(see Carbon Monoxide Precautions).
1. Make sure spark plug, air cleaner, fuel cap and muer are in place and
secured.
2. Ensure the spark plug lead is securely connected to the spark plug,
otherwise unintentional sparking can result, causing a re or electric
shock.
3. Check the air lter. A dirty air lter will reduce engine performance.
4. Check that all protective covers and guards are in place.
5. Check that all nuts, bolts and screws are tight.
6. Check the fuel level.
7. Check the engine oil level. Running the engine without enough oil can
damage the engine.
8. Look around and underneath the engine for signs of oil or gasoline leaks.
Do not start the engine until any spilled fuel has evaporated.
9. Remove any excessive dirt or debris, especially around the muer and
recoil starter.
10. Look for signs of damage.
11. Check the equipment powered by this engine.
12. Review the instructions provided with the equipment powered by this
engine for precautions and procedures that should be followed before

ENGINE MAINTENANCE
The following section includes a maintenance schedule, routine inspection
procedures and simple maintenance procedures using basic hand tools. Service
tasks that are more dicult or require special tools are best handled by a
technician or other qualied mechanic.
8937278 VERTICAL SHAFT GAS ENGINE V1.0
www.princessauto.com / 1-800-665-8685 Page 8
1. Maintain the engine with care. A well-maintained engine is more ecient
and less likely to have problems.
2. Follow instructions for servicing.
3. Inspect the engine components periodically. Check fuel lines, tank, cap
and ttings frequently for cracks or leaks. Have damaged or worn
components repaired or replaced by an authorized technician.
4. Replacement parts must match the original. Use manufacturer
recommended parts when possible.
5. Disconnect the spark plug lead and keep it away from the spark plug
during maintenance and repairs.
6. Maintain the engine’s label and name plate. These carry important
information. If unreadable or missing, contact Princess Auto Ltd. for
replacements.
WARNING! Only qualied service personnel should repair the engine.
STORAGE
DANGER! Fuel is very ammable. Use extreme care when handling or
storing fuel. An ignition source contacting the fumes or fuel can result
in a re or explosion and cause fatal or serious injuries to you or a
bystander.
When not in use for an extended period, apply a thin coat of lubricant to the
steel parts to avoid rust. Remove the lubricant before using the engine again.
Proper storage preparation is essential for keeping your engine in good
condition. The steps below will help keep rust and corrosion from impairing
your engine’s function and appearance. The engine will easier to start when
used again.
Take the following precautions if storing your engine for more than 30 days.
Store in a clean dry area.
Change the oil while the engine is still warm.
Clean debris from the engine’s surface.
Drain all fuel from the fuel tank into a proper receptacle for storage.
Disconnect the spark plug lead and cover the end with insulating tape.
Place the lead where it cannot come in contact with the spark plug or the
equipment the engine is mounted on.
V1.0 VERTICAL SHAFT GAS ENGINE 8937278
Page 9 www.princessauto.com / 1-800-665-8685
Remove the spark plug. Place 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of oil into the spark plug
hole.
Pull starter rope slowly 8 to 10 times to properly coat the cylinder bore and
piston for storage. Replace spark plug and tighten. Any residual oil will burn
o in subsequent starts. The muer may emit white smoke.
Store this engine in the horizontal position with the spark plug up. Do not
store or transport with the spark plug down. Storing or transporting with the
spark plug down will result in hard starting and/or engine smoking.
FUEL STORAGE
Gasoline will oxidize and deteriorate in storage. Deteriorated gasoline makes it
harder to start the engine and leaves gum deposits that clog the fuel system.
If that gasoline in your engine deteriorates during storage, you may need to
service or replace the carburetor and other fuel system components.
The length of time that gasoline can be left in your fuel tank and carburetor
without causing functional problems will vary with factors such as gasoline
blend, storage temperatures and the amount of fuel in the tank. The air in
a partially lled fuel tank will promote fuel deterioration, as will very warm
storage temperatures. Fuel problems may occur in a few months, or sooner if
the gasoline was not fresh when the tank was lled.
Adding a gasoline stabilizer that is formulated for this purpose can extend fuel
storage life. Deterioration problems can also be avoided by draining the fuel
tank and carburetor prior to storage.
ADDING A GASOLINE STABILIZER
1. Fill the fuel tank with fresh gasoline. If the tank is only partially lled, air
in the tank will promote fuel deterioration during storage.
2. Add gasoline stabilizer. Ensure that the instructions for that product are
followed.
3. Run the engine outdoors for 10 minutes to ensure that treated gasoline
has replaced the untreated gasoline in the carburetor.
4. Stop the engine.
STORING THE ENGINE WITH FUEL
WARNING! Keep the engine away from ignition sources such as sparks,
the open ame of a pilot light when storing with fuel in the tank. An
ignition source can ignite gasoline vapours.
8937278 VERTICAL SHAFT GAS ENGINE V1.0
www.princessauto.com / 1-800-665-8685 Page 10
1. If your engine will be stored with gasoline in the fuel tank and carburetor,
it is important to reduce the hazard of gasoline vapour ignition.
a. Select a well-ventilated storage area away from any appliance that
operates with a ame, such as a furnace, water heater, or clothes
dryer.
b. Avoid any area with a spark-producing electric motor.
c. Avoid any area where power tools are operated.
2. If possible, avoid storage areas with high humidity, as this promotes rust
and corrosion.
3. Keep the engine level in storage. Tilting can cause fuel or oil leakage.
4. Cover the engine once the engine and exhaust system is cool. Some
materials can ignite or melt if the engine and/or exhaust system is hot. Do
not use sheet plastic as a dust cover.
Use a cover made from a breathable fabric to prevent rust and
corrosion.
5. Store with gasoline that does not contain ethanol or a similar alcohol-
based fuel additive. Fuel with alcohol-based additives may phase separate
into gasoline, alcohol and water when stored for more than a few weeks.
REMOVAL FROM STORAGE
1. Check the engine as described in the section Operation - Before Starting
the Engine.
2. Fill the tank with fresh gasoline if the fuel was drained during storage
preparation.
3. An engine cylinder coated with oil during storage preparation will smoke
briey at start up. This is normal.
TRANSPORTING
WARNING! Transport the engine with an empty fuel tank or with the
fuel valve lever secured in the OFF position. Keep the engine level when
transporting to reduce the possibility of fuel leakage.
1. Keep the engine level when transporting to reduce the possibility of fuel
