INTRODUCTION

The Portable Metal-Cutting Band Saw is ideal for cutting aluminum,

brass, copper and steel bars or pipes.

SAFETY

WARNING! Read and understand all instructions before using this

tool. The operator must follow basic precautions to reduce the

risk of personal injury and/or damage to the equipment.

Keep this manual for safety warnings, precautions, operating or

inspection and maintenance instructions.

WORK AREA

1. Operate in a safe work environment. Keep your work area clean,

well-lit and free of distractions. Place lights so you are not working

in a shadow.

2. Keep anyone not wearing the appropriate safety equipment away

from the work area.

3. Store tools properly in a safe and dry location. Keep tools out of

the reach of children.

4. Do not install or use in the presence of flammable gases, dust or

liquids.

PERSONAL SAFETY

WARNING! Wear personal protective equipment approved by the

Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or American National

Standards Institute (ANSI).

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

1. Always wear impact safety goggles that provide front and side

protection for the eyes. Eye protection equipment should comply

with CSA Z94.3-07 or ANSI Z87.1 standards based on the type of

work performed.

2. Wear the appropriate type of full-face shield in addition to safety

googles, as the work can create chips, abrasive or particulate

matter.

3. Wear gloves that provide protection based on the work materials or

to reduce the effects of tool vibration.

3.1 Do not wear gloves when operating a tool that can snag the

material and pull the hand into the tool.

4. Wear protective clothing designed for the work environment and tool.

5. Non-skid footwear is recommended to maintain footing and

balance in the work environment.

6. Wear steel toe footwear or steel toe caps to prevent a foot injury

from falling objects.

7. Wear the appropriate rated dust mask or respirator.

8. This tool can cause hearing damage. Wear hearing protection gear

with an appropriate Noise Reduction Rating to withstand the

decibel levels.

PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS

Control the tool, personal movement and the work environment to avoid

personal injury or damage to the tool.

1. Do not operate any tool when tired or under the influence of drugs,

alcohol or medications.

2. Avoid wearing clothes or jewelry that can become entangled with

the moving parts of a tool. Keep long hair covered or bound.

3. Do not overreach when operating the tool. Proper footing and

balance enables better control in unexpected situations.

4. Support the workpiece or clamp it to a stable platform. Holding the

workpiece by hand or against your body may lead to personal injury.

5. Securely hold this tool using both hands. Using a tool with only one

hand can result in loss of control.

6. Be alert at all times, especially during repetitive, monotonous

operations.

SPECIFIC SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

DANGER! When the tool is in operation, keep hands away from the

saw blade and the area it is being applied to. Failure to follow this

warning will result in amputation, serious personal injury or death.

WARNING! Some surfaces contain materials which can be toxic.

When working on materials that may contain lead, asbestos,

copper chromium arsenate or other toxic materials, extra care

should be taken to avoid inhalation and minimize skin contact.

WARNING! DO NOT let comfort or familiarity with product (gained

from repeated use) replace strict adherence to the tool safety rules.

If you use this tool unsafely or incorrectly, you can suffer serious

personal injury.

1. Use the correct tool for the job. This tool was designed for a

specific function. Do not modify or alter this tool or use it for an

unintended purpose.

2. Do not use the tool if any parts are damaged, broken or misplaced.

Repair or replace the parts.

3. Only use saw blades that are specifically designed for use with the

tool. Ensure the saw blade is tightly installed.

4. Do not use a dull or damaged cutting saw blade. A dull saw blade

requires more force to use the tool, possibly causing the saw blade

to break. This may cause an injury and will damage the workpiece.

4.1 Dull or improperly set saw blade produce a narrow kerf that can

cause excessive friction on the saw blade, resulting in binding or

a kickback. Keep the saw blade’s edge sharp and clean.

5. Only use a saw blade that exceeds the Speed Rating (see

Specifications).

6. Use the correct mounting hardware. The mounting hardware is

designed to hold the saw blade on the tool to allow optimum

performance and safety of operation. Mismatched mounting

hardware may result in a tool malfunction and cause an injury.

6.1 Always use blades that are correctly sized and shaped for the

tool. Blades that do not match the tool’s mounting hardware

will run erratically, causing loss of control.

7. Check the saw blade for damage before each use. A damaged

accessory can break during use and cause serious injury.

8. Affix the workpiece to a stable platform to prevent movement, minimize

body exposure to injury and saw blade binding or loss of control.

9. Position the tool on the larger section of a supported workpiece to

complete a cut. Cut the small portion away from the larger portion.

Support the smaller portion if possible to prevent it from binding

when the cut is almost complete.

10. Always handle the band saw blade with care when mounting or

removing it.

11. Never confine the part of the workpiece being cut away by holding,

clamping or using length stops against it. That part of the workpiece

could become wedged against the blade and be thrown violently. The

cut away part of the workpiece must be free to move sideways.

12. Ensure the tension handle is tightened (making the saw blade taut)

before each use.

13. Remove adjusting keys and wrenches before using the tool. The

tool may eject an attached wrench or a key and cause an injury to

you or a bystander.

POWER TOOL PRECAUTIONS

1. DO NOT use any power tool with a malfunctioning power switch or

control. A power tool that fails to respond to the controls is

dangerous and could cause an injury. A qualified technician must

repair and verify the power tool is operating correctly before it can

be used.

2. Do not allow the tool to run without load for an extended period of

time, as this will shorten its life.

3. Do not cover the air vents. Proper cooling of the motor is necessary

to ensure normal life of the tool.

4. Avoid unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is off when connecting

to the power source.

5. Disconnect the power source before installing or servicing the tool.

6. After making adjustments, make sure that any adjustment devices

are securely tightened.

7. Never force the tool. Forcing the tool will slow it down and could

cause the saw blade to bind or kickback. Excessive pressure could

break the tool, resulting in damage to your workpiece or cause serious

personal injury. If your tool runs smoothly under no load, but does not

run smoothly under load, then excessive pressure is being used.

Apply gentle pressure and allow the tool to do the work.

8. Do not touch an operating motor. Motors can operate at high

temperatures and can cause a burn injury.

9. Cutting material and the motor housing can get very hot during

operation. Stop work until tool and blade both cool down to safe

temperature.

10. Never point the tool towards yourself. It could inflict an injury.

11. Never touch the saw blade or workpiece during or immediately after

use. They may be hot and could inflict a burn injury.

12. Keep hands away from the cutting area and the saw blade. Always

be aware of the position of your hands relative to the blade. Avoid

awkward hand positions where a sudden slip could cause a hand

to move into the blade. Never reach behind or beneath the blade

13. This tool will not stop moving immediately. Do not lay the tool down

or leave it unattended until it has come to a complete stop. A part

that is moving could make the tool jump or grab a surface and pull

the tool out of your control.

14. Hold the tool by the insulated gripping surfaces when performing an

operation where the tool may contact hidden electrical wiring. The

tool’s exposed metal surfaces may convey a shock to the operator

from a ‘live’ wire.

KICKBACK PRECAUTIONS

Kickback is a sudden reaction to a pinched or snagged saw blade. The

tool kicks out and away from the workpiece while the saw blade is still

active. This can inflict a serious injury on the user or a bystander.

Kickback can also damage the tool or workpiece.

Kickback can be avoided by taking proper precautions:

1. Maintain a firm grip on the tool and position your body and arms to

allow you to resist a kickback. Kickback will propel the tool in the

direction opposite to the saw blade’s teeth or direction of rotation. A

snagged rotary cutting bit may pull the tool out of the grasp of the user.

2. If kickback occurs:

2.1 The saw blade may pass over a body part, causing a

seriously injury;

2.2 The tool may strike bystanders.

3. Use clamps or a vice to hold down smaller workpieces.

4. Use special care when working on corners, sharp edges or flexible

material. These workpieces have a tendency to snag the saw blade.

5. Only use a saw blade designed for the tool.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY

WARNING! Do not touch or handle a live tool with any part of your

body that is wet or damp. Wet skin reduces resistance to electrical

current, increasing the danger of a serious or fatal shock.

WARNING! To reduce risk of electric shock, be certain that the

plug is connected to a properly grounded receptacle.

WARNING! All wiring should be performed by a qualified

electrician.

1. Disconnect tool from power source before cleaning, servicing,

changing parts/accessories or when not in use.

2. Protect yourself against electric shocks when working on electrical

equipment. Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces. There is

an increased chance of electrical shock if your body is grounded.

3. Do not expose the tool to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a

tool will increase the risk of electric shock.

4. Do not disconnect the power cord in place of using the ON/OFF

switch on the tool. This will prevent an accidental start-up when the

power cord is plugged into the power supply.

4.1 In the event of a power failure, turn off the machine as soon as

the power is interrupted. The possibility of accidental injury could

occur if the power returns and the unit is not switched off.

5. Do not alter any parts of the tool or accessories. All parts and

accessories are designed with built-in safety features that may be

compromised if altered.

6. Make certain the power source conforms to requirements of your

equipment (see Specifications).

7. When wiring an electrically driven device, follow all electrical and

safety codes, as well as the most recent Canadian Electrical Code

(CE) and Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety

(CCOHS).

POWER CORD

1. Insert the power cord plug directly to the power supply whenever

possible. Use extension cords or surge protectors only when the

tool's power cord cannot reach a power supply from the work area.

1.1 When operating a tool outside, use an outdoor extension cord

marked W-A or W. These cords are rated for outdoor use and

reduce the risk of electric shock.

2. Do not operate this tool if the power cord is frayed or damaged as an

electric shock or surge may occur, resulting in personal injury or

property damage.

2.1 Inspect the tool's power cord for cracks, fraying or other faults

in the insulation or plug before each use.

2.2 Discontinue use if a power cord feels more than comfortably

warm while operating the tool.

2.3 Have the power cord replaced by a qualified service

technician.

3. Keep all connections dry and off the ground to reduce the risk of

electric shock. Do not touch plug with wet hands.

4. Prevent damage to the power cord by observing the following:

4.1 Do not pull on the cord to disconnect the plug from an outlet.

4.2 Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts.

4.3 Never use the cord to carry the tool.

4.4 Place the electrical cord in a position that prevents it from

coming into contact with the tool and from getting caught by

the workpiece. The cord should always stay behind the tool.

5. Do not allow people, mobile equipment or vehicles to pass over

unprotected power cords.

5.1 Position power cords away from traffic areas.

5.2 Place cords in reinforced conduits.

5.3 Place planks on either side of the power cord to create a

protective trench.

6. Do not wrap cord around the tool as sharp edges may cut insulation or

cause cracks if wound too tight. Gently coil cord and either hang on a

hook or fasten with a device to keep cord together during storage.

LOW VOLTAGE

Low voltage may cause overheating due to higher power current being

drawn to the tool that will shorten the motor life.

An extension cord may cause a drop in power to the tool if it is too long

or the amperage rating is not correct. This may result in the following:

1. The tool will not activate when switched on.

2. The tool may switch on, but fails to maintain power when operated.

3. The tool may overheat, possibly starting a fire.

Test the tool by plugging it directly to the power supply. If it powers on,

change the extension cord with the correct rating and as short as needed.

The workpiece may also need to be relocated closer to the power supply.

ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS

WARNING! Shut off the electrical tool or device and move away if

you feel faint, dizzy, nausea or shocks. Seek medical attention.

Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) can interfere with electronic devices such

as pacemakers. Anyone with a pacemaker should consult with their

doctor before working with or near a tool that generates an EMF. The

following steps can minimize the effects of electromagnetic fields.

1. Keep the power source and any power cables as far away from the

user as practical. A minimum of 24 in. is recommended.

2. Avoid long and regular bursts of energy while operating the tool. Use

the tool for short or intermittent periods of time. This will prevent a

pacemaker from interpreting the signal as a rapid heartbeat.

3. Alert other people in the work area, so they can take precautions or

can watch out for those with a pacemaker.

VIBRATION PRECAUTIONS

1. This tool vibrates during use. Repeated or long-term exposure to

vibration may cause temporary or permanent physical injury. Take

frequent breaks when using the tool.

2. If you feel any medical symptoms related to vibrations (such as

tingling, numbness, and white or blue fingers), seek medical

attention as soon as possible.

3. Wear suitable gloves to reduce the effects of vibration.

4. DO NOT use this tool before consulting a physician if one of the

following applies:

• Pregnant

• Impaired blood circulation to

the hands

• Past hand injuries

• Nervous system disorders

• Diabetes

• Raynaud's Disease

UNPACKING

WARNING! Do not operate the tool if any part is missing. Replace

the missing part before operating. Failure to do so could result in

a malfunction and personal injury.

Remove the parts and accessories from the packaging and inspect for

damage. Make sure that all items in the contents are included.

ASSEMBLY & INSTALLATION

Letter references in parenthesis (A) refer to the included Identification Key.

BLADE INSTALLATION

WARNING! Do not use a stationary band saw blade for the

portable band saw. The stationary band saw blade is a different

thickness and will not fit the precision blade guides on the

portable band saw.

CAUTION! Wear gloves when handling the saw blade during

installation or removal to avoid cuts from the blade’s teeth.

1. Use band saw blades of the correction dimension (see

Specifications).

2. Select a blade that will allow at least two teeth to engage the

material.

2.1 Harder materials require finer blade teeth, while thicker or

coarse materials require coarser blade teeth.

2.2 Hi-speed steel blades stay sharp longer than alloy steel

blades.

3. Turn the tension handle (A) clockwise to release the blade tension.

4. Turn the band saw over so the rear side is facing up.

5. Remove the old blade if replacing it. Remove the blade from the

pulley before removing it from the guides.

6. Note the direction arrows on the wheels. Install the saw blade so the

teeth point to the left side (clockwise) when passing through the guide

bearings (K).

7. Set the blade between both guide bearings, ensuring the blade is

centered on each. Hold the blade on the guides and push in to

seat it.

8. Wrap the blade around the wheels. Ensure it is a proper fit and the

blade does not twist.

9. Tighten the tension handle (A) to secure the blade in place.

GUIDE BAR ASSEMBLY

1. Attach the guide bar (H) to the band saw

before operation.

2. Release the screws (J) on the frame.

3. Install the guide bar with the opening around

the blade. Adjust the guide bar distance as

desired.

4. Tighten the screws (J) to lock the guide in

place.

OPERATION

LUBRICATING THE BLADE

DANGER! Ensure the tool is stable and take precautions when

applying wax to the moving blade to avoid amputation or

serious injury.

1. Lubrication is recommended when cutting aluminum, brass and

thick materials. Cast iron should be cut dry. Choose a cutting or

lubricating wax that is designed for a band saw and comes in a

stick applicator. Apply the wax to both sides of the blade while the

saw is running. Reapply wax intermittently as needed.

2. After prolonged cutting, the wax will cling to the pulleys of your

portable band saw. This does not affect the operation of the

machine. All that is necessary is to disconnect the machine from

the power source and wipe the wax from the pulleys.

START AND STOP SAW

WARNING! Never use liquid coolant with your band saw. Liquid

coolants increase the risk of electric shock. It may also damage

the blade guide bearing or the rubber on the pulleys.

NOTICE! Do not change the saw speed during a cut. Remove the

saw from the material before adjusting the speed to avoid

damaging the tool.

NOTICE! If the band saw becomes locked or jammed in the

workpiece material during cutting, release the trigger switch

immediately to avoid damage to the band saw blade and motor.

1. Clamp the material to be cut in a vise or other clamping device.

Never attempt to use this tool by resting it on a work surface and

bringing the material to the tool. Always securely clamp the

workpiece and bring the tool to the workpiece, securely holding the

tool with two hands

1.1 Support end pieces that are heavy enough to cause injury

when they drop after cutting.

2. Adjust the guide bar (H) to the workpiece by loosening the screws

(I) and sliding the guide bar forwards or backwards. Do not allow

the guide bar to touch the blade (I). Tighten the screws to secure

the guide bar.

3. Grip the band saw by the auxiliary handle (C) and handle (G) before

starting the tool.

4. Ensure that a minimum of two sawblade teeth will remain in the

material during the cut to keep the blade straight and prevent

kickback.

5. Adjust the blade speed by turning the speed dial (E).

6. Squeeze the trigger (F).

7. Allow the band saw to reach full speed before starting the cut.

Maintain a firm grip on the tool with both hands to resist starting

torque.

8. Tilt the unit so that the blade is vertical. To start a cut, use minimal

force to start a groove. Once the groove is started, allow the rest of

the blade to cut into the workpiece. Doing this will prevent the

blade from moving from side-to-side during cutting. The tool’s own

weight provides the most efficient downward cutting pressure.

9. Carefully avoid bringing the band saw blade suddenly and heavily into

contact with the upper surface of the workpiece. This will cause

serious damage to the band saw blade. To obtain maximum service

life of the band saw blade, ensure there is no sudden impact at the

beginning of the cutting operation.

10. Hold the saw firmly in both hands so that the saw does not fall against

the clamped or supported material when the cut is completed.

11. Release the trigger to stop the saw.

CARE & MAINTENANCE

1. Maintain the tool with care. A tool in good condition is efficient,

easier to control and will have fewer problems.

2. Inspect the tool components periodically. Repair or replace

damaged or worn components. Only use identical replacement

parts when servicing.

3. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories.

4. Only use accessories intended for use with this tool.

5. Keep the tool clean, dry and free from oil/grease at all times.

6. Maintain the tool’s labels and name plates. These carry important

information. If unreadable or missing, contact Princess Auto Ltd. for

replacements.

7. Periodically remove chips from the dust cover and the surface of the

power tool with a damp cloth.

WARNING! Only qualified service personnel should repair the

tool. An improperly repaired tool may present a hazard to the

user and/or others.

CARBON BRUSH MAINTENANCE

The carbon brushes may require maintenance when the motor

performance of the tool decreases or stops working completely.

1. Remove the brush cap from the brush holder on each side of the

motor housing.

1.1 Some motor housings will only contain one carbon brush.

2. Remove the carbon brushes from the housing. Keep track of how

the carbon brushes are orientated during removal. The concave

surface must be oriented in the same way if the brushes are

reused. This will prevent unnecessary wear after reinstalling them.

3. Clean old carbon brushes before reinstalling them. Rub the contact

areas with a pencil eraser.

4. Reinsert the old carbon brushes in the same orientation to reduce wear.

5. Replace both carbon brushes if either is worn down more than 50

percent.

6. When installing the carbon brushes make sure the carbon portions

of the carbon brushes contact the motor armature and that the

springs face away from the motor. Also, make sure the springs

operate freely.

7. Replace the brush caps. Do not overtighten.

IMPORTANT! New carbon brushes tend to spark when first used

until they wear and conform to the motor's armature.

CLEANING

1. Clean dust and debris from the tool’s vents.

2. Only clean the tool with mild soap and a damp cloth.

3. Dry steel components and lubricate to prevent corrosion.

LUBRICATION

Inspect and lubricate the tool when required. Only use light oil to

lubricate the tool. Other lubricants may not be suitable and could

damage the tool or cause a malfunction during use.

When not in use for an extended period, apply a thin coat of lubricant to the

steel parts to avoid rust. Remove the lubricant before using the tool again.

DISPOSAL

Recycle a tool damaged beyond repair at the appropriate facility.

Contact your local municipality for a list of disposal facilities or by-laws for

electronic devices, batteries, oil or other toxic liquids.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Visit a Princess Auto Ltd. location for a solution if the tool does not

function properly or parts are missing. If unable to do so, have a

qualified technician service the tool.
