INTRODUCTION
The Gasoline Jackhammer/Post Driver is portable and lightweight with a powerful
2-stroke 32.6cc engine. Over 33 ft-lb of impact quickly breaks up concrete, asphalt,
masonry etc.
The post driver is used to drive grounding rods or square, round, U-channel and
‘T’ posts into the ground

WORK AREA
1. Operate in a safe work environment. Keep your work area clean, well-lit
and free of distractions.
2. Keep anyone not wearing the appropriate safety equipment away from the

3. Store unused tools properly in a safe and dry location to prevent rust or
damage. Lock tools away and keep out of the reach of children.
4. Do not install or use in the presence of flammable gases, dust or liquids.
PERSONAL SAFETY
WARNING! Wear personal protective equipment approved by the Canadian
Standards Association (CSA) or American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
1. Always wear impact safety goggles that provide front and side protection
for the eyes. Eye protection equipment should comply with CSA Z94.3-07
or ANSI Z87.1 standards based on the type of work performed.

2. Wear the appropriate type of full-face shield in addition to safety googles,
as the work can create chips, abrasive or particulate matter.
3. Wear gloves that provide protection based on the work materials or to
reduce the effects of tool vibration.
4. Wear protective clothing designed for the work environment and tool.
5. Non-skid footwear is recommended to maintain footing and balance in the
work environment.
6. Wear steel toe footwear or steel toe caps to prevent a foot injury from
falling objects.
7. Wear the appropriate rated dust mask or respirator.
8. This tool can cause hearing damage. Wear hearing protection gear with an
appropriate Noise Reduction Rating to withstand the decibel levels.
PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS
Control the tool, personal movement and the work environment to avoid
personal injury or damage to tool.
1. Do not operate any tool when tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol
or medications.
2. Avoid wearing clothes or jewelry that can become entangled with the
moving parts of a tool. Keep long hair covered or bound.
3. Do not overreach when operating a tool. Proper footing and balance
enables better control in unexpected situations.
4. Securely hold this tool using both hands. Using a tool with only one hand
can result in loss of control.
SPECIFIC SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

1. Use the correct tool for the job. This tool was designed for a specific function.
Do not modify or alter this tool or use it for an unintended purpose.
2. All users must understand the operation of all controls and learn how to
stop the engine quickly in case of emergency.

3. Do not tamper with governor spring, links or other engine parts to increase
speed or power.
4. The engine and exhaust become very hot during operation. Severe thermal
burns can occur on contact, especially with the muffler.
a. Remove accumulated debris from the muffler. Combustible debris,
such as leaves, grass, brush, etc. can catch fire if they come in
contact with a hot engine.
b. Allow muffler, engine cylinder and fins to cool before touching.
5. The manufacturer of the equipment on which this engine is installed
specifies the top speed at which the engine will operate. DO NOT exceed
this speed.
6. Check all the screws, nuts and bolts to make sure they are tight before
each use.
7. Do not use gasoline without mixing in two-stroke engine oil. This can
damage the engine.
8. Tighten the gas tank cap after refueling. Check frequently that fuel tank is
not damaged or leaking. Replace the fuel tank immediately if either
problem is discovered.
9. When using the tool in enclosed areas, such as tunnels, trenches and holes
ensure there is sufficient fresh air for the operator. Exhaust gas contains
carbon monoxide which could result in serious injury or death.
10. Leave the tool in idle for a few seconds before increasing speed or
stopping. Increasing to full throttle or stopping without idling can damage
the engine.
SPECIFIC SAFETY PRECAUTIONS - JACKHAMMER
1. Balance the tool when in use. Too sharp an angle and the jackhammer may
topple over or bounce. You may lose control of the tool.
2. Keep people away from the work area to avoid injury. The tool can cause
flying debris when in use.
3. Do not lean on the tool to try to create extra breaking force. The weight of
the tool itself creates the optimal breaking force to achieve high efficiency
and good results.

4. Do not use the tool to pry stones or bricks free. The tool is for crushing
and breaking work.
FUELING SAFETY
1. Mix and pour fuel outdoors in areas free of sparks and flames. Use a
container designed for fuel storage.
2. Do not expose to any ignition source. Both the fumes and fuel are flammable.
3. Wipe up all fuel spills before starting the tool
4. Stop the engine before removing the fuel tank cap.
5. Empty the fuel tank before storing the tool. Store the tool and fuel where
fuel vapors cannot reach sparks or open flames from appliances or
electrical switches/motors.
6. Before fueling, servicing or transporting your tool, switch off the engine.
To help prevent fire, restart your tool at least 3 m (10 ft) from the fueling area.
7. Allow your tool to cool before refueling.
8. Have a fire extinguisher available for immediate use. A dry chemical fire
extinguisher for Types A, B and C is suggested. Type B is required for
gasoline fires.
CARBON MONOXIDE
All gas appliances consume air (oxygen) and can produce carbon monoxide
which is toxic, has no odour and can cause death. Using a gas appliance in a
small and enclosed area can be harmful. Never use this appliance in a small and
enclosed area. Always have fresh air venting.
CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING
DANGER! Never operate a gas engine indoors or in a confined space as the
exhaust contains carbon monoxide gas. Inhalation of carbon monoxide gas
can lead to illness or death. The area must be well ventilated. Opening
windows and doors is not enough to ventilate an area.
Carbon monoxide is a colourless and odourless gas that is difficult to
detect. Carbon monoxide poisoning results from inhalation of the gas and
may be lethal if left untreated. Evacuate all people to an area with clean air
and seek immediate medical attention for any person experiencing the
following symptoms:

1. Headache
2. Confusion
3. Shortness of breath
4. Weakness
5. Chest pain

CUTTING TOOL PRECAUTIONS
1. Keep hands away from the work area.
2. Use the correct mounting hardware. The mounting hardware is designed to
hold the chisel/piling socket on the tool to allow optimum performance and
safety of operation. Mismatched mounting hardware may result in a tool
malfunction and cause an injury.
3. Do not carry the tool with fingers near or on the trigger/switch.
4. Avoid unintentional starts. Be sure that the ignition switch/trigger is in the
neutral or OFF position when not in use or before connecting it to any
power source.
5. Remove adjusting keys and wrenches from the tool before operation or
connecting it to a power source. A wrench or key that is left attached to a
rotating part of the tool increases the risk of personal injury.
VIBRATION PRECAUTIONS
1. This tool vibrates during use. Repeated or long-term exposure to vibration
may cause temporary or permanent physical injury. Take frequent breaks
when using the tool.
2. If you feel any medical symptoms related to vibrations (such as
tingling, numbness, and white or blue fingers), seek medical attention
as soon as possible.
3. Wear suitable gloves to reduce the effects of vibration.
4. DO NOT use this tool before consulting a physician if one of the following
applies:
a. Pregnant
b. Impaired blood circulation to
the hands
c. Past hand injuries
d. Nervous system disorders
e. Diabetes
f. Raynaud's Disease

UNPACKING
WARNING! Do not operate the tool if any part is missing. Replace the
missing part before operating. Failure to do so could result in a malfunction
and personal injury.
Remove the parts and accessories from the packaging and inspect for damage.
Make sure that all items in the parts list are included.

ASSEMBLY & INSTALLATION
Letter references in parenthesis (A) refer to the included Identification Key.
Dashed numbers in parenthesis (Fig. 1-1) refer to a specific point in an
illustration or image.
EXCHANGE THE POST DRIVER/CHISEL
The jackhammer/post driver has two options:
piling socket (Fig. 2-1) or the pointed chisel
(Fig. 2-2). Both require their own unique seat
attached to the cylinder block (P). The
procedure to install either is the same.
1. Lay the tool on its side.
2. Remove the chisel or piling socket.
3. Loosen and remove the bolts (G) holding the seat to the cylinder block
(P) and set aside.
4. Pull the seat from the cylinder and place aside.
5. Insert the other seat into the cylinder.
6. Reinsert the bolts and tighten to secure the seat against the cylinder.
7. Based on which seat is installed:
a. Screw the piling socket (H) onto the Cylinder Block (P) until firmly
seated.
b. Lubricate the butt of the chisel bit with grease and insert the chisel bit
into the housing until it is seated. Apply a thin layer of grease to the
chisel shaft if it doesn’t slide into the housing easily.
OPERATION
PREPARING THE TOOL FOR USE
1. Fill the gearbox (E) with grease (see Lubrication).
2. Fill the fuel tank (L) with the fuel/oil mixture (see Fuel and Fueling).
3. Clean the engine cooling fins and muffler (A) of any debris.
4. Clean the handles (D and F) of any oil or lubricants.

STARTING THE TOOL
CAUTION! Failure to follow the steps below will result in rapid retraction of
the starter cord faster than you can let go. This will pull your hand and arm
toward the engine, possibly resulting in an injury.
Check that the Throttle Handle (C) and stop button (B) are functioning.
1. Before starting the tool for the first time, press repeatedly on the
transparent fuel priming bubble to fill the carburetor (M) with fuel.
2. Move the choke lever (R) to the CLOSED position if the engine is cold. The
choke is unnecessary when starting a warm engine.
3. Lay the tool flat on the floor. Hold one handle (D) and pull the starter
handle (J) lightly until you feel resistance, then pull the starter handle
briskly. The engine should turn over and start running.
a. Do not allow the starter handle to snap back against the engine.
Instead, return the starter grip gently by hand.
4. If the engine floods, set the choke to the OPEN/RUN position, place the
throttle in FAST and attempt to start the engine again.
5. If the choke lever was moved to the CLOSED position to start the engine,
gradually move it to the OPEN position as the engine warms up.
STOPPING THE ENGINE
CAUTION! Do not choke carburetor to stop engine.
IN AN EMERGENCY
Press the red stop button (B).
DURING NORMAL USE
Stop the engine by following this procedure:
1. Release the throttling handle (C) and leave to idle for 3 to 5 minutes.
2. Press the red stop button.
OPERATING THE TOOL
1. Warm up the tool before the first use of the day or when left unused for a
time in cool temperatures. This may take several minutes.

2. Allow the engine to run at low speed for 2 to 3 minutes to preheat
the machine.
3. Hold the tool by the handle (D). The stop button (B) will be under your left
thumb and the throttle control (C) will be under your right-hand fingers.
OPERATING THE POST DRIVER
4. Insert the end of a post into the piling socket (H) until it is seated.
a. Place the piling socket (H) over the end of the post, if the post is already
in the ground.
5. Hold the tool by the grips on either side of the handle and raise the tool until it
is upright without letting the post slip out.
6. Position the post in the desired location.
7. Press the throttle lever (C) to begin driving the post into the ground.
a. Run the tool at lower speeds for the first 24 hours of use to extend
the engine’s lifespan.
8. Maintain a firm grip to prevent the tool from slipping or bouncing around
and causing an injury or unintended damage.
9. Apply just enough pressure to guide the tool. The tool’s own weight will
generate the force to drive the post into the ground.
10. Release the trigger when the job is complete.
OPERATING THE JACKHAMMER
WARNING! Chipping and breaking concrete and stone can create stone
chips. Wear protective eyewear and clothing while using the jackhammer.
Clear the area of bystanders unless they are also wearing personal
protective equipment.
4. When the engine is warm enough, adjust the throttle to the required speed.
a. Run the tool at lower speeds for the first 24 hours of use to extend
the engine’s lifespan.
b. For the best results and longest engine life run the tool at a medium
speed. Do not run the tool at high speed for non-breaking applications.
5. Place the tip against the workpiece at an angle away from yourself. This
will cause the bit to break the material apart as you move.

a. Do not hold the jackhammer straight up-and-down as the bit will
create a hole in the material instead of breaking it apart.
6. Press the throttle lever to start the tool.
7. Maintain a firm grip to prevent the chisel from slipping or bouncing around
and causing an injury or unintended damage.
8. Apply just enough pressure to guide the jackhammer. The tool’s own
weight will generate the force to break and demolish the workpiece.
9. Release the trigger when the job is complete.
CARE & MAINTENANCE
WARNING! Always ensure that the engine is off before you begin any
maintenance or repairs. An active engine part can cause a severe injury,
amputation or death if a mishap occurs
1. Maintain the tool with care. A tool in good condition is efficient, easier to
control and will have fewer problems.
2. Disconnect the spark plug lead and keep it away from the spark plug
during maintenance and repairs.
3. Inspect the tool components periodically. Check fuel lines, tank, cap and
fittings frequently for cracks or leaks. Repair or replace damaged or worn
components. Only use identical replacement parts when servicing.
4. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories.
5. Only use accessories intended for use with this tool.
6. Keep the tool handles clean, dry and free from oil/grease at all times.
7. Maintain the tool’s labels and name plates. These carry important information.
If unreadable or missing, contact Princess Auto Ltd. for replacements.
WARNING! Only qualified service personnel should repair the tool. An
improperly repaired tool may present a hazard to the user and/or others.
FUEL AND FUELING
Warning! Always shut the engine off and allow to cool before fuelling. Never
add fuel to a machine with a running or hot engine. Move at least 10 ft. from
the refuelling site before starting the engine to avoid an explosion or fire.

The tool is equipped with a two-stroke engine that runs on a mixture of gasoline
and two-stroke oil. It is important to accurately measure the amount of oil
mixed with gasoline to ensure the correct mixture ratio. When small amounts of
fuel are mixed, even small inaccuracy can dramatically affect the ratio.
1. Use only an approved fuel container
2. Do not allow open flames, parks or smoking near fuel.
3. Fuel cans may be under pressure due to temperature. Loosen fuel caps
slowly, allowing the pressure to equilibrate.
4. Do not fill fuel tanks indoor. Always fill fuel tanks outdoors over
bare ground.
5. Inspect for fuel leaks. Do not start until leakage is repaired.
MIXING 2-STROKE FUEL
DANGER! Fuel is very flammable. Use extreme care when mixing, storing or
handling fuel. An ignition source contacting the fumes or fuel may result in
a fire or explosion and cause fatal or serious injuries.
1. Gasoline – Use 89 Octane or higher gasoline.
a. Avoid gasoline containing alcohol such as gasohol when possible.
Gasohol containing up to 10% Ethyl alcohol is acceptable if necessary.
2. Two-stroke oil two-stroke engine oil must meet ISO-L-EGD
(ISO/CD 13738) and JASO FC standards.
3. Do not use pre-mixed gasoline/lubricant from fuel service stations. This
includes the pre-mixed gasoline/lubricant intended for use in mopeds,
motorcycles, etc.
MIXING INSTRUCTIONS
1. Gasoline to two-stroke oil ratio for this tool is 25 to 1.
a. A richer ratio of 20
to 1 is used for the
first 20 hours of use.
2. Fill an approved container
with half of the gasoline.
3. Add the proper amount of
two-stroke oil to the
gasoline per Table 1.

4. Close the container and shake to mix the oil with the gasoline.
5. Add remaining gasoline to the container, close and remix.
6. Mix in small quantities. Do not mix more fuel than can be used in a 30 day
period, 90 days if fuel stabilizer is added.
a. Fuel without an alcohol additive are less likely to form gum and
deposits and should not require a stabilizer.
HOW TO ADD FUEL
WARNING! Do not refuel the engine inside a building. Gasoline and its vapors
are extremely flammable and explosive. Keep gasoline away from appliance
pilot lights, barbecues, electric appliances, power tools, etc.
WARNING! Check for fuel leaks. If any are found, correct them before using
the tool to prevent fire or burn injury.
Do not use stale or contaminated gasoline or oil/gasoline mixture. Avoid getting
dirt or water in the fuel tank. It is normal for the engine to emit smoke during
and after the first use
1. Refuel outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.
2. Stop the engine and place it on a level surface.
3. Let engine cool at least 2 minutes before removing the fuel cap.
4. Clean the fuel cap area of dirt and debris. Remove the fuel cap slowly to
allow the pressure to equalize.
5. Check the fuel level.
6. Add fuel until it reaches the bottom of the fuel level limit marked in the fuel tank.
a. Fill the tank to approximately 1.5 in. (38 mm) below the top of the fuel
tank to allow for fuel expansion.
7. Take care to not overfill the tank. It may be necessary to lower the fuel level
depending on operating conditions.
8. Check fuel lines, tank, cap and fittings frequently for cracks or leaks.
Replace if necessary.
9. After refueling, hand-tighten the fuel tank cap securely.
10. Wipe up any spilled fuel before starting the engine or allow the fuel to
evaporate. Spilled fuel is both a fire hazard and an environmental hazard.

CARBURETOR
The gasoline/oil mixture can separate and clog the fuel line if left too long between
uses. This may cause an engine failure, if the tool is not used for more than a week.
1. Drain the fuel from the fuel tank.
2. Clean the oil out of the fuel line.
3. Refill the tank and remove the fuel line from the carburetor.
4. Repeatedly press the fuel priming bubble until all the oil is flushed from
fuel line into a suitable container for disposal.
5. Reattach the fuel line to the carburetor.
CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT
Never make adjustments to the carburetor. The carburetor was set at the factory
to operate efficiently under most conditions. Only a qualified service technician
should adjust the carburetor if it is required.
MODIFYING THE CARBURETOR FOR HIGH ALTITUDES
At high altitudes, the standard air-fuel mixture is too rich, causing increased fuel
consumption and decreased performance. A rich mixture will also foul the spark
plug and cause hard starting.
A qualified technician can improve high altitude performance with certain
modifications. Have your carburetor modified if the engine will routinely be
operated at altitudes above 5,000 ft (1,500 m). Even with carburetor
modification, engine horsepower will decrease about 3.5% for each 1,000 ft
(305 m) increase in altitude. The effect of altitude on horsepower will be greater
than this is if no modification is made.
NOTICE! When the carburetor has been modified for high altitude operation, the
air fuel mixture will be too lean for low altitude use. Operation at altitudes
below 5,000 ft (1,500 m) may cause the engine to overheat and result in serious
engine damage. When using this engine at low altitudes, have a qualified
technician return the carburetor to original factory specifications.
CLEANING THE SEDIMENT CUP
CAUTION! Wear latex or rubber gloves when working on the sediment cup.
The cup may contain fuel that will cause skin irritation. Prolonged and
repeated exposure to fuel on skin may result in dry, cracked skin.

1. Switch the fuel valve to the OFF position.
2. Remove the fuel sediment cup, screw and O-ring.
3. Clean the sediment cup with a non-flammable solvent or detergent and
rinse. Allow to dry.
a. Some chemicals will damage the o-ring material. Check for
compatibility or simply replace the o-ring.
4. Reassemble the sediment cup and o-ring.
5. Switch the fuel valve to the ON position and check for leaks. Replace the
o-ring if the installation is correct, but fuel still leaks from the cup.
AIR FILTER
Check the air filter (N) regularly. Dust blocking the cover of the air filter will
reduce engine power and can cause early cylinder failure. If the filter is very
dirty, wash in warm water with a mild detergent and wring dry. Once the filter is
dry apply a few drops of oil and work it into the filter. Replace the filter if it is
damaged.

FUEL FILTER
A clogged fuel filter will slow down an engine, causing the impact frequency and
force of the tool to also decrease.
1. Remove the fuel tank cap (K) and empty the fuel into a suitable container.
2. Pull out the fuel line with the fuel filter. A wire hook with a blunt end may
be required. Ensure that the fuel line is not punctured.
a. If unable to retrieve the fuel line and filter through the fuel tank
opening, remove the fuel tank from the tool to access the filter.
Reattach after replacing the filter.
3. Pull the spent filter off the fuel line.
4. Push the new filter onto the fuel line until the barbs are completely inserted.
5. Push the fuel line and filter back into the fuel tank. Position the fuel filter so
it is in the center of the tank where it can still draw fuel when the tool is in
different positions.
6. Pour the fuel back into the tank and replace the fuel tank cap.

REPLACING THE SPARK PLUG
NOTICE! Using an incorrect spark plug can cause engine damage. Only
replace a spark plug with a model recommended by the manufacturer.
The spark plug must be properly gapped and free of deposits for the best
performance. Check local bylaws to see if a resistor spark plug is required to
suppress ignition signals. Replace the included spark plug with a resistor spark
plug if required.
1. Remove any dirt from around the spark plug area.
2. Unclip the spark plug lead and remove the spark plug with a spark plug
wrench. This will have a rubber pad inside the socket to protect the spark
plug’s ceramic coating.
3. Inspect the spark plug. Replace it if damaged, badly fouled, the sealing
washer is in poor condition or the electrode is worn.
4. Check the gap with a spark plug gauge as shown in Figure 2. If necessary,
reset the gap (See Specifications).
a. Correct the gap by carefully bending the side electrode. Check the gap
after each adjustment.
5. Install the spark plug carefully by hand to avoid
cross threading.
6. Tighten the spark plug to the recommended
torque until the gasket is compressed. See
Specifications for the correct torque rating.
a. Tighten an additional 1/2 to 1/3 turn more
with a spark plug wrench if the torque
rating isn’t available.
7. Reconnect the spark plug lead to the spark plug.
CLEANING
WARNING! Use only a nonflammable solvent, not gasoline, to clean engine
parts. Keep all sources of ignition away from fuel related parts. Fumes are
flammable and may catch fire, causing a burn injury.
NOTICE! Do not clean the engine’s exterior with a garden hose or pressure
washer. Water can enter the engine through the air filter or muffler opening
and damage the cylinder.

1. Allow engine to cool for at least half an hour before cleaning.
2. Clean all exterior surfaces.
a. Check the cylinder fins periodically for dirt, dust and wood chips that
can interfere with proper cooling. Clogged fins can cause overheating
and as a result, lower power output. Remove debris between fins with
compressed air or brush.
3. Regularly remove build-up of carbon deposits on the muffler with a
wire brush.
4. Touch up any damaged paint.
5. Coat other areas that may rust with a light film of oil.
MAINTENANCE
The maintenance schedule applies to normal operating conditions. If you operate
your engine under severe conditions, such as sustained high-load or high-
temperature operation or use in unusually wet or dusty conditions, consult a
qualified technician for recommendations applicable to your individual needs and
use. See Maintenance Schedule in Appendix A.
LUBRICATION
Fill the gearbox with grease before using. Use Shell Gadus S3 V220C 2 Grease
(SKU 8540627). Follow the maintenance schedule and refill the gearbox with
grease when low.
1. Open the gearbox cover (O).
2. Lubricate the gear and the connecting rod with grease.
3. Open the hammer base, lubricate the piston and impact hammer with grease.
4. Reseal the gearbox cover.
STORAGE
DANGER! Fuel is very flammable. Use extreme care when handling or storing
fuel. An ignition source contacting the fumes or fuel may result in a fire or
explosion and cause fatal or serious injuries to you or a bystander.
When not in use for an extended period, apply a thin coat of lubricant to the
steel parts to avoid rust. Remove the lubricant before using the engine again.

Proper storage preparation is essential for keeping your engine in good condition.
The steps below will help keep rust and corrosion from impairing your engine’s
function and appearance. The engine will easier to start when used again.
Take the following precautions if storing your engine for more than 30 days.
Store in a clean dry area.
Change the oil while the engine is still warm.
Clean the debris, chaff or grass from the engine’s surface.
Drain all fuel from the fuel tank into a proper receptacle for storage.
Disconnect the spark plug lead and cover the end with insulating tape.
Place the lead where it cannot come in contact with spark plug or the
equipment the engine is mounted on.
Remove the spark plug. Place 1 tsp (5 ml) of oil into the spark plug hole.
Pull starter rope slowly 8-10 times to properly coat the cylinder bore and piston
for storage. Replace spark plug and tighten. Any residual oil will burn off in
subsequent starts. This may result in white smoke emission from muffler.
Store this engine in the horizontal position with the spark plug up. Do not
store or transport with the spark plug down.
NOTE: Storing or transporting with the spark plug down will result in hard
starting and/or engine smoking.
STORING ENGINE WITH FUEL
1. If your engine will be stored with gasoline in the fuel tank and carburetor, it
is important to reduce the hazard of gasoline vapour ignition.
a. Select a well-ventilated storage area away from any appliance that
operates with a flame, such as a furnace, water heater or clothes dryer.
b. Avoid any area with a spark-producing electric motor.
c. Avoid any area where power tools are operated.
2. If possible, avoid storage areas with high humidity, as this promotes rust
and corrosion.
3. Keep the engine level in storage. Tilting can cause fuel or oil leakage.
4. Cover the engine once the engine and exhaust system are cool. Some
materials can ignite or melt if the engine and/or exhaust system is hot. Do
not use sheet plastic as a dust cover.
a. Use a cover made from a breathable fabric to prevent rust and corrosion.

5. Store with gasoline that does not contain ethanol or a similar alcohol-
based fuel additive. Fuel with alcohol-based additives may Phase Separate
into gasoline, alcohol and water when stored for more than a few weeks.
FUEL
IMPORTANT! Avoid fuel phase separation by using premium quality fuel of at
least 89 octane.
Gasoline with ethanol or alcohol-based additives may phase separate and
deteriorate in storage. Phase separated gasoline will cause hard starting and leave
gum deposits that clog the fuel system. Phase separated fuel will contain water that
will prevent the engine from working and may damage the engine systems. If that
gasoline in your engine deteriorates during storage, you may need to have the
carburetor and other fuel system components serviced or replaced.
The length of time that gasoline can be left in your fuel tank and carburetor without
causing functional problems will vary with factors such as gasoline blend, storage
temperatures and the amount of fuel in the tank. The air in a partially filled fuel tank will
promote fuel deterioration, as will warm storage temperatures. Fuel problems may
occur in a few months or sooner if the gasoline was not fresh when the tank was filled.
Adding a gasoline stabilizer that is formulated for this purpose can extend fuel
storage life. Deterioration problems can also be avoided by draining the fuel tank
and carburetor prior to storage.
ADDING A GASOLINE STABILIZER
1. Fill the fuel tank with fresh gasoline. If the tank is only partially filled, air in
the tank will promote fuel deterioration during storage.
2. Add gasoline stabilizer. Ensure that the instructions for that product
are followed.
3. Run the engine outdoors for ten minutes to ensure that treated gasoline
has replaced the untreated gasoline in the carburetor.
4. Stop the engine.
REMOVAL FROM STORAGE
1. Check the engine for damage or wear.
2. If the fuel was drained during storage preparation, fill the tank with
fresh gasoline.
