TYPE BF APPLIED PART: Equipment providing a degree of protection against electric
shock, with isolated applied part. Indicates that this device has conductive contact with
the end user.
This symbol on the unit means “Refer to instructions for use”.
Temperature Limitation: indicates the temperature limits to which the medical device can
be safely exposed.
Lot Number: indicates the manufacturer’s batch code so that the batch or lot can be
identified.

The first number 2: Protected against access to hazardous parts with a finger, and the
jointed test finger of 12 mm ø, 80 mm length, shall have adequate clearance from
hazardous parts, and protected against solid foreign objects of 12.5 mm ø and greater.
The second number 2: Protected against vertically falling water drops when enclosure is
tilted up to 15˚. Vertically falling drops shall have no harmful effects when the enclosure is
tilted at any angle up to 15˚ on either side of the vertical.

1. INTRODUCTION
Device Description & Principles of Design
The Sports TENS 2 combines the
treatment capabilities of a TENS
device, an EMS or NMES device,
and a relaxing massage stimulator in one unit.
It sends a small and gentle stimulation (similar
to your natural nerve impulses) to the muscles
being treated via two or four auto-adhesive
electrode pads, in order to help you to firm and
tone your body.
Rehabilitation: neuromuscular facilitation,
muscle re-education, muscle training,
prevention/slowing of atrophy/hypotrophy. EMS
has been shown to improve blood flow and
circulation.
Sports training: improve muscle strength and
performance; warm up, strength, speed, power,
resistance, endurance and recovery.
Muscle relaxation: loosening up of muscular
tension, improving muscular fatigue symptoms
and reduced fatigue and muscle tension.
2. INTENDED USE
Sports TENS 2 is a medical device designed to
be used in the home healthcare environment to
improve muscle tone and bulk, as well as
provide symptomatic relief and management of
acute or chronic localised pain and muscle pain.
It is suitable for use by all who can control the
device and understand the instructions.
Do not use the device for any purpose other
than this intended use.
Warning: Not suitable for use in
children without medical supervision.
3. CONTRAINDICATIONS,
WARNINGS & CAUTIONS
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Do NOT use if you have a pacemaker (or if you
have a heart rhythm problem) or with any
electronic medical devices. Using this unit with
electronic medical devices may cause
erroneous operation of the device. Stimulation
in the direct vicinity of an implanted device may
affect some models.
Do NOT use during the first three months of
pregnancy. It is not known whether TENS and
EMS may affect foetal development.
Do NOT use on the abdomen in the later stages
of pregnancy. Stop using immediately if you
experience unexpected contractions.
WARNINGS:
Do NOT use when driving, operating
machinery, or similar actions needing muscular
control. Loose electrode pads, damaged leads,
or sudden changes in contact may cause brief
involuntary muscle movements.
Do NOT use to mask or relieve undiagnosed
pain. This may delay diagnosis of a progressive
condition.
Do NOT use if you have, in the area being
treated: active or suspected cancer or
undiagnosed pain with a history of cancer.
Stimulation directly through a confirmed or
suspected malignancy should be avoided as it
may stimulate growth and promote spread of
cancer cells.
Do NOT use simultaneously with high
frequency hospital diagnostic/therapeutic

equipment. Doing so may result in burns at the
site of the electrodes and possible damage to
device.
Do NOT use electrodes on the front of the neck.
Stimulation on the front of the neck can affect
your heart rate or cause contraction of the
throat.
Do NOT use electrodes across the chest. Very
strong stimulation across the chest may cause
an extra heartbeat and/or rhythm disturbances
to your heart, which could be lethal.
Do NOT use in close proximity (e.g. 1 m) to a
shortwave or microwave as this may produce
instability in the stimulator output.
Do NOT apply near the thorax because the
introduction of electrical current may increase
the risk of cardiac fibrillation.
Stimulation should not be applied across or
through the head, directly on the eyes, covering
the mouth, on the front of the neck (especially
the carotid sinus), or from electrodes placed on
the upper back or crossing over the heart.
CAUTIONS:
Caution should be used if you have a bleeding
disorder as stimulation may increase blood flow
to the stimulated region.
Caution should be used if you have suspected
or diagnosed epilepsy as electrical stimulation
may affect seizure threshold.
Caution should be observed when using the
device at the same time as being connected to
monitoring equipment with body worn electrode
pads. It may interfere with the signals being
monitored.
Caution should be used following recent
surgical procedures. Stimulation may disrupt
the healing process.
Caution Do not permit use by children unable
to understand the instructions or persons with
cognitive disabilities, i.e.; Alzheimer’s disease
or dementia.
Caution Keep away from children under 5
years of age, pets and pests. Long lead wires
and charging cable - risk of strangulation in
infants.
Caution should be observed when using the
Sports TENS at high strength settings. Sports
TENS has a Yellow LED light on output socket
which means the output will exceed 10 mA
(R.M.S) or 10 V (R.M.S) averaged over any
period of 1 sec. Prolonged use at high settings
may cause muscle injury or tissue inflammation.
Caution Not intended for use in an oxygen rich
environment.
Caution Not intended for use in conjunction
with flammable anaesthetics or flammable
agents.
Caution The patient is an intended operator.
Caution Do not service and maintain the device
while in use with a patient
Caution Maintenance and all repairs should
only be carried out by an authorized agency.
The manufacturer will not be held responsible
for the results of maintenance or repairs by
unauthorized persons.
If necessary, we will provide circuit diagrams,
component part lists or other information that
will assist authorized service personnel to repair
the device.
DO NOT PLACE ELECTRODE PADS:
On skin, which does not have normal
sensation. If the skin is numb too great a

strength may be used, which could result in
skin inflammation.
On broken skin. The electrode pads could
encourage infection.
On the front of the neck. This could cause
the airway to close, giving
breathing problems. May cause sudden
drop in blood pressure (vasovagal
response).
Over the eyes. May affect eyesight or cause
headaches.
Across the front of the head. Effect on
patients who have had strokes or seizures
is not known. May affect your sense of
balance. The effects of stimulation on the
brain are unknown.
ELECTRODE PADS CAUTION:
Caution: Do not ignore any allergic reaction to
the electrode pads: If a skin irritation develops,
stop using the device, as this type of electrodes
may not be suitable for you. Alternative
electrode pads specially made for sensitive skin
are available (see E-696-SS).
Caution: Do not use this device with leads or
electrode pads other than those recommended
by the manufacturer. Performance may vary
from specification. Electrodes with smaller
surface area may cause tissue irritation.
Caution: Do not use high intensity settings if
electrodes are smaller than 50x50mm.
Note: Electrode pads supplied have
no measurable latex content.
TO KEEP YOUR DEVICE IN GOOD
WORKING ORDER, OBSERVE THE
FOLLOWING ADDITIONAL CAUTIONS:
Caution: Do not immerse your device in water
or place it close to excessive heat such as a
fireplace or radiant heater or sources of high
humidity such as a nebulizer or kettle as this
may cause it to cease to operate correctly.
Caution: Keep the device away from sunlight,
as long-term exposure to sunlight may affect
the rubber causing it to become less elastic and
crack.
Caution: Keep the device away from lint and
dust, as long-term exposure to lint or dust may
affect the sockets or cause the battery
connector to develop a bad contact.
Caution: Temperature & Relative Humidity of
storage: -10°C to +60°C, 15% to 75% R.H.

Caution: There are no user serviceable parts.
Do not attempt to open or modify the unit. This
may affect the safe operation of the unit and will
invalidate the warranty.
Note: There are no known side
effects to use and long-term use is not
harmful. However, the device works
your muscles and unaccustomed amounts of
exercise may produce muscle ache. If this
happens, simply reduce the strength of the
machine or allow your muscles to rest until the
aching disappears.
4. INFORMATION ABOUT
THE PROGRAMME
SETTINGS
Each programme has its own combination of
Frequency and Pulse Width settings which
allow for different muscle groups to be
exercised and toned through the electrode
pads.

Frequency (measured in Hz - pulses per
second)
For EMS programmes:
Low frequencies (1-10 Hz) have a purifying and
relaxing effect through individual contractions.
Medium frequencies (20-50 Hz) can put a high
level of strain on the muscle, thus promoting the
muscular structure.
Higher frequencies, there is permanent tension
in the muscle (tetany) combined with premature
muscle fatigue. They are therefore preferably
used for elasticity and maximum strength
training.
For TENS programmes:
Pain gate: A high frequency of 110 Hz is good
at blocking pain signals.
Endorphine release: A low frequency of 4 or 10
Hz allows for the release of endorphins, the
body’s natural morphine-like substances.
Pulse Width (measured in μs - millionths
of a second)
The Sports TENS 2 unit has pulse widths of 20
to 350 μs. Generally speaking, the higher the
pulse width, the more "aggressive" the
stimulation feels, if the pulse width is set high
enough, it will usually elicit a muscle
contraction, which is required for an effective
toning of the muscle group selected.
For the TENS programmes (pain relief), it is not
desired to elicit a muscle contraction, however
Pulse Rate is important because different
frequency settings target different nerve groups
and the setting will determine if the "Gate
Theory" or "Endorphin Theory" of TENS will be
used.
Work/Rest
All the EMS programmes include a WARM UP,
TRAIN, and COOL DOWN phase. In the TRAIN
phase, the stimulation is intermittent.
Once you have reached a comfortable level, 5
seconds after you stop pressing the button, the
intermittent Work/Active Rest phase will start.
For each programme, the unit will go through a
stimulation phase (Work) for 1-40 seconds,
followed by a phase without stimulation (Active
Rest) for a similar time.
This is to allow your muscles to recover from
exercise and avoid fatigue.
During the Work period (W), the unit will
generate contractions, try to contract the
muscle voluntarily at the time to get the best
possible results.
This cycle Work/Rest will continue for the
duration of the programme selected.
W and R are displayed on the screen.
Ramp
RAMP is the time in seconds taken to move up
and down between zero and the set stimulation
strength (i.e. the time taken to move between
the Work stimulation and the Rest period). The
Sports TENS 2 has a fixed ramp time of 1.5 s
up and 0.75 s down.
Constant and Burst Modes
Constant mode is when the sensation is
continuous versus Burst mode when the
sensation, as its name implies, is one of on and
off. Constant mode is often used for acute pain
via Pain Gate effect whereas Burst mode is
useful in chronic pain relief. Burst gives a
combination of Pain Gate and Endorphin
Release, but the squeezing feeling may not be
as comfortable. The stimulation intensity will
need to be relatively high. In Constant mode,

the sensation is continuous and is more of a
tingling pins and needles type.
Modulation Modes
Modulation is when either the frequency or
pulse width sweep across range of settings. In
modulation mode, the machine delivers a less
regular pattern of TENS stimulation in an
attempt to reduce or minimise the
accommodation effects of regular, patterned
stimulation. This is potentially most useful for
patients who use TENS for several hours a day,
if for no other reason than accommodation
occurs at a slower rate and therefore less
intensity adjustment may be required. See
programmes F and G.
HAN Stimulation
Invented by Professor Han, it is an alternating
mode or shifting between high and low
frequencies; stimulation works at a high
frequency and a relatively low pulse width; and
a low frequency and a relatively high pulse
width. This is thought to produce a better
analgesic effect and could be used to relieve
both acute and chronic pain.

* P=Pain Gate. Gives relief when being used.
Wears off after a few hours.
E= Endorphin Release. Builds up over 40 mins.
Lasts several hours after use.
There is not one programme for a particular
condition, and the best choice varies from one
person to another, even if they have the same
type of pain.
Each user needs to select both the programme
and the positioning of the electrode pads that is
best for them. You may need to try a few
positions/programmes before finding the one
that suits you.

5.2. PRESET PROGRAMMES
Programme 1 & 2:
P Constant stimulation, the programme
generates a uniform smooth sensation. This is
the gentlest programme. It is advisable to use
for your first trial of TENS while you get used to
the sensation.
Programme 3:
E - Pulsing or tapping sensation associated with
muscle contractions. Uses the Endorphin
release mechanism. It is suitable to be used for
chronic pains such as back pain & arthritis, but
not for injured muscles where the contractions
may delay healing.
This low frequency is also known as
Acupuncture-Like TENS and can be used on
acupuncture points. One example of this is
application on acupuncture point C6 for
nausea, travel and morning sickness.
Programme 4 & 5:
P + E This programme combines P and E, and
is thought to be the most effective for radiating
pain in arms and legs and deep muscular pain
(Osteoarthritic pain in the knee, Sciatica central
pain).
Programme 6 & 7:
P + E Han stimulation. This programme
alternates between low and high frequency
every 3 seconds. The effective pain relief is
provided by a combination of P and E.
Programme 8:
P+E PFM, Pulse Width and Frequency
Modulation. PW decreases as F increases. This
programme gives a pleasant slow relaxing
massage sensation. The continuous change
helps prevent accommodation occurring.
Programme 9:
P+E FM, Frequency Modulation, this
programme constantly varies the sensation,
and is ideal for treating chronic pain over long
period (example 5+ hours). Neck, shoulder,
Elbow pain, Rheumatic pain, Lumbago, Hip
pain, Osteoarthritic pain in the knee.
Programme 10:
P DTENS: Reduced pulse width is ideal for
treating nerve rich areas (tension type
headache, facial pain, neck pain, post herpetic
neuralgia, migraine).
5.3. MANUAL PROGRAMMES
Programme 11:
Manual programme with constant stimulation.
Programme 12:
Manual programme with burst stimulation.
5.4. PROGRAMME USAGE
TENS can be used for as long as it is
necessary. Continuous treatment is fine, but the
electrode pads should be repositioned regularly
(at least every 12 hours) to allow the skin to be
exposed to the air.
The Endorphin Release programmes work
better when the strength is high enough to
cause small muscle contractions. Best results
are achieved with a session duration between
20 and 40 minutes. Longer use may cause
muscle ache.

Before selecting an EMS programme, you will
need to select a mode:
MODE I is for small muscles like the face and
hands.
MODE II is for medium sized muscles like arms
and feet.
Mode III is for large muscles like thighs,
buttocks, and abdomen.
6.2. PRESET PROGRAMMES
Programme 1: Muscle Calming
Relaxing the muscles as much as possible and
to promote the body’s natural endorphins to
promote pain relief and to improve the blood
circulation and provide oxygen into the muscle.
Programme 2: Resume Training 1
To promote the slow twitch fibres to build
muscle strength to help reduce muscle atrophy
ready for resuming training activities. Used for
all type of sports.
Programme 3: Resume Training 2
Progress from programme 2 as tolerance
increases.
Programme 4: Resistance 1
Improving and increasing the capacity to
develop very high level of muscle force over a
long period of time. Improving the efficacy of the
oxygen consumption at the muscle level and
the capacity to withstand toxin accretion, such
as lactic acid. For sports activities that require
very high levels of prolonged muscle activity:
Rowing, Cycling, Middle distance running.
Programme 5: Resistance 2
Progress from programme 4 as tolerance
increases.
Alternative application: Lipolysis
Increasing the flow of blood circulation and
modifying the metabolism of the lipocytes. To
help stimulate the subcutaneous deposits of fat.
To assist reduce or eliminate the Orange Peel
effect of the skin surface
Programme 6: Maximum Muscle
Contraction
To increase muscle bulk and volume and to
improve muscle force. Searching for muscular
hypertrophy.
Programme 7: Muscle toning 1
Strengthening the muscles, improving blood
circulation and capillary bed density. Ideal for
applying to the Thigh, Legs, Bottom and
Abdomen.
Programme 8: Muscle toning 2
Similar to programme 7, but adding bulk in
preference to endurance
Programme 9: Force Output, Anaerobic
activity
Increasing the muscle capacity to a level of
instantaneous maximum muscle force,
changing muscle force into explosive action.
Used for all activities requiring maximum
muscle output in a very short space of time,
such as Judo, short distance sprinting, throwing
the discus or shot-put.
All preset TRAIN phases have Ramp up 1.5 s,
Ramp Down 0.75 s.
Most Active Rest phases are at 4 Hz, 200 μs.

Warning: Consult your healthcare

settings. Correct settings depend on
your muscle tone and exercise goals.
Inappropriate settings could cause discomfort,

undesired muscle balance, or even muscle
injury.
Programme 10 & 11:
Manual programmes, you can select the
frequency, the pulse width, the work and active
rest time.
At first use, the default values are shown.
The Warning triangle is displayed if the
Active Rest period is less than:
Rest Time = Work Time * (WorkHz-16.66) /
16.66 seconds.
This is because muscle fibres can only activate
a limited number of times a minute (about 1000)
without becoming fatigued.
6.4. PROGRAMME USAGE
Recommended use for all body parts except
the face:
Generally, 3 sessions per week, over a period
of 4 to 6 weeks, gives good initial results
depending on the body shaping, toning, sports
training or rehabilitation and recovery needs.
Face (Mode I):
Using the Sports TENS 2 is a non-invasive
option for helping lift and/or tighten the soft
tissues of the face, improving facial muscle tone
and reducing the signs of ageing.
Recommended use for Face: One treatment
session daily, 5 days/week, for 12 weeks.
You may notice some positive effects after just
one session, but normally it will take about 6
weeks before you notice a difference.
Take care when adjusting the intensity as facial
muscles are particularly sensitive; intensity
should be increased gradually, starting with a
very low level of stimulation (just above
perception) and increasing with care until you
reach a good level of stimulation, represented
by good muscle activation.
On the face, it is not necessary to reach levels
of intensity capable of causing discomfort!
Great and significant results are obtained
through consistency and patience.
Warning: Use the programme of your
choice on mode I and never bring the
intensity higher than 40 mA.
Always use small electrode pads (see E-CM25)
or the face electrode pads* (see E-CM3050).
*Sold separately.
A minimum distance of 3 cm. must be kept
between the electrode pad and the eyeball.
Note: You might notice mild skin
redness at the site of the electrode
pads after the treatment session. It
should fade within 10 to 20 minutes.
Very rarely temporary after-effects, such as
mild eyelid flutter, have been reported after
facial stimulation. This has always resolved
within a few days.
GENERAL ADVICE:
Ideally, use Sports TENS 2 once every two
days for each muscle with a day of rest in
between. It is possible to work on pairs of
muscles, for example thighs and abdominal
muscles, treating one set one day and the other
the next day.

Warning: Working on too many
muscles at the same time is not
recommended.
The object of EMS treatment is to produce
powerful muscle contractions.
The strength of the current should be increased
to about three times the level at which you
can first feel the tingling, or to as high as you
can stand without causing pain.
Increase the intensity until you feel a very
smooth tensing under the pads, there should be
little visible movement.
Use a low intensity for the first session to help
you to understand how the machine works.
Voluntary muscular activity is more effective
than stimulation, and it may improve progress if
you combine voluntary contraction with
stimulation. For best results, always try to
contract voluntarily during the work phases.
During the programme and over the next few
days the intensity should be increased
gradually to produce marked, but not painful
muscle contractions.
After treatment tingling sensations may
continue or your skin may feel numb, this is
normal.
Once good results have been obtained the
sessions may be reduced to once or twice a
week until the user feels that optimum body
shaping has been achieved.
Note: The stimulation should remain
comfortable and relaxing at all times.

7.2. PROGRAMME USAGE
Massage programmes can be used to relieve
stiffness in the muscles. Simply experiment with
the different programmes to find the one that
you find the most relaxing.
Programme 1 alternates between two strong
squeezing/kneading feelings.
Programme 2 alternates between slow and fast
tapping.
Programme 3 alternates between gentle and
strong kneading.
Programme 4 has five steps of gradually
increasing strength of kneading, alternating
with tapping.
Programme 5 and 7 alternates between slow
and medium-strong tapping.
Programme 6 is a gentler form of programme
5.
Programme 8 is a pumping sensation at about
your own heart rate, that slowly increases in
speed over the course of the 20 min treatment.
It is especially effective with swollen legs and
veins.
Programme 9 is squeezing/kneading in 6 steps
of increasing intensity.
Programme 10 generates a tapping sensation
gradually speeding up, then slowing down.
8. MANUAL PROGRAMMES
When a programme has manual settings
available, MANUAL will be displayed. The
manual programmes are the TENS
programmes 11 and 12 as well as the EMS
programmes 10 and 11.
In the manual programmes, you can select and
change the following parameters:

1. Select the mode TENS or EMS using the
MODE button, then select one of the
manual programmes pressing P.
2. Press the +MENU to start changing the
parameters.
3. In the TENS programmes, you can change
the parameters frequency, pulse width,
treatment timer, date, hour, MEM D and
MEM H.
In the EMS programmes, you can change
the parameters: frequency, pulse width,
work time, rest time, treatment timer, date,
hour, MEM D and MEM H.
4. To adjust the parameter flashing on the
screen, use the + and buttons.
5. To confirm your selection and go to the next
(or previous) parameter press +MENU or -
MENU.
6. Once the changes are complete, press the
return button to confirm. The flashing
will stop.
See section 7 for more information on the
choice of settings.

Manual Programme Lock
Once you are back on the main screen after
adjusting the parameters, you can protect the
manual settings by pressing and holding
button for 5 seconds.
The key symbol will start flashing on the
screen.
If you try to adjust the parameters, the key
symbol will flash.
Press and hold for 5 seconds to unlock
the settings of the programme.
Warning triangle
In the EMS manual programmes a Warning
triangle will be displayed if the Rest period
is less than Rest Time=Work Time*(WorkHz-
16.66)/16.66 seconds
Date and Time Setting
To set date and time, press +MENU and cycle
through parameters to DATE.
Centre left shows the day of month and centre
right shows the time.
When DATE appears and the number on the
left is flashing, adjust the day with the + and -
buttons and confirm with the return button .
When HOUR appears
and the number of the
right is flashing, adjust
the time with the + and -
buttons and confirm with
the return button .
9. ELECTRODE PADS
The electrode pads must always be used in
pairs (two electrode pads on each channel), so
that the signal can flow in a circuit.
You may feel more sensation in one pad than
the other. This is normal it depends on where
the electrode pads are in relation to your
nerves.
Use the square electrode pads (see E-CM5050)
for all areas except the face where specific
optional electrode pads are required (see E-
CM25 and E-CM3050).
Always check that the unit is OFF before
attaching or removing electrode pads.
9.1. TENS ELECTRODE
PLACEMENT
Around the area of pain
The easiest way is to apply the electrode pads
around/near the source of the pain.
TENS activates the nerves best if it travels
along the nerve rather than across it. So, place
one pad further from the spine than the source
of the pain, and one closer.
If the pain is in, or close to, your spine you can
place one pad either side of the spine.
Note: See examples of positioning in
the instructions enclosed with your
electrode pads.

9.2. EMS ELECTRODE
PLACEMENT
Electrode placement for EMS is very
important for obtaining the best results.
Place two electrode pads over the bulk of the
muscle, with one electrode over the muscle’s
motor point. The motor point is the area on the
skin that is located closest to the motor nerve’s
entry into the muscle about 1/3 of the way
down the muscle from the spine. Here, it is
easiest to trigger a contraction by electrical
stimulation.
Experiment by moving the electrode pads
across the skin until you locate the point over
the muscle that gives the cleanest contraction.
Note: The + electrode pad needs to
be plugged in to the red lead wire
connector, the refers to the one for
the black lead wire connector.
