too small to cause a spark, but it can still cause damage to
sensitive electronic components or at least reduce their lifespan.
To avoid damage, please observe the following precautions:
Do not remove your Matrox Multi card from its antistatic bag until youre
ready to install it. Before removing the card, place the package within easy
reach of the area where you intend to perform the installation.
You should avoid touching the chips and other components on the circuit
board. Try to handle the card by its edges.
Try to work in an area where the relative humidity is at least 50%.
Do not wear wool or synthetic clothing. These fabrics tend to generate more
static electricity than cotton, which is best for this kind of work.
Turn off the power switches on your system and its connected components.
Once you’ve opened your system, drain static electricity from your body by
touching a bare metal surface on your system chassis before you install or
remove any parts of your system. If you have a grounding wrist strap, use it while
handling and installing any components in your system.
5
Setting the genlock loop-through switch
Setting the genlock loop-through switch
Matrox Multi features genlock loop-through that lets you use the REF OUT
connector to daisy chain the external genlock reference input (connected to REF
IN) to another device’s reference input. Before installing the Multi card in your
system, set the genlock loop-through switch located on the Matrox Multi card to
either enable genlock loop-through, or disable loop-through by terminating the
reference signal.
If you will connect an external genlock source to Multi’s REF IN connector, and
you plan on using the REF OUT connector, set the genlock switch to
HI-Z. If the
REF OUT connector will not be used, set the switch to
75Ω to terminate the
reference signal.
¦NoteIf the genlock switch is set to HI-Z, you can still terminate the reference
signal by connecting a BNC 75Ω terminator to the REF OUT connector.

Chapter 2, Installing Your Matrox Multi Hardware and Software
Installing your Matrox Multi card
The Matrox Multi card is a three-quarter-length PCIe ×8 card designed to operate
in an Intel-based Mac Pro or Apple Xserve system. You can install multiple
Matrox Multi cards in one system. The maximum number of Multi cards that you
can install depends on the number of suitable PCIe slots in your system. For
detailed instructions on how to perform the following steps, refer to your Mac
Pro or Xserve documentation.
1 Shut down your Mac Pro or Xserve system, unplug the power cord and all
the cables from the unit, and open the Mac Pro or Xserve chassis.
2 Ensure that the genlock loop-through switch on the card is set as desired (see
“Setting the genlock loop-through switch” on page 5).
3 Insert the Matrox Multi card in an available PCIe slot in your Mac Pro or
Xserve, and secure the card into place.
²Caution To avoid damage to the Multi card when installed in an Xserve
system, ensure that the metal mesh gasket around the slot opening on the
Xserve does not bend and make contact with any pins or components on the
Multi card.
4 Close your Mac Pro or Xserve chassis, and reconnect the power cord and all
the cables to the unit.
Installing your Matrox Multi software
You can install the Matrox Multi software on a computer with or without the
Multi card installed. To download and install the Matrox Multi software, visit the
Multi Support section of our website at www.matrox.com/video/support. You can
also contact your Multi dealer for software.
Updating your Multi firmware
When you install the Multi software on a computer with the Multi card already
installed, the software installation automatically verifies the firmware on your
Multi card and updates it if required. However, if you install the Multi software
on a computer without the Multi card installed, your card may have a firmware
version that is not supported by the installed Multi software. Once you install the
Multi card, if it has an incompatible firmware version, a message regarding the
incompatibility between the Multi software and firmware will appear in the
Matrox Multi preferences window, along with a
Launch firmware updater
button.
To update the Multi firmware from the Matrox Multi preferences window, click
Launch firmware updater to run the Matrox Firmware Updater. You’ll be
required to shut down your system to complete the firmware update.
7
Removing your Matrox Multi software
²Caution Do not power off your computer, or interrupt the firmware update
during the update process. Doing so may damage your Multi card.
Alternately, you can update your Multi firmware by running the Matrox
Firmware Updater from the Finder window as follows:
1 Make sure that your Matrox Multi card is installed in your computer (see
“Installing your Matrox Multi cardon page 6).
2 Start your computer.
3 In the Finder menu, choose File > New Finder Window.
4 Choose Applications > Matrox Multi Utilities, and double-click the
firmware updater file to run the Matrox Firmware Updater. You’ll be
required to shut down your system to complete the firmware update.
Removing your Matrox Multi software
1 In the Finder menu, choose File > New Finder Window.
2 Choose Applications > Matrox Multi Utilities, and double-click the
software uninstaller file.
3 In the uninstaller dialog box, select or clear the Delete the Matrox
software user preferences
option. When selected, all current user settings
in the Matrox Multi preferences window will be removed from your
computer. Clear this option if you wish to keep your current Multi user
settings for a future Multi software installation.
4 Click Continue.
5 Enter your administrator password, and click OK to remove the Multi
software from your computer.
