The RTH2520 programmable thermostat can be used to control:

• a gas, fuel oil or electric furnace -2 or 3 wires

• a central air conditioner - 2 or 3 wires

• a hot water system with or without pump - 2 wires

• a millivolt system - 2 wires

• a central heating and cooling system - 4 or 5 wires

Note: This thermostat is not compatible with heat pumps or multi-

stage systems.

2.1 Removing the Old Thermostat

IN ORDER TO AVOID ANY RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK, CUT

POWER TO THE HEATING/COOLING SYSTEM.

n Remove the old thermostat to access the wires.

Warning: If the old thermostat was mounted onto an electrical box,

it was probably powered by 120/240 volts. In this case, this thermo-

stat cannot be used.

o Identify and label each wire (with the corresponding letter on

the wire terminal) and remove them from the terminals.

p If necessary, strip the end of each wire (maximum of 1/4 inch).

q Wrap the wires around a pencil to prevent

them from falling into the wall.

r If the hole in the wall is too big, insulate it

using a non-flammable material in order to

avoid air draughts behind the thermostat.

2.2 Installing the New Baseplate

For a new installation, choose a location approximately 5 feet

(1.5 m) above the floor and on an inside wall. Avoid draughty

areas (top of staircase, air outlet, etc.), dead air spots (behind

doors), direct sunlight or areas near concealed pipes or chim-

neys.

n Remove the thermostat faceplate.

o Loosen the locking screw in order to separate the thermostat

from its baseplate (the screw cannot be completely removed).

p Gently tilt the thermostat upwards.

q Mark and bore the appropriate mounting holes (using a 3/16”

drill bit) or use the existing holes. Insert the plastic anchors.

r Pass the wires through the opening of the baseplate and fix the

baseplate to the wall using the screws provided.

2.3 Connecting the Thermostat

Refer to the following table for matching the wire labels with the

thermostat terminals.

Note: Do not connect wires identified as C, X or B. Wrap the bare

end of these wires with electrical tape.

Important: The red jumper wire between Rh and Rc terminals must

be removed in a 5-wire installation.

2.4 Setting JP2 Jumper

The jumper specifies how the fan will operate

when it is placed in automatic mode (see sec-

tion 3.2).

2.5 Installing the Batteries

n Gently pull out the battery cover.

o Install the batteries as shown. Observe the polarity.

p Reinstall the battery cover. You will hear a clicking sound.

After the batteries are installed, the thermostat performs a

sequence of tests for approximately 5 seconds.

Afterwards, the screen displays the actual

temperature. It is normal that the displayed

temperature be higher than the ambient

temperature if you are holding the thermo-

stat. Once installed on the wall, the thermostat will display the ambi-

ent temperature. By default, the setpoint is 70°F (21°C).

The time and day settings flash to indicate that they must be set

(see section 5.1).

2.6 Completing the Installation

n Once the baseplate and the batteries are installed, mount the

thermostat on the baseplate.

o Secure the thermostat using the locking screw and install the

faceplate.

p Apply power back to the system.

3.1 System Operating Mode

Use this selector switch to place the system in Heat-

ing mode (HEAT) or Cooling mode (COOL), or to set

both modes to Off.

Note: When you place the thermostat in Cooling mode, you might

need to wait up to five minutes before cooling can start. This is a

safety feature for the compressor. will flash on the screen during

the delay.

3. Basic Functions

3.2 Fan Operating Mode

Use the selector switch to set the fan to automatic

mode (AUTO) or continuous mode (ON).

Note: This switch is not used in a 2-wire installation

as the fan is not connected to the thermostat in this

type of installation.

3.3 Displaying the Temperature

The actual temperature is normally displayed. To view the setpoint,

press once on one of the buttons. The setpoint is displayed for

5 seconds along with the icon.

Note: Pressing either of the buttons more than once will

change the setpoint.

3.4 Setting the Temperature

Press one of the buttons until the desired temperature is dis-

played.

3.5 Backlight

The display illuminates for 12 seconds when the backlight button or

either of the buttons is pressed.

3.6 Thermostat Control Mode

3.6.1 Manual/Permanent Hold Mode

Maintains the temperature at a fixed setpoint. To place the thermo-

stat in this mode, press [ Mode ]. The house icon will disappear.

3.6.2 Programmable Mode

Maintains the temperature according to the energy-saving sched-

ule. To place the thermostat in this mode, press [ Mode ]. The cur-

rent period will be displayed. The four possible periods are:

To see the default program settings, see section 5.3.

Temporary Bypass

If you modify the setpoint (using the buttons) when the thermo-

stat is in Programmable mode, the thermostat will use the new set-

point for the next 2 hours. The house icon flashes during the

bypass. Afterwards the thermostat will return to the temperature set-

ting of the period currently underway.

3.7 Filter Replacement Indicator

After 500 hours of operation, an icon appears to indi-

cate that the filter needs replacement. Once the filter

is replaced, press [Filter] for 3 seconds to remove

the icon and reset the counter.

3.8 Battery Replacement Indicator

Install fresh batteries immediately when the icon starts

flashing. The icon flashes for 120 days before the bat-

teries are depleted. You should replace batteries once

a year or before leaving home for more than a month

even if the icon has not appeared.

After replacing the batteries, set the time, day and date (see sec-

tions 5.1 and 5.2). However, the temperature and program settings

are saved and do not need to be re-entered.

Warning: Before removing the batteries, place the

system switch on the thermostat to Off. Otherwise, the

heating/cooling unit might still be running even after

the batteries are removed.

n To access the configuration menu, press the backlight button

for 3 seconds.

o To go to the next parameter (menu item), briefly press the back-

light button.

p To modify a parameter, press .

q Repeat steps 2 and 3 if necessary.

r Press the backlight button for 3 seconds to exit the configura-

tion menu.

5.1 Setting the Time and Day

n Press [ Clk ]. The hour flashes.

o Set the hour using .

p Press [ Clk ]. The minutes flash.

q Set the minutes using .

r Press [ Clk ]. The day flashes.

s Set the day using . (MO: Monday, TU: Tuesday,

WE: Wednesday, TH: Thursday, FR: Friday, SA: Saturday and

SU: Sunday).

t Press [ Exit ] to exit.

5.2 Setting the Date

The date is needed for automatic daylight savings changeover.

n Press [ Clk ] for 3 seconds to display the year.

AUTO

The fan operates only when the heating or cooling sys-

tem is On (typical setting).

The fan operates continuously. Use this setting to

improve air circulation and air cleaning.

When Early Start is On, the thermostat determines when to start heating or cooling

so that the desired temperature is reached at the set time.

When this function is On, the thermostat automatically switches to daylight savings

time on the second Sunday of March and to normal time on the first Sunday of

November (see section 5.2).

Use the Heat/Cool selector switch to switch between the heating parameter and the

cooling parameter.

For optimal heating control, use the setting that matches your system as follows:

2=30 min (steam, gravity), 3=20 min (hot water, 90%+ high-efficiency furnace), 4=15

min (gas or oil), 5=12 min (alternate setting for gas or oil), 6=10 min (electric).

The corresponding cooling cycle lengths are: 2=30 min., 3=20 min., 4=15 min.,

5=12 min., 6=10 min.

5.3 Energy-saving Schedule

Your thermostat is preprogrammed with an energy-saving schedule.

The schedule automatically controls your heating or cooling system

by switching from one setpoint to the next according to the preset

times.

5.4 Modifying the Schedule

You can program up to 4 periods per day, each period having its

own temperature settings. You can have a different program for

each day of the week. For each period, you can set the start time,

the heating setpoint and the cooling setpoint.

n Press [ Pgm ]. The period 1 settings are displayed.

Note: During programming, to skip a period, press [ CLR ] while

the period is displayed. For example, in the predefined energy-sav-

ing schedule, periods 2 and 3 have been skipped for Saturday and

Sunday.

o Press [ Day ] to select the day. Press for 3 seconds to select all

7 days. (MO: Monday, TU: Tuesday, WE: Wednesday,

TH: Thursday, FR: Friday, SA: Saturday and SU: Sunday).

p Set the time (in increments of 15 minutes) using the but-

tons.

q Press [ P# ]. The heating or cooling setpoint

flashes depending on the position of the Heat/

Cool selector.

r Set the desired temperature for the displayed

period using the buttons.

s Use the Heat/Cool selector to switch to the other mode (e.g., if

you were in Heating mode, switch to Cooling mode). The set-

point for that mode flashes.

t Set the desired temperature using the buttons.

u Press [ P# ] to go to the next period.

v Repeat steps 2 to 8 for the remaining periods.

w Press [ Exit ] to exit.

2.1 Retirer l'ancien thermostat

POUR ÉVITER TOUT RISQUE DE CHOC ÉLECTRIQUE,

COUPER L'ALIMENTATION DU SYSTÈME DE CHAUFFAGE.

n Retirer l'ancien thermostat pour accéder aux fils.

Mise en garde : Si l'ancien thermostat était installé sur une boîte

électrique, il était probablement alimenté par du courant à 120/240

volts. Dans ce cas, le nouveau thermostat ne convient pas.

o Identifier et étiqueter chaque fil (avec la lettre de la borne

correspondante) et débrancher les fils des bornes.

p Au besoin, dénuder l'extrémité de chacun des fils (maximum de

6 mm).

q Enrouler les fils autour d'un crayon pour

les empêcher de glisser dans le mur.

r Si l'ouverture dans le mur est trop grande,

l'isoler au moyen d'un matériau

ininflammable pour éviter tout courant

d'air derrière le thermostat.

2.2 Installer la base du thermostat

S'il s'agit d'une nouvelle installation, choisir un emplacement à

environ 5 pi (1,5 m) du sol, sur un mur intérieur. Éviter les

courants d'air (haut d'un escalier, prises d'air, etc.), les endroits

où l'air est stagnant (derrière les portes), les rayons du soleil

ou les murs derrière lesquels passent des canalisations ou des

cheminées dissimulées.

n Retirer la façade du thermostat.

o Dévisser la vis de fixation pour séparer le thermostat de sa

base (il est impossible de retirer entièrement cette vis).

p Soulever le thermostat vers le haut.

q Marquer et percer des trous de fixation (employer un foret de

3/16”) ou utiliser les trous existants. Insérer les chevilles

d'ancrage.

r Passer les fils par l'ouverture dans la base et fixer la base au

mur au moyen des vis fournies.

2.3 Raccorder le thermostat

Se référer au tableau suivant afin d’identifier le fil correspondant à

chaque borne du thermostat.

Remarque : Ne pas brancher les fils identifiés comme C, X ou B.

Couvrir le bout dénudé de ces fils avec du ruban électrique.

Important: Le cavalier (fils rouge) entre les bornes Rc et Rh doit

être enlevé dans une installation à 5 fils.

2.4 Réglage du cavalier J2

Le cavalier sert à spécifier le

fonctionnement du ventilateur en mode

automatique (voir la section 3.2).

2.5 Installer les piles

n Enlever le couvercle du compartiment à piles.

o Installer les piles comme sur l'illustration. Observer la polarité.

p Remettre le couvercle en place. Un déclic se fera entendre.

Une fois les piles installées, le thermostat effectue une série de

tests, qui dure environ 5 secondes.

Ensuite, l'écran affiche la température

mesurée. Il est normal que la température

affichée soit supérieure à la température

ambiante si le thermostat est dans vos

mains. Le thermostat affichera la température ambiante lorsqu'il

sera installé au mur. Par défaut, la température réglée est à 70 °F

(21 °C).

L’heure et le jour clignotent pour indiquer qu’ils doivent être rajustés

(voir la section 5.1).

2.6 Terminer l'installation

n Une fois la base et les piles installées, fixer le thermostat sur la

base.

o Visser le thermostat au moyen de la vis de fixation et installer la

façade.

p Rétablir l'alimentation électrique du système.

3.1 Mode de fonctionnement du système

Utiliser le sélecteur pour placer le système en mode

chauffage (Heat) ou en mode climatisation (Cool), ou

en arrêt (Off).

Remarque : Lorsque vous placez le thermostat en mode climatisa-

tion, il est possible que vous devriez attendre jusqu'à cinq minutes

avant que la climatisation soit activée. Ceci est une protection pour

le compresseur. L’icône clignotera durant le délai.

3. Fonctions de base

3.2 Mode de fonctionnement du ventilateur

Utiliser le sélecteur pour placer le ventilateur en mode

automatique (AUTO) ou en mode continu (ON).

Remarque : Ce sélecteur n'est pas utilisé dans une installa-

tion à 2 fils puisque le ventilateur n'est pas relié au thermos-

tat dans ce type d’installation.

3.3 Afficher la température

La température mesurée est normalement affichée. Pour voir la

température réglée, appuyer sur un des boutons . Celle-ci

s'affichera pendant 5 secondes, accompagnée de l'icône .

Remarque : Si l'on appuie sur un bouton plus d'une fois, la température

réglée sera modifiée.

3.4 Régler la température

Appuyer sur l'un des boutons jusqu'à ce que la température

désirée soit affichée.

3.5 Retroéclairage

L’écran s’illumine pendant 12 secondes lorsque vous appuyez sur

le bouton de rétroéclairage ou l’un des boutons .

3.6 Mode de fonctionnement du thermostat

3.6.1 Mode manuel/permanent

La température est réglée à une valeur fixe. Pour faire passer le

thermostat à ce mode, appuyer sur [ Mode ]. L'icône de maison ne

sera plus affichée.

3.6.2 Mode programmable

La température est réglée selon l’horaire éconergétique. Pour faire

passer le thermostat à ce mode, appuyer sur [ Mode ]. La période

en cours sera affichée. Il y a quatre périodes possibles

Pour voir les réglages par défaut de chacune des périodes, voir la

section 5.3.

Dérogation temporaire

Si vous modifiez la température (à l'aide des boutons ) lorsque

le thermostat est en mode programmable, la nouvelle valeur sera

utilisée pendant deux heures durant lesquelles l'icône de maison

clignotera à l'écran. Une fois le temps écoulé, le thermostat reprend

les réglages de la période en cours.

3.7 Indicateur de remplacement du filtre

Après 500 heures de fonctionnement, une icône

apparaît à l'écran pour indiquer qu'il est temps de

remplacer le filtre. Une fois le filtre remplacé, appuyer

sur [Filter] pendant 3 secondes pour effacer l'icône

et remettre le compteur à zéro.

3.8 Indicateur de remplacement des piles

Installer des piles neuves lorsque l’icône apparaît à

l’écran. L’icône clignotera pendant 120 jours avant que

les piles soient à plat. Il faut remplacer les piles une

fois par année ou lorsque vous quittez votre résidence

pour plus d’un mois même si l’icone n’apparaît pas à l’écran.

Une fois les piles remplacées, régler l'heure, le jour et la date (voir

les sections 5.1 et 5.2). Les autres réglages sont toutefois

sauvegardés.

Attention : Avant d'enlever les piles, placer le sélec-

teur du système sur le thermostat à Off. Sinon, le sys-

tème de chauffage/climatisation pourrait encore

fonctionner même lorsque les piles sont enlevées.

n Pour accéder au menu de configuration, appuyer sur le bouton

de retroéclairage pendant 3 secondes.

o Pour passer au paramètre suivant du menu, appuyer

brièvement sur le bouton de retroéclairage.

p Pour modifier un paramètre, appuyer sur l'un des boutons .

q Répéter les étapes 2 et 3 au besoin.

r Appuyer sur le bouton de retroéclairage pendant 3 secondes

pour quitter le menu de configuration.

Le ventilateur fonctionne seulement lorsque le chauffage ou la

climatisation est activée (réglage typique).

Le ventilateur fonctionne continuellement. Utiliser ce réglage

pour améliorer la circulation et la purification de l’air.

Quand la fonction de démarrage anticipé est activée, le thermostat détermine

l’heure à laquelle il faut mettre le système en marche pour que la température réglée

soit atteinte à l'heure désirée.

Lorsque cette fonction est activée, elle permet au thermostat de passer automati-

quement à l’heure avancée (d’été) le deuxième dimanche de mars et à l’heure nor-

male (d’hiver) le premier dimanche de novembre (voir la section 5.2).

Utiliser le sélecteur du mode de fonctionnement du système pour commuter entre le

paramètre de chauffage ou celui de climatisation.

Pour un contrôle optimal du chauffage, choisir le réglage qui correspond à votre

système : 2=30 min (vapeur, gravité), 3=20 min (eau chaude, 90%+ haute efficacité),

4=15 min (gaz ou mazout), 5=12 min (gaz ou mazout), 6=10 min (électrique).

Les durées de cycle de climatisation correspondantes sont : 2 = 30 min, 3 = 20 min,

4 = 15 min, 5 = 12 min, 6 = 10 min.

5.2 Réglage de la date

Ce réglage est nécessaire si vous désirez utiliser la fonction de pas-

sage automatique à l’heure d’hiver et d’été.

n Appuyer sur [ Clk ] durant 3 secondes. L’année

est affichée.

o Entrer l’année courante et appuyer sur

[ Clk ]. Le mois est affiché.

p Entrer le mois courant et appuyer sur

[ Clk ]. La date est affichée.

q Entrer la date courante .

r Appuyer sur [ Exit ] pour quitter.

5.3 Horaire éconergétique

Le thermostat contient déjà en mémoire un horaire éconergétique. Celui-ci

commande automatiquement le système de chauffage ou de climatisation

en passant d'un réglage de température à un autre selon les heures

établies.

5.4 Modifier l’horaire

Vous pouvez programmer jusqu’à 4 périodes par jour, chaque

période ayant ses propres réglages de température. Vous pouvez

avoir un programme différent pour chaque jour de la semaine. Pour

chacune des périodes, vous pouvez programmer l'heure du début,

la température de chauffage et la température de climatisation.

n Appuyer sur [ Pgm ]. Le réglage de la période 1 s'affiche alors à

l'écran.

Remarque : Pour sauter une période, appuyer sur [ CLR ] lorsque la

période est affichée. Par exemple, les périodes 2 et 3 ont été sautées pour

samedi et dimanche dans le tableau précédent.

o Pour sélectionner un jour à programmer, appuyer sur le bouton

[ Day ] jusqu'à ce que le jour soit affiché. Appuyer pendant 3 secondes

pour sélectionner les 7 jours (MO : lundi, TU : mardi, WE : mercredi, TH

: jeudi, FR : vendredi, SA : samedi et SU : dimanche).

p Régler l'heure (par tranches de 15 minutes) au moyen des boutons

q Appuyer sur [ P# ]. L’affichage de la température de

chauffage ou de la température de climatisation

clignote selon la position du sélecteur du mode de

fonctionnement du système (Heat/Cool).

r Régler la température désirée pour la période affichée

au moyen des boutons .

s Passer à l'affichage de température de l’autre mode en utilisant le

sélecteur Heat/Cool (par exemple, pour passer au mode climatisation

si le thermostat était en mode chauffage).

t Régler la température désirée au moyen des boutons .

u Appuyer sur [ P# ] pour passer à la période suivante.

v Répéter les étapes 2 à 8 pour chacune des périodes.

w Appuyer sur [ Exit ] pour sortir du mode de programmation.
