Your Krups espresso machine is equipped with a filter-holder that has three patented systems designed
to help you make the perfect espresso at home.
1. KRUPS Precise Tamp: gradual tamping of the espresso ground coffee as the filter-holder is turned
ensures that coffee is tamped precisely each time.
2. Coffee ejection system under the filter-holder for clean removal of the cake each time.
3. The filter-holder is compatible with all types of pods including E.S.E. and soft pods.
The filter-holder is also removable and can be frequently cleaned to maintain the filter-holder system in
perfect working order. For your safety, the filter-holder is equipped with a locking system when pressure
rises.

English
n Before removing the water tank to fill or empty it, always turn the appliance off.
n Always place the unit on a flat, stable, heat-resistant work surface.
n To obtain an espresso at exactly the right temperature, we recommend that you preheat your cups.
n To prolong the life of your appliance, we recommend you always use a Claris Aqua Filter System cartridge
(reference: F088) and that you descale the appliance at regular intervals
IMPORTANT!
Before using for the first time, after a prolonged period of inactivity or after
descaling, the machine must be cleaned as described in paragraph 4: “USING”.
Before using your espresso machine for the first time, clean all accessories using warm water and a gentle
dishwashing liquid, and rinse well before replacing.
Make sure the steam knob on the right of the appliance is in the 0 position.
If you are not using the Claris cartridge, please refer to the paragraph below “RINSING OF
YOUR APPLIANCE”.
A. INSTALLING THE CLARIS CARTRIDGE (to be done every time the cartridge is replaced)
n Screw the Claris filter into the bottom of the water tank.
n Fill the water tank with water and replace it (fig.2 and 3).
n Place a container under the steam nozzle.
n Turn the machine on by pressing the "On / Off" button (fig.4).
n As soon as the machine reaches the required temperature, the "on/off" button stops flashing and the
1 cup and 2 cups buttons light up.
n Turn the knob to the “steam” position (fig. 13).
n At the beginning, steam comes out of the steam nozzle and the four buttons flash.
n Turn the knob to the “0” position (fig. 15). The machine automatically starts 2 or 3 cycles of intermittent
pumping.
n The four buttons begin to flash again.
n Turn the knob to the “steam” position: water comes out of the steam nozzle. If water does not flow from
the nozzle, repeat the operation from the beginning.
n Turn the knob to the “0” position (fig. 15).
n In this manner you can be sure that water is circulating through the filter cartridge.
IMPORTANT:
This installation procedure must be carried out every time the cartridge is
replaced.
The Claris cartridge needs to be replaced every 2 to 3 months if it is used daily.
B. RINSING YOUR APPLIANCE (to be done before the first use and after each cleaning /
descaling operation)
- RINSING OUT THE ESPRESSO CIRCUIT

n Press the button, it starts to flash.
n When the button has stopped flashing, turn the steam switch to position and let the water run until
steam is formed.
n Keep the steam production going for at least 30 seconds.
In order to extract the maximum flavor from the beans, this machine pre-infuses each cup. The pump works
for 3 seconds, pauses for 3 seconds, and then continues until the cup is finished.
PREHEATING THE ACCESSORIES
For the best results, we recommend that you preheat the accessories (filter holder and cups) without
espresso ground coffee. To do so:
n Fill the water tank and turn the machine on. (fig.1, 2, 3 and 4).
n Put the filter holder in place, place the cups below.
As soon as the appliance reaches the required temperature, the "on/off" light stops flashing and the "1
cup" and "2 cups" buttons light up.
n Then press the "1 cup" or "2 cups" button (fig. 8 or 9).
n Once the cup or cups are filled with hot water, remove them.
n Unlock the filter holder: press "OPEN" while turning the filter holder to the left and remove it from the
machine. (fig.10).
WITH GROUND COFFEE
The type of coffee you choose will determine the strength and taste of your espresso. Always
use espresso ground coffee. Do not use instant coffee, cafetiere coffee or filter coffee.
n Fill the water tank and turn the machine on (fig. 1, 2, 3 and 4). During the preheating of the appliance,
the light flashes.
n Using the measuring spoon, place the espresso ground coffee in the filter holder: one spoon (full to the
brim) per cup (fig.5).
n Remove any excess espresso ground coffee from the edge of the filter.
Important: Do not tamp the coffee down in the filter holder. The coffee is automatically
tamped using the KTS “Krups Tamping System”.
n Insert the filter holder in the device by turning it to the right as far as it will go, up to the stop
(fig.7).
n Put one or two cups under the filter holder.
As soon as the appliance reaches the required temperature, the "on/off" light stops flashing and the "1
cup" and "2 cups" buttons light up.
n Then press the "1 cup" or "2 cups" button (fig. 8 or 9).
5. MAKING AN ESPRESSO

7
English
n Once the cup or cups are filled, unlock the filter holder press “OPEN” while turning the filter holder to
the left and remove it from the machine (fig. 10).
n Remove the used espresso coffee grounds using the ejection system by pressing the "EJECT" button
located between the two coffee outlet nozzles (fig.11). Wash the filter under running water, pressing
"EJECT" to eliminate the remnants of grounds.
The filter holder can now be filled again to prepare other espressos.
Note: It is always possible to stop the coffee flowing by pressing the "1 cup" or "2 cups" button again.
IMPORTANT: If you want a strong or light espresso, vary the amount of coffee or water (a full
spoon for a strong espresso and a less full spoon for a light espresso). But in both cases, be
sure to tighten your filter holder as much as possible.
WITH AN “E.S.E." ESPRESSO POD
“ESE” for “Easy Serving Espresso" is a packaged pod (44 mm diameter) of 7g of selected
coffee, ground and compacted between two paper filters, specially designed to make Italian
style ristretto (tight) espressos.
This system allows for simple and clean use of your machine.
n Fill the water tank and turn the machine on (fig. 1, 2, 3 and 4). During the pre-heating phase, the
indicator light will flash.
n If necessary, tear the excess pre-cut paper off the pod, put the E.S.E. pod in the filter holder, with the
red writing facing down, if any (fig.6).
n Be sure to place all the paper inside the filter holder, otherwise there might be leaks.
n If the pod is not positioned correctly, the result in the cup will not be satisfactory.
n Never use two pods together.
n Then, follow steps of pictures 7 to 11 for preparing an espresso.
n NB: Once you have obtained the sufficient amount of coffee, you can stop the flow at any time by
pressing the "1 cup" button (fig.8).
WITH A SOFT POD
Your machine is also compatible with soft pods, which are usually smaller in diameter than
E.S.E. pods. However since soft pods are not specifically designed for use with espresso
machines, you will get a less flavorful espresso than with an E.S.E. pod.
n Fill the water tank and turn the machine on (fig. 1, 2, 3 and 4). During the pre-heating phase, the
indicator light will flash.
n Place a soft pod in the filter holder. Never use two pods together.
n Be sure to place all the paper inside the filter holder, otherwise there might be leaks. If the pod
is not positioned correctly, the result in the cup will not be satisfactory.
n Then, follow steps of pictures 7 to 11.
NB: Once you have obtained the sufficient amount of coffee, you can stop the flow at any time by pressing
the "1 cup" button (fig.8).
INDIVIDUAL PROGRAMMING OF THE VOLUME OF WATER DISPENSED
To change the pre-programmed amount of water (50 ml per cup is the factory setting), proceed as follows:
n Fill the water tank and turn the machine on (fig. 1, 2, 3 and 4).
n Put a spoonful of coffee in the filter by using a measuring spoon or use an E.S.E. or soft pod.
n Put the filter holder in place and lock it by turning it to the right as far as it will go, up to the stop (fig. 7).
n Place a cup under the filter holder.
n Hold down the "1 cup" button (> 3 sec) until the "1 cup" light flashes quickly. The coffee flows out.
n When the desired amount of espresso is obtained, press the "1 cup" button. This amount will be saved
automatically.
n The next time when you press the "1 cup" button, you will obtain the most recently recorded amount.
Programming for 2 cups uses the same method, by pressing the "2 cups" button (> 3 sec).

Steam is used to foam milk (for example to make a cappuccino or a cafe latte).
To produce steam, the pump works by emitting an intermittent noise.
After using the steam function, the appliance cools automatically by pumping cold water through
the heating system. During the pumping cycles, the excess steam in the heating system is released with
the hot water into the drip tray. The steam and noise that accompany this phase are important for
cooling the appliance.
Warning: during and after using the appliance, the metal parts of the steam nozzle can become very hot.
USING THE STEAM NOZZLE TO FROTH MILK
n Fill the water tank and turn the machine on (fig. 1, 2, 3 and 4).
n After a few moments, the "on/off" light stops flashing and the "1 cup" and "2 cups" buttons light up.
n Press the “steam pre-heating” button. During preheating, the "on/off" and "steam pre-heating" lights
flash and the "1 cup" and "2 cups" lights go off (fig.12).
n Move the steam nozzle towards the outside of the appliance.
n Pour 60 to 100ml of cold fresh fat-free, low fat or whole milk in a small container that is about ½ litre
and can pass under the steam nozzle. The milk (UHT or pasteurised) and its container should be quite
cold.
n As soon as the device reaches the required temperature, the "on/off" and "steam pre-heating" lights
stop flashing.
n Place the steam nozzle in the milk and turn the knob to the “steam” position (fig. 13). The "steam pre-
heating" light will flash while steam is being produced.
n For a good result, hold the nozzle towards the bottom of the container for about 25 seconds while the
milk heats (without however touching the bottom of the container). Then, bring the container down
gradually so that the nozzle moves up towards the surface (without the nozzle coming out of the milk)
(fig.14).
n Once the froth has been formed, turn the knob to the “0” position (fig.15). The appliance will now
automatically cool itself by launching 3 intermittent pumping cycles. Once this automatic operation is
complete, you can make a coffee.
Important: To prevent the steam nozzle holes from being clogged, the milk foam must not reach the black
plastic upper part.
It is important to clean the steam nozzle after each use to prevent the milk from drying on the inside of the
nozzle. To do so:
n Place the steam nozzle in a container with water and repeat the milk frothing operation for 30 seconds.
WARNING!
The steam nozzle will be hot!
USING THE KRUPS XS-6000 AUTO-CAPPUCCINO SET TO FROTH MILK
The auto-cappuccino accessory makes it easier to make a cappuccino or a caffe latte. It is made up of a
special dual-position nozzle and a pipe.
n Fill the water tank and turn the machine on (fig. 1, 2, 3 and 4).
n Attach the auto-cappuccino accessory firmly to the arm.
n Place a cup under the self-cappuccino accessory.
n Pour approximately 100 ml of fresh, cold, fat-free, low fat or whole milk in a container.
n Immerse the pipe into the container, or directly into the carton of milk.
Note: Assemble the pipe firmly on the cappuccino accessory (fig.24).
n Turn the accessory's switch to the “cappuccino” or "latte" position.
n Press the “steam pre-heating” button. During preheating, the "on/off" and "steam pre-heating" lights
flash and the "1 cup" and "2 cups" lights go off (fig.12).
6. STEAM FUNCTION

n As soon as the device reaches the required temperature, the "on/off" and "steam pre-heating" lights stop
flashing. Turn the knob to the “steam” position (fig. 13). The milk is transferred from the container to the cup.
n Once the milk has been frothed, turn the knob to the “0” position (fig.15). The appliance will now
automatically cool itself by launching a number of intermittent pumping cycles. Once this automatic
operation is complete, you can make a coffee.
n To clean the auto-cappuccino device, please repeat the milk foaming procedure by replacing the 100ml
of milk with 100ml water.
n For thorough cleaning of the cappuccino accessory, see the paragraph "Cleaning and Maintenance".
n IMPORTANT: Your espresso machine accessories are not dishwasher-safe. Do not wash the spoon,
the drip tray, the filter holder and the water tank in the dishwasher.
CLEANING OF THE MACHINE
n Unplug the power supply before cleaning and let the appliance cool down.
n Clean the outside of the appliance from time to time with a damp cloth. After use, the water tank must
be emptied.
n Rinse inside the tank regularly.
n When a thin white layer starts to form in the tank, carry out a descaling operation (see paragraph 9
"DESCALING").
CLEANING OF THE DRIP TRAY
The drip tray must be emptied after each time the appliance is used. Lift up slightly and remove it from the
appliance.
If multiple espressos are prepared one after the other, it should be emptied from time to time (every 7 to
8 espressos approximately) (fig.19 and 20). The presence of water is normal and is not the sign of a leak.
If necessary, clean the drip tray and its grid with water and a little gentle washing-up liquid, rinse and dry.
When reassembling the components, make sure everything is in the right place.
CLEANING OF THE BREWING HEAD AND FILTER HOLDER
n They must be cleaned after each use. Simply wipe a damp cloth over the percolation head (fig. 21)
and clean the filter holder under running water and use a small amount of gentle washing-up liquid.
n Do not use alcohol or solvent-based cleaning products.
n For best results, you can activate the "EJECT" button several times during rinsing. We recommend that
you shake the filter holder thoroughly in order to remove all the water.
n Rinse and dry.
n When not using your espresso coffee maker, do not leave the filter holder fitted in the appliance, in
order to avoid wear to the seal
For more thorough cleaning, the filter holder can be dismantled:
n You can remove the black plastic part where the coffee outlets and the "EJECT" button are to be found:
turn it to the left and pull sharply (fig. 22).
n Clean the various components under running water and a little gentle washing-up liquid.
n Rinse and dry.
n Replace the black plastic part in the metal holder, turn it to the right until the two arrows on each
component line up.
If the percolation head is heavily clogged up, unscrew the grid using a screw-driver, clean it and refit it,
pressing down firmly (fig.23).

CLEANING OF THE STEAM NOZZLE
n This accessory consists of 2 parts: one part which is the plastic support and the other which is the
metal protection cylinder.
n Before cleaning, unlock the nozzle from the articulated arm by turning it to the left. (fig.16, 16.2)
n Then slide the metal cylinder along the plastic support (fig.16.3).
n Clean these two parts with tap water and some mild washing-up liquid (fig.17).
n Rinse and dry.
n Once the parts have been properly cleaned, put the metal cylinder back on the support.
n Make sure that you don’t damage the silicone seal which makes the nozzle watertight (fig.16.3).
n Insert the nozzle on the articulated arm then lock to the right (fig.18.1, 18.2).
CLEANING OF THE AUTO-CAPPUCCINO ACCESSORY
n For more thorough cleaning, the filter holder can be dismantled into 4 separate parts.
n Use water and a little gentle washing-up liquid and a small brush. Rinse it and dry it and then put it back
together.
n Note the direction in which the tube in inserted (fig.24).
The warranty does not cover machines which have become faulty because descaling was not periodically
performed.
Descale your espresso machine regularly using , available from Krups authorized service centers.
In addition to two packets of descaling powder, the kit also includes a water hardness tester to help you
determine the proper schedule for descaling your machine in normal use. The amount of scale that
develops depends on the hardness of the water used, but also the level of use. The schedule indicated
by the water hardness tester is a general guideline only. Keep in mind that you may have to descale more
frequently than indicated.
If in doubt, it is recommended to descale every month.
DESCALING THE MACHINE
n Empty the tank and replace.
n If you are using a Claris cartridge (model F088) in your water tank, remove the cartridge before
descaling.
n Follow the instructions for using the Krups descaling powder inside the kit.
n Then insert the filter holder (without espresso grounds) and lock into place by turning to the right. Place
a container under the steam nozzle to catch the water.
n Press the “on/off” button to turn the machine on. During the pre-heating phase, the indicator light will
flash. Once it stops blinking, turn the knob to the “steam” position (fig.13) and let 3.4 oz of this mixture
drain flow through (the equivalent of a mug) and then turn the knob back to the "0" position (fig.15).
n Place a container of sufficient volume under the filter holder.
n Once the light stops flashing, press the "2 cups" button and let the water flow through before repeating.
n Turn the appliance off by pressing the "On / Off" button immediately after this second cycle.
