DESCRIPTION
Your Krups espresso machine is equipped with a filter-holder that has three patented systems designed to
help you make the perfect espresso at home.
1. KRUPS Precise Tamp: gradual tamping of the espresso ground coffee as the filter-holder is turned en-
sures that coffee is tamped precisely each time.
2. Coffee ejection system under the filter-holder for clean removal of the cake each time.
3. The filter-holder is compatible with all types of pods including E.S.E. and soft pods.
The filter-holder is also removable and can be frequently cleaned to maintain the filter-holder system in per-
fect working order. For your safety, the filter-holder is equipped with a locking system when pressure rises.

ESPRESSO
TIPS
n For an intensely aromatic espresso, we recommend that you use freshly ground special espresso
coffee which is ideal for preparing this type of delicate beverage, as well as cups with a capacity not
exceeding 50 ml.
n Keep the ground coffee in the refrigerator to preserve its aroma longer.
n Do not fill your filter holder to the brim, but use the measuring spoon (1 cup = 1 spoon –2 cups =
2 spoons) (Fig. 5).
n If you do not use the appliance for more than 5 days, rinse and drain the water tank.
n Always remember to turn off the appliance before removing the tank to fill or empty it.
n Make sure you always place the appliance on a flat stable surface.
n To obtain an espresso at exactly the right temperature, we recommend that you preheat your cups.
n To prolong the service life of your appliance, we recommend that you always use a Claris Aqua Filter
System cartridge (reference: F088) and that you descale the appliance at regular intervals.
IMPORTANT!
Before using for the first use, after a prolonged period of inactivity or after descaling,
the appliance must be cleaned as described in paragraph 1: "BEFORE FIRST USE".
Before using your espresso machine, clean all the accessories in soapy water and dry them.
A. SETTING THE TIME (to be done on first use and after a power cut)
n Your XP2280 combo machine has a display making it easy to use and providing a wide range of
settings.
n You must set the clock when you plug in your appliance for the first time or after a power cut.
n You can set the clock in European (24-hour clock) or American (AM-PM) display mode.
n To do this, simultaneously press the "H" and "m" buttons below the display.
n Then set the hours by pressing the "H" button and the minutes by pressing the "m" button.
Make sure the steam knob on the left of the appliance is in 0 position.
If you are not using the Claris cartridge, go directly to paragraph "C. RINSING YOUR
APPLIANCE".
B. INSTALLING THE CLARIS CARTRIDGE (to be done every time the cartridge is replaced)
n Screw the Claris cartridge into the bottom of the tank.
n Fill the tank with water (Fig. 2).
n Replace the tank by positioning it firmly to ensure that water can enter and then close the lid (Fig. 3).
n Place a container under the steam nozzle.
n Turn on the appliance by pressing the button (fig.4).
n As soon as the appliance reaches the right temperature, the LED glows steadily and the
pictograms and are displayed.
n Turn the knob on the side of the appliance to (fig.13).
n At the start, steam will come out through the steam nozzle and the four pictograms in the display and
the LED will begin to flash.
n Turn the knob to "0" position (fig.15).
n Turn off the machine and then turn it on again by pressing the button twice.
n Return to knob to : position: water flows out of the steam nozzle. If water does not flow from the
nozzle, repeat the operation from the start 1 or 2 times.

n Turn the knob to "0" position.
In this manner you can be sure that water is circulating well through the filter cartridge.
IMPORTANT:
This installation procedure must be carried out every time the cartridge is
replaced.
The Claris cartridge needs to be replaced every 2 to 3 months if it is used daily.
C. RINSING YOUR APPLIANCE (to be done on first use and after each cleaning /
descaling operation)
- RINSING OUT THE ESPRESSO CIRCUIT
n Turn on the appliance and fill the water tank (Fig. 1, 2, 3 & 4).
n Insert the filter holder (without ground coffee) in the appliance (Fig. 7).
n Place a container of sufficient volume under the filter holder.
n As soon as the appliance reaches the right temperature, the LED glows steadily and the
pictograms and are displayed.
n Press the button and let the water run out into the container (fig.9).
n Repeat this operation 5 times.
n If necessary, stop the operation by pressing the button to empty the container and then resume
the operation (fig.9).
n Empty the container and unlock the filter holder: press the "OPEN" button on the filter holder and
turn it to the left (fig.10).
-
RINSING OUT THE STEAM CIRCUIT.
Before using the steam function for the first time, the steam circuit should be cleaned.
n Fill the water tank. Make sure that the steam function dial is in O position.
n Turn the appliance on by pressing the button.
n Place a container underneath the steam nozzle.
n When the light indicator glows, press the button: the light indicator and the pictogram
on the display will begin to blink.
n When they have stopped blinking, turn the dial to the position and allow the water to flow until
steam is generated.
n Keep the steam production going for at least 30 seconds.
Before making an espresso, make sure the steam knob on the left of the appliance is in 0
position.
In order to release all the aromas of the coffee and ensure your complete satisfaction, this machine pre-
brews each coffee. The pump works for 3 seconds, stops the following 3 seconds and then the cycle
continues until the end of the preparation.
PREHEATING THE ACCESSORIES
n For best results, we recommend that you first pre-heat the accessories (filter holder and cups)
without ground coffee. To do this:
n Fill the water tank and turn on the appliance (Fig. 1, 2, 3 and 4).
n Put the filter holder in place and place the cups underneath.
n As soon as the appliance reaches the right temperature, the LED glows steadily and the
pictograms and are displayed.

WITH GROUND COFFEE
The type of ground coffee you use will determine the strength and taste of your espresso.
n Fill the water tank and turn on the appliance (Fig. 1, 2, 3 and 4). During the preheating of the
appliance, the LED flashes.
n Using the measuring spoon, place the ground coffee in the filter holder: one measuring spoon (full
to the brim) per cup (Fig. 5).
n Remove any excess ground coffee from the edge of the filter holder.
IMPORTANT:
Do not tamp the ground coffee down into the filter holder. the coffee is
automatically tamped using the KTS "Krups Tamping System".
nInsert the filter holder into the appliance by turning it as far as possible to the right, up to the stop
(Fig. 7).
nPlace one or two cups under the filter holder.
nAs soon as the appliance reaches the right temperature, the LED glows steadily and the
pictograms and are displayed.
nThen press the or button (fig.8 ou 9).
nThe coffee will stop flowing when the preprogrammed volume of 50 ml per cup is reached; to change
this volume, see chapter “Individual programming of the volume of water”.
nWhen the coffee is flowing, the pictograms or show that the cup(s) are being filled.
nOnce the cup(s) are filled, unlock the filter holder: press the "OPEN" button by turning the filter holder
to the left and remove it from the appliance (Fig. 10).
nThrow away the used coffee using the ejection system by pressing the "EJECT" button between the
two coffee outlet nozzles (Fig. 11).
nWash the filter holder under running water, while pressing the "EJECT" button to eliminate the
remnants of ground coffee.
nThe filter holder can now be filled again to prepare more espressos.
Note: You can always stop the coffee flowing by pressing the or button again.
IMPORTANT
If you want a strong or light espresso, vary the quantity of coffee or water (full
spoon for a strong espresso and a less full spoon for a light espresso). But in both
cases, be sure to tighten your filter holder as much as possible.
WITH AN "E.S.E." ESPRESSO POD
"E.S.E." for "Easy Serving Espresso" is a special espresso pod in rigid packaging (44 mm dia-
meter) of 7g of selected coffee, ground and compacted between two paper filters, specially
designed to make Italian style ristretto (tight) espressos.
This system allows an immediate, simple, clean and comfortable use of your machine.
n Fill the water tank and turn on the appliance (Fig. 1, 2, 3 and 4). During the preheating of the
appliance, the LED flashes.
n If necessary, tear the excess pre-cut paper off the pod, put the E.S.E. pod into the filter holder, wtih
the red writing if any facing down (Fig. 6).
n Be sure to place all the paper inside the filter holder, otherwise there might be leaks.
n If the pod is not positioned correctly, the result in the cup will not be satisfactory.
n Never use two pods together.
n Follow the steps in Figures 7 to 11 for preparing an espresso.
Note: Once you have obtained the sufficient amount of coffee, you can stop the flow at any time by
pressing the button (fig.8).

WITH A SOFT POD
Your machine is also compatible with soft pods (usually 60 mm in diameter). Given that this
kind of pod is not specifically designed for espresso machines, you will get a less strong es-
presso than with an E.S.E. pod.
n Fill the water tank and turn on the appliance (Fig. 1, 2, 3 and 4). During the preheating of the
appliance, the LED flashes.
n Place a soft pod in the filter holder. Never use two pods together.
n Be sure to place all the paper inside the filter holder, otherwise there might be leaks.
n If the pod is not positioned correctly, the result in the cup will not be satisfactory.
n Follow the steps in Figures 7 to 11 for preparing an espresso.
Note: Once you have obtained the sufficient amount of coffee, you can stop the flow at any time by
pressing the button (fig.8).
INDIVIDUAL PROGRAMMING OF THE VOLUME OF WATER:
To change the preprogrammed amount of water (50 ml per cup is the factory setting), proceed as fol-
lows:
n Fill the water tank and turn on the appliance (Fig. 1, 2, 3 and 4).
n Put a spoonful of coffee in the filter holder using the measuring spoon or use an E.S.E. or soft pod.
n Put the filter holder in place by turning it to the right as far as possible, up to the stop (Fig. 7).
n Place a cup under the filter holder.
n Hold down the button ( > 3 sec) until the pictogram flashes quickly. The coffee flows out.
n When the desired amount of espresso is obtained, press the . button. This amount will then be
saved automatically.
n The next time you press the , button, you will obtain the most recently recorded amount.
n You can program for 2 cups in the same manner, by pressing the button ( > 3 sec).
n Steam is used to foam up the milk (for example, to make a cappuccino or a cafe latte).
n To produce steam, the pump works by emitting an intermittent noise.
n After using the steam function, the appliance cools automatically by pumping cold water
through the heating system. During the pumping cycles, the excess steam in the heating system is
released with the hot water into the drip tray.
n The release of steam and the accompanying noise are required for the appliance to cool
down.
WARNING:
During and after using the appliance, the metal parts of the steam nozzle can
become very hot.
USING THE STEAM NOZZLE TO FROTH MILK
n Fill the water tank and turn on the appliance (fig.1, 2, 3 et 4).
n After a few moments, the button glows steadily
n Press the button (fig. 12). During the pre-heating, the LED and the pictogram flash.
n Move the steam nozzle towards the outside of the appliance.
n Pour 60 to 100 ml of semi-skimmed milk in a narrow container of about 1/2 litre and which can pass
under the steam nozzle. The milk (UHT or pasteurised) and its container should be quite cold.
n As soon as the appliance reaches the right temperature, the LED and the pictogram glow
steadily.
n Immerse the steam nozzle into the milk and turn the knob to
position
(fig.13).

n The LED and the pictogram remain steady when the steam begins to be produced and can
flash after a few moments.
n For best results, hold the nozzle towards the bottom of the container for about 25 seconds while the
milk heats up (without however touching the bottom of the container). Then, bring the container down
gradually so that the nozzle moves up towards the surface (without the nozzle coming out of the milk)
(Fig. 14).
n Once the froth has been formed, turn the knob to "0" position (Fig. 15). The appliance will now
automatically cool down by launching intermittent pumping cycles. Once this automatic operation is
complete, you can make a coffee.
IMPORTANT : To prevent the steam nozzle from being clogged, the milk foam must
never reach the black plastic upper part.
It is important to clean the steam nozzle after each use to prevent the milk from drying on the inside of the
nozzle. To do this:
n Place the steam nozzle in a container with water and repeat the milk frothing operation for 30 seconds.
WARNING!
The steam nozzle will be hot!
USING THE AUTO-CAPPUCCINO ACCESSORY TO FROTH MILK
The auto-cappuccino accessory makes it easy to prepare a cappuccino or a caffe latte. It comprises a
special dual-position nozzle and a pipe.
n Fill the water tank and turn on the appliance (Fig. 1, 2, 3 and 4).
n Attach the auto-cappuccino accessory firmly to the articulated arm.
n Place a cup under the auto-cappuccino accessory.
n Pour about 100 ml of cold semi-skimmed milk into a container.
n Immerse the pipe into the container, or directly into the carton of milk.
Warning:
Assemble the pipe firmly on the cappuccino accessory (fig.24).
n Turn the accessory’s switch to “cappuccino” or “latte” position.
n Press the “steam preheating” button (Fig. 12). During the pre-heating, the LED and the
pictogram flash.
n As soon as the appliance reaches the right temperature, the LED and the pictogram glow
steadily. Turn the knob to position (Fig. 13). The milk is transferred from the container to the cup.
n Once the froth has been formed, turn the knob to “0” position (Fig. 15). The appliance will now
automatically cool down by launching intermittent pumping cycles. Once this automatic operation is
complete, you can make a coffee.
n To clean the auto-cappuccino accessory, please repeat the procedure for frothing milk, but this time with
100 ml of water instead of 100 ml of milk.
n For more thorough cleaning of the auto cappuccino accessory, please refer to the section “Cleaning and
Maintenance”.
Do not wash your espresso machine accessories in the dishwasher.

"DESCALING").
CLEANING THE DRIP TRAY
n The drip tray must be emptied after each time the appliance is used. Lift it up slightly and remove it
from the appliance.
n If multiple espressos are prepared one after the other, it should be emptied from time to time (every
7 to 8 espressos approximately) (Fig. 19 & 20).
n The presence of water is normal and is not the sign of a leak.
n If necessary, clean the drip tray and its grid with water and a small amount of gentle washing-up
liquid, rinse and dry. When reassembling the components, make sure everything is in the right place.
CLEANING THE BREWING HEAD AND FILTER HOLDER
n The brewing head and filter holder must be cleaned after each use. Simply wipe a damp cloth over
the brewing head (Fig. 21) and clean the filter holder with clean water and a small amount of gentle
washing-up liquid.
n Do not use alcohol- or solvent-based cleaning products.
n For best results, you can press the "EJECT" button several times during rinsing.
We recommend that you shake the filter holder thoroughly in order to remove all the water.

The guarantee does not cover appliances which become faulty because they have not been descaled
regularly.
Descale your espresso machine using white vinegar or a sachet of commercial citric or sulfamic acid.
We recommend that you use the Krups descaling accessory, reference F054, available in Krups
authorized service centres (to Krupsonlinestore.ca for Canadian residents only). In addition to two des-
caling sachets, this accessory includes a water hardness tape tester to assess the frequency with which
your appliance should be descaled, in normal use. The amount of scale depends on the hardness of the
water but also the level of use.
The frequency of descaling given by the F054 accessory is therefore purely indicative.
If in doubt, it is recommended to descale every month

Before first use
n Operate the coffee maker for the first time with 1 litre of water, without coffee ground, by filling the
tank and pressing the button on the filter coffee maker.
IMPORTANT
The quality of the water you use determines the taste of your coffee.
You must ensure that the water is freshly drawn from the tap (so that it has not
had the time to stagnate in the air), that it does not smell of chlorine and that it is
relatively cold.
We recommend that you filter your water using a Krups Duo Filter, reference XS 1000, avai-
lable in shops, to be placed in the container provided (D) which is fitted in the coffee maker
water tank.
