IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
Read and save this instruction manual. Keep it with the charger at all times.
CAUTION: The charger must be fully assembled before operating. Refer to “Assembly
Instructions,” page 6 for instructions.
1. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS—This manual contains important safety and operating
instructions for battery charger models CBC 7600 and CBC 7700.
2. Use of an attachment not recommended or sold by the battery charger manufacturer may
result in a risk of re, electric shock, or injury to persons.
3. To reduce risk of damage to electric plug and cord, pull by plug rather than cord when
disconnecting charger.
4. An extension cord should not be used unless absolutely necessary. Use of improper extension
cord could result in a risk re and electric shock. If extension cord must be used, make sure:
a) That pins on plug of extension cord are the same number, size, and shape as those of plug
on charger;
b) That extension cord is properly wired and in good electrical condition; and
c) That wire size is large enough for AC ampere rating of charger as specied in the
following table:
5. Do not operate charger with damaged cord or plug. Replace the cord or plug immediately.
6. WARNING: Handling the cord on this product or cords associated with accessories sold
with this product, may expose you to lead, a chemical known to the State of California to
cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling.
7. Do not operate charger if it has received a sharp blow, been dropped, or otherwise damaged
in any way. Take it to a qualied serviceman.

8. Do not disassemble charger. Take it to a qualied serviceman when service or repair is
required. Incorrect reassembly may result in a risk of electric shock or re.
9. To reduce risk of electric shock, unplug charger from outlet before attempting any
maintenance or cleaning. Turning off controls will not reduce this risk.
WARNING: RISK OF EXPLOSIVE GASES
1. WORKING IN VICINITY OF A LEAD-ACID BATTERY IS DANGEROUS. BATTERIES
GENERATE EXPLOSIVE GASES DURING NORMAL BATTERY OPERATION. FOR
THIS REASON, IT IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE THAT EACH TIME BEFORE USING
YOUR CHARGER, YOU READ THIS MANUAL AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS
EXACTLY.
2. To reduce risk of battery explosion, follow these instructions and those published by battery
manufacturer and manufacturer of any equipment you intend to use in vicinity of battery.
Review cautionary markings on these products and on engine.
PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS
1. Someone should be within range of your voice or close enough to come to your aid when you
work near a lead-acid battery.
2. Have plenty of fresh water and soap nearby in case battery acid contacts skin, clothing, or
eyes.
3. Wear complete eye protection and clothing protection. Avoid touching eyes while working
near battery.
4. If battery acid contacts skin or clothing, wash immediately with soap and water. If acid enters
eye, immediately ood eye with running cold water for at least 10 minutes and get medical
attention immediately.
5. NEVER smoke or allow a spark or ame in vicinity of battery or engine.
6. Be extra cautious to reduce risk of dropping a metal tool onto battery. It might spark or short-
circuit battery or other electrical part that may cause explosion.
7. Remove personal metal items, such as rings, bracelets, necklaces, and watches, when
working with a lead-acid battery. A lead-acid battery can produce a short-circuit current high
enough to weld a ring or the like to metal, causing a severe burn.
8. Use charger for charging a LEAD-ACID battery only. It is not intended to supply power to
a low voltage electrical system other than in a starter-motor application. Do not use battery
charger for charging dry-cell batteries that are commonly used with home appliances. These
batteries may burst and cause injury to persons and damage to property.
9. NEVER charge a frozen battery.

PREPARING TO CHARGE
1. If necessary to remove battery from vehicle to charge, always remove grounded terminal
from battery rst. Make sure all accessories in the vehicle are off, so as not to cause an arc.
2. Be sure area around battery is well ventilated while battery is being charged. Gas can be
forcefully blown away by using a piece of cardboard or other nonmetallic material as a fan.
3. Clean battery terminals. Be careful to keep corrosion from coming in contact with eyes.
4. Add distilled water in each cell until battery acid reaches level specied by battery
manufacturer. This helps purge excessive gas from cells. Do not overll. For a battery
without cell caps, carefully follow manufacturers recharging instructions.
5. Study all battery manufacturers specic precautions, such as removing or not removing cell
caps while charging and recommended rates of charge.
6. Determine voltage of battery by referring to car owners manual and make sure that output
voltage selector switch is set at correct voltage. If charger has adjustable charge rate, charge
battery initially at lowest rate.
CHARGER LOCATION
1. Locate charger as far away from battery as DC cables permit.
2. Never place charger directly above battery being charged. Gases from battery will corrode
and damage charger.
3. Never allow battery acid to drip on charger when reading gravity or lling battery.
4. Do not operate charger in a closed-in area or restrict ventilation in any way.
5. Do not set a battery on top of charger.
DC CONNECTION PRECAUTIONS
1. Connect and disconnect DC output clips only after setting any charger switches to off
position and removing AC cord from electric outlet. Never allow clips to touch each other.
2. Attach clips to battery and chassis, as indicated on page 4 in “Follow these steps when
battery is installed in vehicle,” steps 5 and 6, and in “Follow these steps when battery is
outside vehicle,” steps 2 and 4.

FOLLOW THESE STEPS WHEN BATTERY IS INSTALLED IN VEHICLE.
A SPARK NEAR BATTERY MAY CAUSE BATTERY EXPLOSION. TO
REDUCE RISK OF A SPARK NEAR BATTERY:
1. Position AC and DC cords to reduce risk of damage by hood, door, or moving engine part.
2. Stay clear of fan blades, belts, pulleys, and other parts that can cause injury to persons.
3. Check polarity of battery posts. POSITIVE (POS, P, +) battery post usually has larger
diameter than NEGATIVE (NEG, N, -) battery post.
4. Determine which post of battery is grounded (connected) to the chassis. If negative post
is grounded to chassis (as in most vehicles), see step 5. If positive post is grounded to the
chassis, see step 6.
5. For negative-grounded vehicle, connect POSITIVE (RED) clip from battery charger to
POSITIVE (POS, P, +) ungrounded post of battery. Connect NEGATIVE (BLACK) clip to
vehicle chassis or engine block away from battery. Do not connect clip to carburetor, fuel
lines, or sheet-metal body parts. Connect to a heavy gage metal part of the frame or engine
block.
6. For positive-grounded vehicle, connect NEGATIVE (BLACK) clip from battery charger
to NEGATIVE (NEG, N, -) ungrounded post of battery. Connect POSITIVE (RED) clip to
vehicle chassis or engine block away from battery. Do not connect clip to carburetor, fuel
lines, or sheet-metal body parts. Connect to a heavy gage metal part of the frame or engine
block.
7. When disconnecting charger, turn switches to off, disconnect AC cord, remove clip from
vehicle chassis, and then remove clip from battery terminal.
8. See “Determining Charging Time,” page 9 for length of charge information.
FOLLOW THESE STEPS WHEN BATTERY IS OUTSIDE VEHICLE. A
SPARK NEAR THE BATTERY MAY CAUSE BATTERY EXPLOSION. TO
REDUCE RISK OF A SPARK NEAR BATTERY:
1. Check polarity of battery posts. POSTIVE (POS, P, +) battery post usually has a larger
diameter than NEGATIVE (NEG, N, -) post.
2. Attach at least a 24-inch, 6-gauge (AWG) insulated battery cable to NEGATIVE (NEG, N, -)
battery post.
3. Connect POSTIVE (RED) charger clip to POSITIVE (POS, P, +) post of battery.
4. Position yourself and free end of cable as far away from battery as possible. Then connect
NEGATIVE (BLACK) charger clip to free end of cable.

5. Do not face battery when making nal connection.
6. When disconnecting charger, always do so in reverse sequence of connecting procedure and
break rst connection while as far away from battery as practical.
7. A marine (boat) battery must be removed and charged on shore. To charge it on board
requires equipment specially designed for marine use.
GROUNDING AND AC POWER CORD CONNECTION
Charger should be grounded to reduce risk of electric shock. Charger is equipped with an electric
cord having an equipment-grounding conductor and a grounding plug. The plug must be plugged
into an outlet that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and
ordinances.
DANGER: Never alter AC cord or plug provided. If it will not t outlet, have proper outlet
installed by a qualied electrician. Improper connection can result in a risk of an electric shock.
This battery charger is for use on a nominal, 120-volt circuit, and has a grounding plug that
looks like the plug illustrated in (A) below. A temporary adapter, which looks like the adapter
illustrated in (B) and (C), may be used to connect this plug to a two-pole receptacle, as shown
in (B), if a properly grounded outlet is not available. The temporary adapter should be used only
until a properly grounded outlet can be installed by a qualied electrician.
DANGER: Before using adapter as illustrated, be certain that center screw of outlet plate is
grounded. The green-colored rigid ear or lug extending from adapter must be connected to a
properly grounded outlet. Make certain it is grounded. If necessary, replace original outlet cover
plate screw with a longer screw that will secure adapter ear or lug to outlet cover plate and make
ground connection to grounded outlet.

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
CAUTION: You must attach the handle before operating the charger.

ATTACHING THE HANDLE
To attach the charger handle:
1. Locate the handle and four screws provided. The charger comes with one of two types of
handles.
2. Remove the top two screws at the rear from both sides of the charger.
3. Straddle the handle over the charger and align the mounting holes. If the charger has the Type
2 handle, make sure the handle is ush with the edge of the charger. Refer to the drawing
below.
4. Attach the handle with the four screws and tighten securely.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
CAUTION: The charger must be fully assembled before operating. Refer to “Assembly
Instructions,” page 6 for instructions.
The Professional Charger and Starter models CBC 7600 and CBC 7700 charge lead-acid
batteries. You can use the chargers to:
charge a discharged battery
perform an engine start to a discharged battery
The CBC 7700 produces a higher current than the CBC 7600 for the normal charge, fast charge,
and engine start. It also contains a voltmeter.
CONTROLS
AMMETER
The AMMETER shows the amount of amps owing from the charger to the battery.
CHARGE is the green area with normal charging current.
START is the red area with high current for engine crank-assist. For more information about
engine crank-assist, refer to “Engine Start,” page 8.
VOLTMETER (CBC 7700 only)
The VOLTMETER shows the battery voltage and percentage of the state of charge.
TIMER
The TIMER switch is on the upper right of the charger.
OFF disconnects the output of the charger.
HOLD is for charging times longer than 120 minutes.
RATE/VOLTAGE CONTROL
The RATE/VOLTAGE CONTROL switch is on the upper left of the charger. It controls the
voltage and current.
SLOW CHARGE is 15 A for 12 V batteries.
FAST CHARGE is 35 A for 24 V batteries or 65 A (70 A for CBC 7700) for 6 V batteries.
MEDIUM CHARGE is 30 A for 12 V batteries.
FAST CHARGE is 65 A (70 A for CBC 7700) for 12 V and parallel batteries. Do not use on
small, low capacity batteries.
ENGINE START is 275 A (300 A for CBC 7700) for cranking or starting an engine with 12
V battery.

FEATURES
ENGINE START
The ENGINE START setting on the RATE/VOLTAGE CONTROL switch provides high current
to crank-assist or start a vehicle with a discharged battery. This feature helps you start the vehicle
to drive it to a location for service.
OVERLOAD PROTECTION
The charger uses output circuit and thermal breakers to prevent overheating and damage to the
charger and vehicle.
DETERMINING THE STATE OF CHARGE
The state of charge is a percentage of the battery charge at a certain temperature. To determine
the state of charge, use a hydrometer, voltmeter, or battery analyzer, depending on the type of
battery you are charging.
NOTE: For the CBC 7700, you can use the percentage scale on the voltmeter as the state of
charge.
For a rellable-top battery, use a hydrometer. A hydrometer is a syringe that takes battery acid
from battery cells to indicate the gravity of the battery acid. The gravity indicates the battery
state of charge at a temperature. The table below shows the state of charge for different gravity
readings:
**Initial gravity readings vary with the battery type and manufacturer.
Contact the battery seller or manufacturer for this information.
For a sealed-top (maintenance-free and recombination) battery, use a high-resolution voltage
battery analyzer.
For any type of battery, use a battery analyzer.
For more information about the type of battery you are charging or how to check the state of
charge, contact the battery seller or manufacturer.

2. Move across the row until you nd the amperage for the type of battery you are charging.
Refer to “Controls,” page 7 for the amp values.
The number of hours or minutes is the amount of time you need to charge the battery.
WARNING: High amperage rates might boil and overcharge the battery. Do not leave the
charger unattended. Refer to the battery manufacturer charging instructions.

NOTE: The temperature of the battery and the equipment the battery is used with has an effect
on battery efciency and system power requirements. For example, at 0
o
F (-18
o
C), a battery is
operating at 40% of its rated efciency, while the engine requires over twice the power at 80
o
F
(27
o
F).
DETERMINING CHARGING TIME
To determine charging time for the battery, you can use a chart or a formula.
To use the chart:
1. Locate the state of charge (SOC) percentage, reserve capacity (RC), and voltage in the
table below for the type of battery you are charging.
To use the formula:
(reserve capacity in minutes) + 15.5 = amp hour capacity

(amp hour capacity) x (percent of charge needed) = time in hrs.

(time in hours) x (recharge factor of 1.25) = recharge time
Example: A battery has an reserve capacity of 120 minutes and is discharged 25%. It needs a
75% charge at 40 A:
120 minutes + 15.5 = 75.5 amp hours

(75.5 amp hours) x (0.75) = time = 1.4 hours
40-amp charge rate
Then (1.4 hours) x (recharge factor of 1.25) = 1.76 hours or 106 minutes of recharge time.
CONNECTING TO THE CHARGER
To connect to the charger:
1. Make sure the charger is unplugged.
2. Turn the TIMER switch to OFF.
3. Do one of the following based on where the battery is located:
If the battery is installed in a vehicle, refer to “Follow these steps when battery is
installed in vehicle,” page 4.
If the battery is outside of the vehicle (not installed), refer to “Follow these steps when
battery is outside vehicle,” page 4.
4. Plug in the charger. Refer to the safety instructions in “Grounding and AC power cord
connection,” page 5.
5. Set the RATE/VOLTAGE CONTROL switch to match the voltage of the battery you are
charging.
6. Turn the TIMER switch to the charge time you determined in the table on page 9.
CAUTION: Monitor the battery for leaking uid or excessive heat. These conditions can damage
the battery. If the battery gets too hot or spews uid, reduce the charge rate or replace the battery.

CHECKING THE CHARGED BATTERY
To check the battery you charged:
1. Turn the TIMER to OFF.
2. Unplug the charger.
3. Disconnect the charger clamps.
4. Start the vehicle.
5. If the vehicle does not start after a few attempts, do the steps under “Performing an engine
start” or replace the battery.
NOTE: Before replacing the battery, use a battery analyzer to test it. If the battery is discharged
and still useful, determine if the starting and charging systems are normal.
PERFORMING AN ENGINE START
The engine start powers a vehicle with a discharged battery. You can use this feature when the
battery in a vehicle does not have enough capacity to start the engine.
To do an engine start:
1. Turn the RATE/VOLTAGE CONTROL switch on the charger to a fast charge setting
(30–70 A).
2. Charge the battery for ve minutes.
3. Select ENGINE START and set the TIMER switch to HOLD.
4. Start the engine with the ignition key.
When the engine starts, the alternator in the vehicle charges the battery as long as the
engine runs so the engine starts by itself the next time.
NOTE: The engine might not start on its own the next time you start the vehicle, even if
it starts and runs from this procedure. If it does not, you might have a bad battery.
5. If the engine does not start in three to ve seconds:
a) Stop cranking.
b) Turn the RATE/VOLTAGE CONTROL switch to the fast charge setting (30–70 A).
c) Charge battery for ve minutes.

6. If the engine does not start after a second or third attempt, disconnect the charger and
replace the battery.
NOTE: Before replacing the battery, use a battery analyzer to test it. If the battery is
discharged and still useful, determine if the starting and charging systems are normal.
CAUTION: Do not start a vehicle if the battery is not installed properly. Damage might occur to
the electrical system.
CHARGING MULTIPLE BATTERIES
PARALLEL CHARGING
You can charge batteries of the same type and voltage rating by connecting them in parallel.
Charging two batteries in parallel takes twice as long. Charge time increases with the number
of batteries. Rate of charge decreases with the number of batteries. Each battery receives 1/2
the amount of charge on the ammeter. For example, if the ammeter shows 40 A, each battery is
receiving a 20 A charge.
SERIES CHARGING
You can charge batteries of the same type and voltage by connecting them in a series. The
RATE/VOLTAGE CONTROL switch is the sum of the voltages and current through the
batteries. This number is the amount of charge on the ammeter.
For example, charging two 12 V batteries in a series requires a 24 V setting on the RATE/
VOLTAGE CONTROL switch. If the ammeter shows 30 A, each battery is receiving a 30 A
charge.

MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
The charger contains high quality materials requiring minimal care. For repairs, contact a service
technician.
To maintain the parts to the charger:
Clean the clamps after you use the charger to prevent corrosion from battery uid.
Coil the cords when the charger is not used to prevent damage.
TROUBLESHOOTING
NOTE: Cold, sulphated, or damaged batteries can vary readings.
NO METER READING
Make sure the AC outlet is live.
Check connections to the battery.
Refer to “Performing an engine start,” page 11. A breaker might have opened. The output
breaker pops when it opens and resets automatically in a few minutes. The thermal breaker
resets automatically in about 15–30 seconds.
HIGH METER READING
Make sure the battery connections are not reversed.
Replace the battery. The battery might have dead cells.

representative. This limited warranty is void if the product is misused, subjected to careless
handling, or repaired by anyone other than the factory or other authorized factory representative.

6. Faites très attention pour réduire le risque de chute dun outil en métal sur la batterie. Cela
pourrait produire des étincelles ou un court-circuit dans la batterie ou dans une autre pièce
