BASIC AIR COMPRESSOR COMPONENTS
Oil free air compressors are factory lubricated for life and do not require any oil.
The basic components of the air compressor are the electric motor, pump,
pressure switch and tank.
The electric motor (A) powers the pump. The electric
motor is equipped with an overload protector and an
automatic reset. If the motor becomes overheated,
the overload protector will shut it down to prevent
damage to the motor. When the motor sufficiently
cools, it will automatically reset.
The pump (A) compresses the air and discharges it
into the tank.
The tank (B) stores the compressed air.
The pressure switch (C) shuts down the motor when the
air pressure in the tank reaches the cut-out pressure. As
compressed air is used and the pressure level in the tank
drops to the cut-in pressure, the pressure switch restarts
the motor automatically, without warning and the pump
resumes compressing air.
COMPRESSOR CONTROLS
A. AUTO/OFF SWITCH
This switch turns on the compressor. It is operated manually, but when in
the AUTO position, it allows the compressor to start up or shut down
automatically, without warning, upon air demand. ALWAYS set this switch to
OFF when the compressor is not being used, and before unplugging the
compressor.
B. PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE
The air compressor is equipped with a pressure relief valve that is designed to
discharge tank pressure at a predetermined setting when a systems failure
occurs. Check the pressure valve periodically by pulling on the ring only when
Fig. 1
V0.1 20 Gallon Portable Air Compressor 8474983
Visit www.princessauto.com for more information 9
the tank pressure is completely drained. The spring
loaded valve should move freely within the
pressure valve body. An inoperable pressure valve
could allow an excessive amount of tank pressure
to build causing the air tank to catastrophically
rupture or explode.
Do not tamper with or attempt to eliminate the
pressure relief valve.
C. TANK PRESSURE GAUGE
This gauge measures the pressure level of the air
stored in the tank. It is not adjustable by the
operator, and does not indicate line pressure.
D. AIR PRESSURE REGULATOR
This air pressure regulator enables you to adjust line pressure to the tool
you are using. Turn the knob clockwise to increase pressure, and
counterclockwise to decrease pressure.
E. REGULATED PRESSURE GAUGE
This gauge measures the regulated outlet pressure.
F. AIR LINE OUTLET
Connect an air hose to this outlet.
ASSEMBLY & INSTALLATION
Letter references in parenthesis (A) refer to the
included Identification Key.
1. Remove the compressor from the carton and
place it on the floor or a hard, level surface.
The compressor must be level to ensure
proper drainage of the moisture in the tank.
2. The wheels are disassembled. Remove 2
wheels (D), 2 bolts (E), washers (F) and 2 nuts
(G) from the bag and install them on the foot
section of the tank as shown in (see Fig. 4).
3. Install the handle by placing the handle ends
(B) onto the base and secure with the bolts
(C) provided (see Fig. 4). Tighten bolts using a
13 mm socket or wrench (not included).

OPERATION
PRE-START CHECKLIST
1. Always operate the compressor in a level position to allow the tank to drain.
2. Inspect/clean/change intake elements on a regular basis. The ingestion
of dirt into the pump is the primary cause of premature wear. Check
intake filters daily.
3. Check tension of bolts and hardware on a regular basis. Operation of
any equipment with loose bolts and/or fittings will lead to excessive
vibration and the premature failure of the compressor system control
components.
4. Drain moisture from the air tank daily. Water is a natural by-product of
compressed air. Drain the air tank after each use to combat internal
tank corrosion. Keep drain valves open if storing compressor for any
length of time.
DAILY START UP
WARNING! High temperatures are generated by the electric motor and the
pump. To prevent burns or other injuries, DO NOT touch the compressor
while it is running. Allow it to cool before handling or servicing. Keep
children away from the compressor at all times.
WARNING! When adjusting from a higher to a lower pressure, turn the knob
anticlockwise past the desired setting, then turn clockwise to reach the desired
pressure. Do not exceed operating pressure of the tool or accessory being used.
1. Turn the pressure switch to the OFF position (A). (Fig. 2)
2. Close the tank drain valve (D). (Fig. 4)
3. Plug in the power cord.
4. Turn the pressure switch to the AUTO position (A). (Fig. 2)
5. Adjust the air pressure regulator to the working pressure of the tool
being used.
SHUTDOWN
1. Turn the pressure switch to the OFF position (A).
2. Unplug the power cord.
3. Reduce pressure in the tank by slowly opening the drain valve at the
bottom of the tank (B). The escaping air will also blow condensation out.
Leave the drain valve open until the next use.
